The Republican convention yesterday evening featured a speech by Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director who today is a pro-life activist.
The substance of Johnson’s speech has received markedly little coverage, as most reports instead attacked the credibility of her conversion story or dredged up her controversial comments on other subjects. But what Johnson said about abortion is worth remembering.
“For most people who are pro-life, abortion is abstract. They can’t even conceive of the barbarity,” she said, after telling the story of assisting with an abortion procedure while working at Planned Parenthood. “They don’t know about the ‘products of conception’ room in abortion clinics,

On Wednesday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) formally requested COVID-19 data from Democrat governors who required nursing homes to admit patients who had previously tested positive for the disease caused by the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.
“Protecting the rights of some of society’s most vulnerable members, including elderly nursing home residents, is one of our country’s most important obligations,” Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Division Eric Dreiband said in a statement. “We must ensure they are adequately cared for with dignity and respect and not unnecessarily put at risk.”

A previous entry in this space, written after an active-duty Army sergeant moonlighting as an Uber driver in Austin shot and killed a “mostly peaceful” anti-police protester who pointed his rifle at the driver at close range, talked about the make-believe revolution that has been taking place on the streets of America’s worst-run cities this summer:
Was this a sad occurrence? Sure. It’s never a happy thing that a 28-year-old is gunned down on a city street in America.
Yet what happened to Garrett Foster was bound to happen to someone, because too many Americans, particularly among the participants

It is not every day that a politico embodies the absolute worst things they allege of their opponent. But projection appears to be Hillary Clinton’s only real talent.
The failed two-time presidential candidate counseled this week that Democratic nominee Joe Biden “should not concede” to President Trump “under any circumstances,” even if it means holding out long past Election Day.
“We’ve got to have a massive legal operation,” the former secretary of state advised during an interview with her 2016 campaign staffer Jennifer Palmieri. “We have to have our own teams of people to counter the force of intimidation that the Republicans and Trump are going to put outside polling places.

The 2020 Republican National Convention is the Trump presidency in microcosm: precedent is overturned, norms disregarded, and authorities ignored or dismissed in favor of the men and women who comprise the Trump coalition. It's polarizing and riveting. And the whole thing makes for great television.
The second night of the convention featured high-profile speeches from First Lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Eric Trump. But, once again, the real stars were President Trump and the cast of Americans who had been selected to illustrate aspects of his multi-front war on the political and media elite.

Let’s be real, the warm-up acts are never the draw. For every Jimi Hendrix opening for the Monkees (true story) there’s, well, every other opening act you’ve ever sat through to get to the main event.
But the Republican National Convention has, for better or worse, managed to flip that on its head. The most memorable speakers, so far, have not been the stars.
On Monday, Nikki Haley and Tim Scott did great. But Monday night’s most important moments came from Rep. Vernon Jones and Mark and Patricia McCloskey. Jones talked about supporting Donald Trump and what kind of havoc that wreaked in his own life.

Washington-
Norman Mailer used to say when he was upright that Americans tend to admire their politicians, if for nothing else, for getting older. That I think explains the nomination for president of the United States of former Vice President Joe Biden. He did not only get older, he got ancient. He is almost an antique. If he is elected president this autumn, he will be the oldest man to ever be elected. He will come into the White House even older than Ronald Reagan was when Reagan left office. The American people watched President Reagan struggle with colon cancer, skin cancer, a prostrate operation,

Day 2 of the Greatest Reality Show on Earth didn’t disappoint. From start to finish, Donald Trump’s convention team once again unveiled a smart program that skillfully stitched together people, policies and politics.
Every good convention needs to tell a story and the Trumpers know what their story is and how they want to tell it. They have segued smoothly from offense to defense, using both the president’s record and even his rough-around-the-edges personality to great effect.
The script is guided by an upbeat, optimistic, America-First spirit.

It is a telling measure of our mean-spirited culture that the first lady of the United States has been mocked and vilified for daring to redesign the Rose Garden.
Whether the design is pleasing or not, it was clear that the media would not be giving Melania Trump the Jill Biden treatment when she spoke to the Republican convention.
She has been the least public first lady in decades, and English is not her native language, but the principal sin of this elegant former fashion model is that she’s married to...him.

Days before the crucial Republican primary in South Carolina in 2016, Sen. Tim Scott and then-Gov. Nikki Haley rallied for Sen. Marco Rubio in a desperate effort to slow down the Trump train. The image of the three young stars was seen as a glimpse into the future of the Republican Party that most insiders argued needed to appeal to a demographically changing American electorate.
Four years later, Scott and Haley appeared before the mostly virtual Republican convention to endorse President Trump, who had been formally nominated for a second term earlier in the day, unopposed. And Haley and Scott both felt the need to come to terms

In a new video released by the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) Monday, Planned Parenthood officials give sworn testimony describing how abortionists alter abortion procedures in order to produce more intact human fetuses and, therefore, more usable fetal tissues and organs that can be sold for profit.
In 2015, the CMP and journalist and activist David Daleiden released a series of videos featuring undercover conversations with Planned Parenthood officials and medical directors. Planned Parenthood and their media allies decried the undercover videos as “edited” and claimed their late-term abortion practices were in complete compliance with the law.

The first night of the 2020 Republican National Convention was a mirror image of last week's Democratic telethon. The issues that the Democrats ignored—violence in the cities and China—were mentioned again and again. Where the Democrats showcased elected officials and celebrities, some of the most effective speeches on night one of the RNC came from lesser-known individuals such as activist Andrew Pollack, Cuban immigrant Maximo Alvarez, and nurse Amy Ford. The phrase "systemic racism" wasn't heard. But paeans to American greatness and American exceptionalism limned each address.
