The author of the books which inspired new Netflix drama Bridgerton has backed the decision to cast King George III's wife as black. Queen Charlotte is played by British actress Golda Rosheuvel, 49, in the new period drama, which has been tipped as a rival to the enormously popular Downton Abbey. American author Julia Quinn, whose book series of the same name inspired the show, has backed the 'colour-conscious' casting, saying that 'many historians' believe Queen Charlotte had 'some African background'. The theory that Charlotte—who was born into an aristocratic German family—had African ancestry is partly based on how she looks in some portraits.

I'm not surprised. What does fact have to do with anything? Almost every couple you see on TV or in the movies is mixed race despite what you find in reality. Rival to Downton Abbey? I beg to differ.

Like every other theatrical production, I'm not planning on seeing it, so, contrary to history, they can continue to believe only Africans did any thing of note, throughout history. Thinking people, not liberals, know better.

Blacks think all of Africa is populated by blacks.
Not true.
Most of north Africa was populated by Greeks, Romans, and Middle easterners.
Like other fake history, blacks once touted the idea that Cleopatra was black.
Not a bit of it.
Same with this German lady.
The royals of Europe would have benefitted by a bit of imported dna.
She was as inbred as all of the rest of them.

But wouldn't it be funny if true, as it would take away one of Megyn Markle's claims to fame.

I am fascinated by British history, but I'll give this a pass. I can suspend my disbelief fairly well, but not in this case. Queen Charlotte was not black. Alexandre Dumas, the great French writer was of mixed race. I don't think I'd like him played by a lily white actor like Timothee Chalamet.

Right. Let’s base “African ancestry” on how a person looks in a portrait. Not even a photograph, but a subjective rendering. I just looked at a whole raft of paintings of Charlotte at various mature ages and can find nothing that would lead to that determination. She has dark brown eyes. So? In one painting, the artist uses unusual colors and gives her a nose that doesn’t look like her nose in any other portraits. But she never ever looks black.
Is this really, really important to black people?

Will not watch. Don't care what color she was. I watched the first series of Downton Abby and stopped after that. It was boring so I don't plan on watching another boring TV show about the difference in the classes in England. I don't see why Americans are so hung up on British royalty. The Queen is a figurehead and she did good things for England during the war but raised a dysfunctional family.

PS. She didn’t look a bit like that tough-looking rather mannish actress playing her on Netflix.
The greenish painting in the article makes her look very different from all the other paintings of her. No surprise they latched on to that.
Here’s another of her. I’m not seeing black. And she is much more refined-looking than that coarse-looking actress in the weird wig.

Ho hum, another bit of fiction to not watch. Put all black actors in all movie and TV creations for all I care. The only thing it will accomplish now is to shrink audiences and put actors of all other races, creeds, religions and ancestry out of work. Concentrated attempts to "woke" and educate people are serving to create the opposite outcome.

She was German, and as white as the rest of that population of that time. There was no way that the British monarchy of that era would have welcomed a black queen. Not when slavery was still the thing. They check family trees VERY carefully when vetting for royal brides is being done. Take the late Diana for example. With her lineage, she actually had more claim to the throne than the current queen does, but her ties to those ancestors are 'wrong side of the blanket' kinds of ties. That is how carefully they vet.
Just more of their stupid identity politics, taking the place of facts and reality. If appearance is all that is needed to prove color, then Rachel and Shaun should not be denied their 'blackness' right?

Netflix can make lies, but it can't change history. The left has gotten silly in their attempts to do so. I laugh at them!

Oh good grief. The portraits are artist’s interpretations of what they actually looked like—they all had different styles, techniques, lighting, shading, etc. And, in the one they think shows her looking biracial she appears to be quite young. I look different now than when I was 13 as my nose changed, etc. and I “grew into” my face. Faces do mature and change a bit. And anyway, if she did have African blood, good for her. I think it’s interesting, so what? I found a lot of fascinating tidbits in my DNA testing (I was adopted) and I embrace it all. We really need to get over the “color” issue. As for the casting issue, whatever. Suspend your disbelief...it’s make believe after all.

When you have accomplished nothing you steal from those who have.
The Glory of Greece.
The Grandeur of Rome.
All of them were obviously black(lower case).

Rival to Downton Abbey? The best laugh of the day. George III was crazy as an outhouse rat but not that crazy.

Under our skins we are all Africans. Anatomically and behaviorally modern homo sapiens originated there between 50,000 and 100,000 years ago..

British idiots are so afraid of not being "woke enough" that they continue to inject blacks into their non-sense dramas more each passing year. Sooner or later the wokesters willl be claiming Henry VIII was actually a negro, but his artists were paid to make him white.
In contrast, the British were most adept at expelling non-white races and non-Anglican religions from their island kingdom for centuries. Irish Catholics, and also Africans had no place there and were routinely shipped to the colonies as slaves. The Royals profited handsomely from the slave trade and their exclusively owned new world colonial plantations. Of course they've never apologized for their profits derived from slavery and plantation ownership.
