Who deserves a funeral?

No one would argue that Rep. John Lewis doesn’t deserve a proper memorial. He was a civil rights icon and a long-serving member of Congress who was beloved by his colleagues. In the middle of a pandemic, however, how do we decide who gets the pomp and circumstance of a traditional burial and who has to watch their loved one go six feet under via Zoom call?
Funerals are important: they acknowledge the sanctity of life and allow friends and family to come together to grieve their loss. This reality doesn’t change based on how famous or revered an individual was to the general public:

If “overkill” is not an appropriate comment on the long drawn-out progression from death to the burial of a Washington politician who was so partisan that he refused to attend three inaugurations of presidents elected by the American people, I find myself at a loss for words.

I'll never understand why they gave this nasty political hack a six day funeral. You would think he was an emperor o ra Pope. I don't think those funerals last 6 days.On top of that ,the disgusting politicians, Obama, Pelosi, and Biden turned it into a political spectacle..

If we were not in the midst of this whole BLM idiocy and fraud, Lewis would probably have just had one service. All of these services were just the woke bowing down to BLM and making a big deal out of a corrupt politician who happened to have a high melanin content.
Lewis was a complete sell-out. What else do you call someone who joins the very political party who bashed his head in? What was the pay-off?

I don't understand the American flag draped over his coffin. There should have been a 'kenti' cloth instead. You'd have thought that America was burying royalty, instead of a hateful, hack politician. The dems never disappoint with their over the top pandering for the bLACK vote, tho. I dread the thought of what we'll see when Nasty, PIAPS, or 0bama assume room temperature.

Should have been half a funeral. His work as a civil rights activist is to be admired. But his tenure as a member of Congress was reprehensible.

Ooooh. Number 6 brings up an interesting thought. I wonder how it would have worked out if someone lit that flag on fire in support of BLM. I thought it was a symbol of hate, slavery, exclusion, violence, etc. The casket and its flag draping should have been an affront to all those lib kooks who were so solemnly showing their respect. Torch it, or at least KNEEL.

As usual the democrats turned a funeral into a campaign event and made it all political. They have no shame!

I would argue. Lewis is in the category of Sharpton, Farrakhan, Jackson, Booker, Smidgen, Aunt Esther, Jackson Lee, the other Obama and everybody else who sees a racist behind every tree holding a noose in one hand and a whip in the other.

Some funerals matter more than others. Disgusting.
I feel for #9. We've had similar circumstances.

There is a funeral, and then there is a festival. The former is an occasion of remembrance; the latter, in political terms, waving an exhorting "bloody shirt" over the casket. I find it unseemly, but politicians and the politically involved see such as an opportunity to use emotion to further a "cause". The deceased is merely a draw, a prop, which is probably just fine with them, too. Great visuals for television.

I am waiting for similar services for Herman Cain, but not holding my breath. Apparently you have to be a very partisan black liberal politician or a multi-criminal.

He is no better than my sister in laws father who was buried wrapped in plastic. They wouldn't even put his suit on him. Served his country in WWII. Started and ran his own business. No funeral. Not allowed. Tell me why this bitter partisan politician deserves all this pomp and circumstance?

I'm getting so sick of the cheapening of lives, greatness and sacrifice. When I was young, there were maybe three times the flag was lowered to half staff. All resulted from the deaths of extraordinary people who sacrificed their lives expressly for America. Today as I drive through the town, it seems the flags are half staff more often than not, and most of the time it's necessary to search for the reason. It seems we are in a state of perpetual mourning and national pride is at a nadir!

I lost two friends during our national imprisonment. The funeral homes for each stated only immediate family members may attend and everyone had to be masked and fully sanitized. I couldn't be there for either.
My sympathies to #9. Losing a spouse of 61 years is extremely hard during the very best of times let alone during what we've been forced to endure these last 4 months. I'm sure you had a wonderful life together but I'm also sure you have some great memories.

Civil rights icon? More like civil rights and present day 'eyesore'. I turned off the news when the hateful racist jerk was on. Lewis brought out the worst in people he did in me and he did in Obama at the funeral. The gall they have putting an American flag on that ugly vermin's casket. Chunk him in the clay and get it over with he stunk when alive and he still stinks after.

Well you know something is very wrong when America’s highly decorated veterans of foreign wars, many of them who fought at the Normandy invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Pork Chop Hill or the Tet Offensive are denied one traditional funeral with their families present, when at the same time liberal Democrat politicians, functionaries, and people relating to partisan Democrat politics, a few who were violent convicted criminals, are immediately granted a series of memorial services and funerals lasting for a number of days with crowds of liberal Democrat politicians and others attending, not in keeping with CDC guidelines, and State level quarantine requirements following their interstate travel.
