Cornell University is defending a new rock-climbing class offered to minority groups.Among the Ivy League school’s Outdoor Education offerings for the spring 2021 semester was a course called “BIPOC Rock Climbing”. The course description, according to The Cornell Daily Sun, specified that the class was “for people who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, or other people of color.”That prompted an uproar from across the internet. The university was accused of violating federal and state civil rights law while one Reddit user decried what they described as a “horrifically and monstrously racist practice

Feeling especially guilty about something, Outdoor Rec? Very simple to me that Departments in these colleges need defunding. I stopped funding one Jesuit Institution and threatened to do the same to another. Gave specifically to that second institution’s Yellow Ribbon program for ROTC. The heck with general gifts. College is a business if they don’t produce good product then they shouldn’t thrive.

The Intellegensia Left is marching back to the 50's and 60's, segregating by races and colors. What's next? separate drinking fountains? restrooms? restaurant tabletops? It's Back to the Future in real time. They should be proud of themselves.

Who in the world came up with that stupid acronym BIPOC? And don't even get me started on Latinx. My parish has a lot of hispanic members and they all think it's silly.

Are the classes really necessary? Many of them have already proven very adept at climbing over fences and through windows to burgle properties.

Aside from all that, why is rock climbing a college class?

For those surprised that rock climbing is "a class," most schools offer physical education classes for minimal credit, some even require it. Rec centers often offer non-credit classes for free.

Outdoor education? Guess I wasted my time in Spherical Calculus and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry....climbing rocks for credit. There’s a scam if ever there was one.

What if you're only half black? I guess you get to climb halfway up the wall but are not allowed to the top.

Some students need, shall we say, less difficult classes to be awarded enough credits to graduate. I once knew a guy who took bowling and modern dance. We called him Wonderful Wayne.

What the left has turned this country into is sickening and appalling. There is no changing these bigots, they are to far gone.

Let's just stop the delusional charade with the "identifies as" crap. How about "for people who ARE (whatever)" .... Bathrooms should be for people who ARE male, people who ARE female, and people who ARE in need of a special accommodation. Etc.

This is like a Subaru ad with the black family camping in the outdoors. Rock climbing 'black persons' I don't believe. I would believe and instructive course of 'rock, bottle and tear gas canister throwing with high jumping fences surrounding neighborhood properties and second story window breeching for burglarizing a home. Rock climbing is an insult thought up by a dumb 'white guilt' person.

Systemic racism.
Simple test.....replace black or whatever racist acronym they are using with "white" and see what would happen.
Racist on the face of it.

FTA: “it’s difficult to be a minority and feel welcomed in the outdoors,” citing issues including “cost of entry and accessibility [and] smaller microaggressions like the names of some outdoor climbing routes.”
I'm not sure which is more disturbing, the fact people at universities really speak this way or the fact someone might be put off from an activity due to the name of a climbing route.

It's easy to defend racism -- when you are a racist!!!! It all makes perfect sense to you -- when you are a racist!!!!
KKK members do it all the time. So apparently does the staff at Cornell!!!

As to blacks in the outdoors.....gee, almost 50 years of backpacking and I have NEVER seen a black person more than 1/4 mile from a car. Very, very few seen in the national parks in that same half a century of MANY visits. Those very few, were all in cars or very near them. Lots of Chinese and Japanese in the last 10 years, for sure, but essentially zero black people.
I have no idea why this is, but they seem to love the middle of cities and not the wide open spaces. Personal choices.

An inclusive all race Rock Climbing Class where all students worked together would go a lot further to make the students feel more included in the overall community than congregating with only other aggrieved minorities. These students need to learn that they determine their own self worth and do not need others like themselves to make them feel better. If they continue to congregate with only themselves in a BIPOC pity party Rock Climbing Class they will only learn to continue their own self-pity and feelings of oppression.
