New York Magazine writer and founder of the “1619 Project” Nikole Hannah-Jones took to Twitter this week to offer her historically illiterate take on why the United States bombed Hiroshima during World War II.In a now-deleted Nov. 6 tweet, Jones attempted to argue that the only reason the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city was due to financial reasons.“They dropped the bomb when they knew surrender was coming because they’d spent all this money developing it and to prove it was worth it,” she wrote. “Propaganda is not history my friend.” (Tweet)

Those with intelligence and self-awareness use their imagination to create great works of fiction; those with mediocre minds mired in self-delusion and wokeness create inane works of fiction and call it the truth.

I'd be more inclined to believe the assertion that Truman dropped the bombs to get the diplomatic upper hand against Stalin after the war. But I still accept the simpler traditional history, that the bombs were dropped to push the Emperor into surrendering and avoid a huge loss of Americans in an invasion of Japan.

Beyond ignorant into just stupid. Ignorance can be fixed, stupid is forever.
The estimates were that 1 million Americans would be killed in an attack on mainland Japan, and that we would kill at least 10 million Japanese, including huge numbers of civilians who were being trained to attack in human waves with home made spears, or grenades.
The atomic bombs saved many millions of lives.....most of them Japanese.
Only the ignorant and the stupid don't grasp this.

I think we should hold off our opinions - - until we hear from the Koreans, Chinese, Filipinos, Burmese, and Malaysians who were invaded by Japan.
No, scratch that - - we can't wait - - they were all beaten, raped, tortured, enslaved, and murdered. Too bad - - it would have been nice to hear what they had to say.

I lived and worked in Tokyo for 6 years. I understand and remain immersed in the culture and also speak the language. I was stopped often in my daily activities by complete Japanese strangers, mostly older, who wanted to THANK me personally as an American for "ending" the war by bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I was initially very puzzled. They told me that if we had not bombed, the Japanese would've continued fighting--- resulting in millions of civilian casualties. The Japanese have a different attitude about honor and duty than we do and would rather have died (fighting hand-to-hand combat with home made bamboo spears) than surrender.

My understanding was the Truman gave the go-ahead on the bombs to head off MacArthur's disasterous plan of physically invading Japan. All indications were that Japan was vompletely aware of MacArthur's plans and were busy preparing for them. Estimates of casualties for the operation were over 1 million American and 10 milion Japanese civilian dead and wounded.
When the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, they had a slightly better than 50% chance it would even go off. But there was a military build up there, so...
This goes right along with another article i read claiming Joe Stalin beat Japan, not the U.S.

Jones believes that the bombs were used because they were a science experiment. She's not aware that the bomb was tested at Alamogordo , New Mexico , July 1945, before it was used in Japan. Dumber than dumb woman.

We were already killing hundreds of thousands with the conventional fire bomb raids, even with these numbers they were not going to surrender, it took the shock of single bomb to get Hirohito, at great risk to himself, to stop the militarists that controlled the country. Sort of like if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out.

The scary thing about this woman is she isn't trying to be this dumb. It seems to come naturally to her. The Japanese of that era still worshipped their Emperor, and he would have told all of the citizens to fight to their last breaths. That would have cost millions of lives on both sides. They knew they had to break that power of the Emperor, so they had to use the bombs to force surrender. This is thumbnail at best on my part, but there was no imminent surrender coming by the Japanese. Not a drop of it.

I am currently reading a multiple interview with President Truman. You may not know that Mr Truman made his decisions only after more thought than most of us give anything. He approved the two bombings only when it became clear that an invasion of Japan would cost more Japanese and American lives than the bombs.

Often I read all the posts before reading g an article. Sometimes I don’t even read the article because I learn so much from posters. For example , a quickie search of unit 731 taught me something I’d never known before.

My dad's unit was being staged for invasion when the bomb fell on Hiroshima. I was born in '42 so I would have been OK if he had gotten killed but my three younger brothers wouldn't be here.
RIP, Harry.
