left millions who use 'smart' technology

Amazon's cloud outage saw Alexa's, Roomba robot vacuum cleaners and Ring doorbells go down - leaving some users trapped outside their own 'smart' homes. Some Ring customers said that they spent time rebooting or reinstalling their apps and devices before finding out about the outage on social media. Many rely on a phone app to enter their homes, rather than a code that can also be used, with those that had forgotten the latter stuck outside their own homes as Ring doorbells went down.

Smart houses are really dumb.
I can't even imagine leaving my whole life dependent on the internet to be able to function. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I make sure that NOTHING of mine is on the internet that doesn't need to be on.

I don't use the "cloud" for anything. One reason is that I don't trust it to keep my data safe. Another is that our government under present leadership is likely to spy on it's citizens for political reasons.

I have successfully resisted the temptation to upgrade to one of those Ring doorbells. Half my neighborhood has them - used by the same people that have Alexa listening to everything that goes on in their houses.... No thanks. If I want to know who’s outside ringing the doorbell, I’ll just look out the window.

#6: "hand over their daily life to Amazon?" And the Chinese, our government, the FBI....Who knows. I understand that local police departments are encouraging people to all allow cop monitoring using Ring doorbell cameras.

Seems to me that this ownership of smart houses is just another way for Big Brother to take a peek into private spaces. May this failure of high tech wake a lot of people up.

Meanwhile, I opened the door to my house with a key, turned the lights on with a light switch, and opened the door to the fridge to get a drink without any problems. I even used the vacuum by plugging it in. All without any of the so-called smart tech. Seems the old-fashioned way is a lot smarter.

I love my Roomba, but she is not connected to Alexa. I'm still weening from Amazon, but I kicked Alexa out of my home years ago. She was always inserting herself in conversations that didn't involve her, and when I asked her a question, she either didn't understand the question or didn't know the answer. Not only was Alexa intrusive, she was also dumb. Good riddance.

Oh, what about your electrical service that the utility can disconnect from hq? We had no choice and they just came into the backyard and switched out the meter. The gov't has the ability to make us all freeze in the dark.

So many good points and positions above. I repeat, WHY? I'll be happy when a plague strikes these asinine "smart" phones. They are a pox on society.

I was watching America's Voice feed on my Roku when this hit. Fortunately the Rumble feed worked .. must be using another server for that.
I never trust anything critical to the "cloud" .. AKA someone else's server. No matter how "secure" they claim to be, hacks and other things can happen. An external HDD kept in my safe deposit box is where I trust my critical data.

.. And even safe deposit boxes have their limitations. There is no real defense when government goes after your physical assets .. wherever you keep them.

I have a smart home, I have a whole smart farm. I know exactly where the horses are, if the chicks are warm, if my girl’s light’s are on past bedtime. Hundreds of devices I can control from the electric fence to letting the dogs out. I trust it… but only because I wrote every line of code on every device. Big Tech&Chi-Coms are the last people in the world I’d trust. I’ll use them when it’s convenient, but never rely on them and definitely never trust them.

Oh please I don’t buy this..,uninstall the app & use a key, the fridge app only tells you when you need to change the filter.. I suggest the writer do some research..

I think about everyone of these Amazonians wear their Bidenmasks indoors and outdoors everywhere. They can’t trust a brass key and door knob, but they can sure trust Big Tech and Big Medicine.
