While future guests of the White House will be having a ball in its forthcoming ballroom, for which demolition began on Monday, the massive renovation isn’t the first of its scale at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Since its debut in 1800, and reconstruction in 1817, the presidential residence has seen a number of major facelifts. President Trump’s, of course, is the most recent — and will cost a grand $250 million.

Truman had to gut it because of neglect during WWII and the depression. The picture is shocking!

When Obama was in office, I remember the back lawn was dug up and something was under construction for the whole summer, I think. I also remember the workers had to sign agreements to not talk about what they were doing. Then I never heard another word. What is under the back lawn? I also didn't know/remember the East Wing was built to cover the bunker. I thought they all were going to that underground city, don't remember the name, somewhere in one of the Carolinas for protection.

#1 - Yes, it is a disturbing photo. I earned my B.A. in History, U.S. emphasis, and first saw the Truman photos decades ago in college. I still find them disturbing. Nothing inside the White House is original. The floorboards trod by Lincoln, Garfield, and FDR (spit) are forever gone. The plaster walls that heard and witnessed events, both great and small, are forever gone.
I've always believed the truly needed upgrades in plumbing and wiring could have been accomplished without the wholesale destruction of the entire interior. It may have taken more time, and money, but the historic spaces would have been preserved.
I can't wait to see our new Trump Ballroom! It'll be great!
MAGA!

Jackie Kennedy did a whole renovation of all the public rooms. The press did a big tour on TV and the show won an Emmy. Lots of presidents made changes to the White House. In 1882, Louis Comfort Tiffany installed a beautiful stained glass screen which was removed by Theodore Roosevelt when he did a reconstruction. What President Trump is doing is nothing new at all.

There is little remaining of the original White House except perhaps the exterior. During all these renovations over the years, one thing hasn't changed and is only visible from the private quarters of the president while he stands on the balcony. There preserved on the outside of the exterior of the White House, are the burn marks left over from when the British set the house on fire.

#1 and #4: I disagree: from what I've read, the WH was in DIRE need of an interior rebuild. Young Margaret had a piano on the second floor, and she noticed it seemed to be tilting a bit. Turns out the floor underneath it was rotting away, and the piano may have fallen through to the first floor at any moment. A thorough inspection revealed the 140+ years of rot and decay, and the entire rebuild commenced.
Ol' Harry also knew that Thomas Jefferson had wanted a balcony installed on the second floor, but it had not happened. He made sure that was done. Some called it the Truman Balcony afterwards, but Ol' Harry was far too modest to claim that for himself.

The trouble with the left--- one of many troubles-- is that they are ignorant of history, two examples of which are White House construction and the meaning of fascism.

I wonder how many listening devices the CIA and J. Edgar Hoover had installed in the White House during Truman's rebuilding?
And how many Soviet ones they missed?

Interesting thread here, all y’all.
Hope many of you have had the opportunity to visit DC and the White House, and many of the other historic sites nearby. Living on the East Coast only an hour away from DC, in 8th grade History our class was able to enter only the first level kitchen and storage area of the White House, as construction was going on then too. Still quite a memory!
Loved the Library of Congress, and was blessed after college to have been a research assistant for a major Senate Judiciary Subcommittee for several years, then with Top Secret Clearance, helped prepare and oversee Senate hearings and follow through.
Would stop each morning at the Senate coffee shop for coffee, and see the same NY Senator each morning. We had eight senators on our committee and were able to use the auto pen if the Chairman of the Committee was not in town to sign the mostly ‘thank you letters.’
Heady times!
