I have a question. When did politicians and federal employees start calling themselves “public servants”? Even more importantly, why are we letting them? It’s almost as if they’re trying to claim the mantle of nobility for making a sacrifice in the public interest. But I don’t understand what that sacrifice is. They’re paid better and have better benefits than most private-sector employees. They’re rarely held accountable for their performance. Why do we treat them as if they’re serving a higher calling than any other profession in the country?Take Joe Biden, for example. He claims to have been in public service

The question is not when they started calling themselves "public servants" - that's from the origins of the nation. It's, " when did they stop believing it?"
That's almost from the beginning, too. Certainly since they started to demand pay for their "expertise".

To me hearing the term "public servant" is like hearing someone scratch a chalkboard.

In Louisiana, one of our two U.S. Senate "public servants," the late Bill Cassidy, is about to learn what happens when you betray the people. He voted to continue the "trial" against Pres. Trump. Mary Landrieu was DEFEATED by Cassidy when she voted for Obamacare. Cassidy was just re-elected to his 2nd term. It didn't take him long to get isolated and insulated...the Wash. way. Well, the Cajun people and the rest of us have looooooooong memories.

When were IRS and other federal employees allowed to unionize? The 60s? They pay tax payer funded union dues; the dues go to fat cats and democrat politicians; and democrat politicians pass legislation to protect their constituency - the tax payer funded unions. Pretty slick operation actually.

I am not aware of any authoritarian or totalitarian regime that did NOT portray itself as "champions of the people" or "public servants". This tendency to trumpet just how devoted they are to the "public good" or "national will" or "common man" becomes more and more pronounced as they become ever more estranged from the actual citizenry and impose more and more draconian and arbitrary diktats on those they "serve".

Perhaps the best synapsis I have ever heard in this regard was Dan Bongino's episode 1445.
Our government has been completely transformed into an apparatus that serves the ruling elites. A huge part of this when we fell for the rebranding of laws as "regulations" thus circumventing the three branches of government.
We lost our government to a word game, that's how easily we gave up.

Whenever a government worker is referred to as a "public servant", I translate it in my mind to "public employee". I will now use the phrase "public parasite", it's far more accurate.

I've always thought a pay scale like the military should be in place. Let's see how someone likes being paid a privates wages to run and win office. No work no promotion. AOC wouldn't have what she is receiving and retirement based on pay grade you would see more 'lawyers' going back to private practice if they made less. Make them carry their own insurance and pay for it themselves. If they want to be 'public servants' then make them servants to the public. When you don't vote and are not present you lose your pay be present as a servant should be. That would fix a lot that plagues us.

I wouldn't say they are all parasites. You sailboat capsizes and who do you call for rescue? A passenger crashes and who do you want doing the investigation into the cause? The airplane's company or NTSB? But this all reminds us that we need to fight back with the use of words, terms, etc. Illegal Aliens and not illegal immigrants or undocumented immigrants, etc.

I have always had a problem with the elite politicians referring to themselves as being in public service. They are not public servants. They only serve themselves and their best interests and are highly compensated for it.

If normal people could vote for their own income and benefits we would all be "servants" or whatever else we wanted to call ourselves - for life.

They are not public servants but "feather merchants", a term applied to civil service employees decades ago by someone who understood the nature of civil service. It's a game played amongst civil servants nee feather merchants wherein they spend a great amount of their time trying to feather their own nests. They follow the rule that if one doesn't have much to do to fill their days at work then invent forms to be filled out, imaginary problems to be investigated, and cry they need help which in turn means they qualify for a higher pay grade for supervising newly hired lower grade feather merchants who begin thinking about how they can feather their own nests. Thus, the vicious cycle perpetuates itself. The result is a highly compensated work force dedicated to feathering its nests.

I don't thank them for their service. They have made it so we cannot fire them, and they set their own salaries and benefits. We are their slaves.

Let's back up a second...when did these public employees start getting hired in large numbers at all government levels? We just had a Space Force established...with all the attendant bureaucracy, both military and civilian. It's so sacred one can't make a joke about it.
The fact is that government has been a sponge soaking up excess labor in the workforce. It did it with the draft, and does it with expanding programs and agencies. Employment is politically popular. Do we need 1.3 million active military, supplemented with 800,000 reservists, supplemented by 744,005 appropriated fund civilians, stationed in 150 countries with multiple command headquarters covering every bit of the globe? Of course we do, and we're under strength! And one wonders why the neverending wars and "interventions". Why are US forces in Europe? Are the Euros incapable of self-defense? Central Asia and the Middle East? Japan?
Your assignment today is to pretend you're an elected official and tell your government employee neighbor that (s)he's non-essential and job is abolished, that that government office is to be shrunken using computers, and the office closed. Oh, and their pensions reduced or eliminated...
Let us know how that works...

#11 beat me to it. These so-called "public servants" service the public in much the same way a stud horse services a brood mare.

They are parasites, and have been increasing drastically. It’s like round robin with leaks, information, and pay offs of our tax dollars. Enter politics with nothing, do nothing, yet become a millionaire.
