NEW DELHI — India on Wednesday landed a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole, an uncharted territory that scientists believe could hold vital reserves of frozen water and precious elements, as the country cements its growing prowess in space and technology.
A lander with a rover inside touched down on the lunar surface at 6:04 local time, sparking cheers and applause among the space scientists watching in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru. After a failed attempt nearly four years ago, India made history by becoming the first country to touch down near the little-explored south pole region and joins the United States, the Soviet Union and China
Well done India!

They are now one of only three countries that still exist. Russia has failed to replicate the Soviet Union's space program from 50 years ago.

So, India can do it, but not Russia. There are reports that Putin was very personally interested in the success of the Russian moon lander to showcase Russia's technical prowess.
Seems like what was showcased was something else.
Congratulations to India.

Congratulations to the Indian Instituties of Technology - academic institutions with competitive merit-based admissions. Admission is based on a stringent entrance examination. The IIT are considered some of the hardest schools in the world to get into. Their engineers and scientists are highly sought-after in the U.S. Tech industry.

So did the Russians time their attempt to beat the Indians? I seem to recall that they did that just before our first manned lunar landing.

Re #10, India is a country of extreme contrasts. I have ridden on First Class trains which are nicer than most airliners, more spacious, nicely air conditioned, carpeted, large comfortable seats. And I have, looking out the windows of Indian trains....many with no glass because there is no AC and the ventilation is necessary, and watched an old Indian farmer plowing a field with nothing but one white cloth wrapped around his head and another white cloth wrapped around his loins. He was urging on a pair of bullocks who were pulling a wooden plow.
Like in Russia, also a land of extreme contrasts.
I have been traveling down a rural road and watched three men with a horse drawn wagon tossing hay onto a hay pole to make a haystack, using wooden three tined hay forks. Three miles down the road a farmer was driving an air conditioned cab tractor pulling a round bale baler, which would spit out a round bale every 100 yards or so.
Travel lets you see that the world has many different places, and sometimes the 18th century runs along right beside the 21st century, in the same country.

You Go, India!
And please take #3's affectionate ribbing in the spirit it was intended. (If Russia had got there first, we'd have to be making Brighton Beach Russian Mafia jokes.)
#14, my favorite juxtaposition-in-time moment was driving by a group of nomads herding their animals along the Russian Road in Afghanistan, looking like a scene right out of the Bible, and realizing one of the men was talking on his cell phone.

Does this mean that calls from my "Cable company, phone company, credit card company or bank" from people with Indian accents named "Bobby" will now be originating from the moon instead of New Delhi?

Very true #15 ...I was just joking , as a matter of fact my dad packed up the whole family and left Appalachia in 1959 to start a new life and a steady job here in Florida. His steady job...managing a 7-11 , his hours 7-11 .

Wonderful news....success, finally!! I'm so happy for India! This particular attempt was delayed several years by the pandemic. Should yield LOTS of useful data!!

#8, the IITs do have a standard tough entrance exam. But a significant number of seats are reserved for lower or scheduled casts who can get in with a lower score. However they have to spend an extra prep year before they are admitted to a five year degree course.

Was this moon landing as fake as the rest? Edward Hendrie, author of “The Greatest Lie on Earth”, would likely say it was.

Putin's rockets can't land on the moon, but they can shoot down a bizjet with one of his "old buddies" in it.

That is pathetic #22. Comic books, Marvel movies and your ' proof ' aren't real. It is called entertainment.

Apparently NYBob has read the book mentioned along with comic books and Marvel movies. You used the word “proof”. I mentioned that it was an opinion. Actually has some interesting observations. Control yourself.
