New St. Paul restaurant changes
name after pushback about
'cultural exploitation'

A Mexican-inspired cantina called Elotes was slated to open Thursday as the new anchor restaurant inside St. Paul's Keg and Case Market. Instead, it opened Friday—with a different name: Woodfired Cantina. The restaurant, which is taking over the former In Bloom and its 20-foot wood-burning hearth, delayed its opening because of a problem with the fire-suppression system. The same day, it dropped the name Elotes—nodding to the Mexican grilled-corn dish—after criticism from some members of the Mexican community.(Snip) On what should have been its first night of service, about 50 protesters gathered outside

Comments:

Cultural exploitation, my foot; they're throwing their weight around and getting away with it. Do "minorities" even exist under the Marxist definition when they freely and openly bully others into submission over something so trivial as the name of a restaurant?

I'll bet those "members of the Mexican community" were speaking English, driving Japanese or German cars, using smartphones invented in the US and made in China, and wearing jeans again invented in the US and made in Vietnam.

And McDonald's exploits Scottish clowns - must be renamed Ray's Burger Barn. Provided that doesn't rile up rural farmers. And can we check to make sure immigrants are not appropriating ANYTHING in this country, either. I mean, let's be equitable in our irrational pettiness.

Fried corn is sacred. I didn't know that. Isa isn't Mexican so that person should change their name.

There will always be someone who will find a way to be offended. They changed there name because of 255 people? It was easier to change the name than put up with Isa’s BS. They didn’t need the aggravation.

The Jets and Bills opted out of taking a stand–or a knee–during the national anthem, choosing to stay inside. But the NFL’s reigning MVP had no such qualms. From Colin Kaepernick on, the NFL has been among the leagues most resistant to social media messaging. That’s why it was so noteworthy to see the MVP–Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson–taking a knee during the national anthem of Sunday’s season opener against Cleveland.(Snip) And while some Baltimore teammates knelt while others sat on the bench during the anthem, Ravens ownership backed their star player. “We respect and support our players’ right to protest peacefully.

An analysis conducted by The Associated Press and Chalkbeat shows that districts where the vast majority of students are white are more than three times as likely to be open for some in-person learning compared to school districts that enroll mostly students of color. While that stark divide often reflects the preferences of parents, it’s one that could further exacerbate inequities in education. Responses from 677 school districts surveyed by the AP and Chalkbeat found that most students will begin the school year online. But the survey shows that race is a strong predictor of which public schools are offering in-person instruction

The NFL has disclosed their list of approved names that they will allow players to wear on their helmet bumpers for social justice messaging. Among the names are Jacob Blake, who is accused of sexual assault. The list is apparently fluid, in the sense that new names are being added all the time. Also among the names is that of slain retired St. Louis police officer David Dorn. Dorn was killed in early June by rioters while checking on a friend’s store in St. Louis. The listing of Blake’s name, given his alleged violent history of sexual assault, stands in stark contrast

Deadline noted that the key 18-49 demographic pulled in a 5.2 rating, falling from last year’s 12.8 mark. William Shakespeare famously observed that “all the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” One of these players, Joe Biden, is currently trying out for the biggest role of his life. Unfortunately, he’s in danger of bombing the audition. He’s flubbing lines, breaking character, and occasionally forgetting the plot. His rambling, often incoherent speech in front of a supportive audience at a church in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on September 3 shows that he’s no longer playing the role of viable presidential candidate. Instead, he’s stumbled into the last scene of Shakespeare’s “strange, eventful history” — “second childishness and mere oblivion.”

So stark is the contrast between Donald Trump and Joe Biden that we feel compelled to announce our endorsement of the Democratic nominee and his running mate, Sen. I woke up in the morning wondering about the dark red rays coming from behind the curtain. While I expected the darkened sky, the degree of darkness and the fact that I couldn’t smell fire surprised me. Northern California fires have become increasingly common over the last decade as a consequence of mismanaging the environment. Native Americans staged controlled burns to safeguard their villages and create favorable hunting conditions. We failed to emulate that practice, and, as even Mother Jones concedes, so much fuel accumulated in the wilderness that megafires began burning year after year.
