The Gateway project to build two new badly needed tunnels for trains under the Hudson River is already running two years behind schedule — even though it just broke ground, a federal audit shows. Officials at the Gateway Development Commission have publicly stated that by 2038 they will have finished digging and constructing the new tunnels and then rehabilitate the two existing trans-Hudson tubes, which were badly damaged by Superstorm Sandy. However, the audit performed for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transit Administration shows the work will likely take until 2040.

It'll be done *someday*, at unknown (but unexpected™) cost. Certainly using union labor.

Idiots couldn't even build an outdoor skating rink,it took them years to do it and millions of dollars and they kept failing after repeated offers from Trump to build it they finally gave up and begrudgingly let Trump build it and Trump did a great job and under budget in a couple months

The BIG question is:
Who will these tunnels be named after?

Unions don't want to work. Never did, never will. Demonstrating the cognition of stegasorauses with walnut sized brains, they like giving members' dues money to the likes of 0'Biden in return for ... something, maybe. BTW, are e-vehicles going to be allowed in those tunnels? Locally, there are already new hotels and office buildings near beaches that are considering or have decided not to allow e-vehicles to park on their premises because of fire risk. Quite reasonable.

I recall watching a documentary on the underground projects in the City. Seems the ONLY way to get hired is to be family. Nepotism is rampant.
Imagine graduating from school, Uncle gets you on board, $100k plus job your entire working career....

Whaddaya expect?
It's a Government project.
Oversold and underbudgeted to begin with so as to get the thing approved, once the project is partly done and the government is committed, the REAL cost and schedule becomes apparent..... and that's when the actual project workers -from the engineers to the guys running the machinery- are doing everything right.
Introduce political corruption, union corruption, incompetency (and now add DEI!) and everything (money required and time required) goes off the chart.
On the Left coast, the 'Kali Supertrain' is a similar situation. Billions spent (I suspect mostly on lawyers) and I don't know what, if anything, has actually been built.

PS it took the city of New York 6 years and about 13million dollars to build a failed skating rink.
Trump did it for 750k and in 6months,two months ahead of schedule.

No one needs to actually GO TO NYC any more. Even if you work there, just telecommute.

You will never catch me traveling in a car or train in a Tunnel UNDER the Hudson (or any other) River. No way! Gives me the chills just thinking of it! Last time we went to Baltimore, Hubby had to drive out of the way to get us where we needed to go. No tunnels for me! Extremely Long Bridges are next for me! Hate them! I've lived mostly in the Midwest or Tennessee and Florida. So far, I haven't needed a Tunnel to get me where I needed to go!

to put that in context, it is $170,000 for each of the 100,000 illegal aliens Biden has shipped to NYC. Aliens that will either have to commute...or by getting housing in NYC will force others to have to commute. What is the anticipated daily ridership? How many could a set of ferries carry?
Union Carpenters start at $99hr in NYC, what do tunnelers make?
Elon musck invented and builds a tunneling machine...what would the cost be if HE was put in charge?

When the time comes to open them for business, union members, union bosses and city officials who approved this boondoggle will be long gone. You should always add three times the cost and double the time for these city projects.

I guess they didn't learn anything from Boston's big dig. Years late and way over budget. Plus, when I visited Boston, the driver of the vehicle I was in stated it leaks like sieve and then the water freezes on the road in the winter.

Spot on, #12!
Years ago we drove to Noo Yawk City for the Macy's parade, as we had a couple of kids marching in it.
Driving bumper-to-bumper through some long -seemingly never-ending- tunnel under the Hudson River just scared me half to death. What kind of ventilation system was being used? What if it failed while we were in the tunnel? What if there was a fender-bender and traffic stopped? Would enough people keep their engines running that we would all get carbon monoxide poisoning?
Not to mention an EV catching fire!
An EV fire in that tunnel is a 'Mass Casualty Events' just waiting to happen!

The final cost will be triple the estimates and it will take years longer.
Look for the union label.
