CNN will see layoffs and other cuts in the coming weeks, as the global news division responds to a worsening economic climate and as Warner Bros. Discovery continues its effort to bring together the WarnerMedia and Discovery businesses.
CNN CEO Chris Licht explained the rationale in a memo to staff Wednesday, adding that “our aim is to have most of these decisions made by the end of the year so we can start 2023 feeling settled and prepared for the future.” Employees at CNN have been bracing for the changes since Licht began a review of the news division’s business lines and its programming. On the programming front,

With just a few more days left to complete his acquisition of Twitter
and stave off a new court date, billionaire Elon Musk walked into the company’s San Francisco office on Wednesday with what appeared to be a porcelain bathroom sink in his hands.
“Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!” the Tesla
and SpaceX CEO tweeted with a video of his entrance. A person at the company confirmed to CNBC that Elon was visiting today, and noted that there is some internal concern about what will happen to people on foreign-worker visas. This person, who declined to be named discussing internal matters, said that employees are trying

Democrats are adding millions in television spending to boost Sen. Patty Murray, a sign that the party is employing a take-no-chances approach even in solidly blue Washington state.
The 30-year veteran of the Senate is facing a challenge from Republican Tiffany Smiley, a political newcomer whose campaign has seized on quality-of-life issues, from urban crime and homelessness to inflation, to tarnish Murray. In recent public polling, Smiley has closed a sizable gap since this summer, when Murray led by 18 percentage points in an 18-candidate, all-party primary.
A Seattle Times poll released last week showed Murray slipping slightly, from 51 percent in a July survey to 49 percent now

Police in South Florida have made a second arrest in connection with a vicious weekend attack on a GOP campaign worker who told authorities he was attacked “because he was a Republican,” according to an arrest report.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio first tweeted about the attack on Monday. He has highlighted the case as an example of anti-Republican media bias, because local and national media have cast doubt on the accusation that the attack was politically motivated. Rubio believes the latest police report clearly backs his assertion that his canvasser was attacked over his Republican politics.

A protester has been arrested after Just Stop Oil supporters threw orange paint over the headquarters of a climate sceptic think tank in central London.
Climate activists from the campaign group attacked a building in Westminster used by the Global Warming Policy Foundation and disrupted traffic by sitting in the road.
Some supporters also glued themselves to the road, and others locked themselves together. Just Stop Oil has been demanding the government halts new oil and gas licences and consents. It has been labelled a nuisance by many, and has closed the Dartford Crossing, smeared chocolate cake over a waxwork of King Charles, and thrown various things

When the draft opinion of the ruling by the Supreme Court in the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health case leaked before the Court’s official ruling was handed down, an already volatile political atmosphere grew even more so. Justice Samuel Alito, the author of the leaked draft opinion, said at an event with the Heritage Foundation that the leak endangered conservative justices and made them “targets for assassination.”
“The leak also made those of us who were thought to be in the majority in support of overruling Roe and Casey targets for assassination because it gave people a rational reason to think they could prevent

Deliver this one straight into my veins, NY Times:
Republicans are pressing their advantage deep into Democratic territory in the closing stretch of the 2022 campaign, competing for an abundance of House seats amid growing signs that voters are poised to punish President Biden’s party even in the bluest parts of America.
Republicans need to win only a handful of seats to take over the House of Representatives, which Democrats now control by a narrow margin of 220-212. But with two weeks until the election, Republicans are looking to run up the score

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) was a man on a mission during his debate on Tuesday against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The big focus of their race has been crime, the top issue in New York. Zeldin has focused on it like a laser beam, and he’s closed the gap that he originally had with Hochul. As we noted, the latest poll had Zeldin leading by under a point. That probably means that Zeldin is up by even more. But listen in the clips below, as Zeldin just decimates Hochul on crime. Hochul shows how limited the position of Democrats is on this point — all they can talk

On Monday, John Fetterman’s campaign desperately sought to lower expectations for their candidate when he faced off against Republican nominee Dr. Mehmet Oz—even going so far as to suggest that they expected Fetterman to lose.
I can assure you they didn’t lower expectations nearly enough.
I watched the entire debate, and I have to admit that I sometimes felt bad for Fetterman. I’m sure he expected to have bounced back from the stroke quicker and stronger than he has, but Tuesday night’s debate performance merely demonstrated just how far he has to go in his recovery. Without a doubt

Harrisburg, Pa. — John Fetterman, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, said during a debate against Republican Mehmet Oz on Tuesday that he would support allocating federal funds to transport women across states lines to have abortions.
“I would because I believe abortion rights is a universal right for all women in America,” Fetterman said when asked if he would support such an allocation of federal funds. “I believe that abortion is health care and I believe that that is a choice that belongs with each woman and their doctor.”
“I want to look into the face of every woman

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s 37-year-old ruler, has reportedly mocked President Biden in private while questioning his mental state, a move that could fracture U.S.-Saudi relations at a time when the partnership is being tested following a move by OPEC+ to cut oil production and harsh criticism of the regime by American lawmakers.
The Wall Street Journal reported that several people inside the Saudi government said the prince preferred former President Trump and has seemed unimpressed with Biden since his days as vice president while also making fun of his gaffes.

Democratic consultant and political commentator James Carville said Monday on MSNBC’s “The Beat” that the Democratic party needs to stop listening to “elite coastal people” who push identity politics.
Thursday on MSNBC, former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean said, “I’ll make this prediction right now. We’ll pick up two to three in the Senate and pick up the House. We will pick up seats in the House and not lose them.” Carville said, “I agree with you if we execute an obvious strategy that is right in front of us. But if we keep this kind of NPR foundation strategy of identity left politics, we’re going to lose.
