Roughly 25 years ago, many of us were shocked by the discovery of a home full of bodies of dozens of people laying in bunk beds, wearing jumpsuits and identical black-and-white Nike Decade sneakers. They were the members of the Heaven’s Gate cult who, with their leader, drank a lethal mix of phenobarbital and vodka to gain entry to “Heaven’s Gate” with the passing Hale-Bopp comet.
Few of us could understand how rational people could believe their leader that it was necessary to shed their earthly bodies to gain access to an orbiting alien space craft. Few would buy such a pitch, but these people did.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appears, finally, to be ready to enter the presidential race.
DeSantis, who has long been seen as the most serious rival to former President Trump for the GOP nomination, has been running a quasi-campaign for months, backed up by a big-spending super PAC.But now multiple media reports suggest the Florida governor will enter the race next week.
He is expected to file paperwork making a bid official around Wednesday or Thursday — the days when he has scheduled a gathering of campaign donors in Miami.
Here are the major questions facing DeSantis as he moves toward that declaration.

Iraq has just banned US-dollar transactions, the Saudis and Emiratis plan to sell oil without it and there are plans to establish a whole new currency to bypass it. To know why, first have a look at the war in Ukraine. Anyone in Iraq who wanted to buy a car or a house this week got a nasty shock. Last Sunday, the Iraqi government announced a ban on doing personal or business deals in US dollars.
Ordinary Iraqis usually make big-ticket purchases using dollars. Because of the ongoing devaluation of their own dinar, they'd need several large rubbish bags filled with paper dinar notes to buy a car or house.

As an attorney and retired NYPD Inspector, I’ve been told some stories in my day. This one lands someplace between "Beowulf"and Monty Python. So let us now uncover these mysteries, hidden deep in the tale.
As we’ve all heard by now, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (wasn’t he recently banished from the realm or something?) are claiming that on Tuesday night, after leaving an event in Manhattan’s midtown, they were pursued by paparazzi in a "near catastrophic" car chase that went on for two hours.

Democrats are squawking because their bluff has been called on illegal immigration. Lori Lightfoot, ousted mayor of Chicago, and Eric Adams, mayor of New York City, wrote recently to Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) to complain about his busing of aliens to their doorsteps from the Mexican border.
“We simply have not more shelters, spaces, or resources,” bleated Lightfoot, adding that it was an attempt to “cause chaos and score political points.” That is true and is well done for being so. Democrats, with their virtue signaling on illegal immigration, led by President Joe Biden making a dog’s breakfast of border security, are causing chaos and trying to score political points

Who is going to trust the Department of Justice now? In the wake of Special Counsel John Durham’s long-awaited report, Americans now know there was widespread political collusion and deliberate deception from the very top of the Obama administration, the Clinton campaign, the corporate media and the Department of Justice (DOJ), all in favor of the Democrats. Not only did they abuse their power and lie to the public, they seem to be proud of it.
With these facts now added to the long list of formerly crazy conspiracy theories come true, former president Donald Trump is essentially inoculated from any future prosecution by virtue of the public mistrust

There are powerful parallels in the 1961 movie "The Hustler," the 1913 U.S. Open, and the current debt ceiling negotiation. Let me explain.
In each case, there is a real question of which competitor is going to succumb to the pressure and break. In "The Hustler," Paul Newman plays Eddie Felton, a young pool shark who takes on the greatest pool player of his time, Minnesota Fats (played brilliantly by Jackie Gleason). A great deal of money is involved, with the champion being backed by several big money guys. They are equally good pool players, but Gleason’s character is confident, and Newman’s character is insecure.

The most recent liberal ABC News/Washington Post poll showed President Joe Biden's approval rating at 36 percent - the lowest in history for a president at this point in his first term.
Biden's low popularity is no mystery.
He inherited energy independence, affordable gas prices, historically low interest rates, low inflation, calm overseas, a low crime rate, and a largely closed border with legal-only immigration.
And then Biden destroyed that inheritance.
He has begged illiberal foreign governments to pump oil he refuses to drill domestically for.
He spiked inflation at the highest rate in over 40 years. Home interest rates have skyrocketed from less than 3% to 7%.
He nearly doubled the price of gasoline.

Despite being described as "catastrophic," Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's alleged car chase in New York City is not sounding the alarm at Buckingham Palace. Although he offered thoughts and prayers this morning, King Charles' was not referring to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
"My wife and I are most profoundly shocked and saddened to see the scale of suffering and devastation caused by Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar and Bangladesh," the newly crowned King wrote to his Instagram.

Nearly every House Democrat has endorsed an effort to make an end run around House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and bring a clean debt ceiling increase forward for a vote that doesn't include spending cuts for the federal government.
At the direction of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., Democrats began collecting signatures for a discharge petition on Wednesday morning. Discharge petitions can force a vote on legislation even if the majority party objects, but a majority of House lawmakers needs to sign it.
As of Thursday afternoon, 210 House Democrats had signed the discharge petition in the hopes of forcing a vote on a debt ceiling increase.

POTENTIAL TROUBLE AHEAD FOR JOE BIDEN
1. On the fiscal talks, he needs a little more market scare (as a forcing mechanism) and a little less 14th Amendment and discharge petition talk (which are the opposite of forcing mechanisms…), or he might indeed preside over a stumble into a default.
2. If the rate at which he has begun to look older in recent months continues, the optics of his reelection are going to be tougher.
3. A New Hampshire primary problem with no obvious solution.
4. China, China, China.
5. Any of five threads which might be pulled by the prosecutors or the press on the Hunter sweater. 6. The possible inability

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., is introducing articles of impeachment against President Biden. "It is with the highest amount of solemnity that I announce my intention to introduce articles of impeachment today on the head of this America-at-last Executive Branch that has been working since January 20th, 2021, to systematically destroy this country: the President of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden," Greene said at a press conference Thursday.
The firebrand congresswoman said Biden should be removed from office because he has failed to secure the border and has "deliberately compromised our national security by refusing to enforce immigration laws and secure our border."
