The president of the American Federation of Teachers warned Wednesday that strikes due to unsafe working conditions in schools were possible in Texas, Florida and Arizona — all states with high coronavirus infection rates.“If people die while they are educating kids, you eviscerate any credibility that you would have going forward about whether or not a school is safe,” Randi Weingarten told POLITICO.Earlier this month the American Federation of Teachers, which represents over 1.7 million educators, adopted a resolution which demands the only schools that should reopen for in-person instruction should be in places where

In the real world if you are on an unscheduled off time prior to a holiday, you do not get paid for the holiday. Would this no apply to a teacher who refused to go to work? Welcome to the real world. If you are not in the classroom when scheduled, you are not paid. If you decide to 'strike' prior to you scheduled date not only are you no longer paid, but any monies allocated to you since your release last year are forfeit. Welcome to the real world.

If homeschooling and the micro pods catch on these teachers might be working soon at your nearby drive through.

I read that there is no reported case of a teacher getting Covid-19 from a student anywhere schools have been allowed to open overseas.
The risk, as far as I’m concerned, is practically non-existent where I live; in the hot and dry Mojave. Any lurking virus will instantly incinerate out in the sun, especially on asphalt. I don’t wear masks, except inside clinics. I have absolutely no fear of being infected. The year, 2020, will be known as the year of the mask-wearing sheeple.

Fire every one of them. Do like President Reagan with the air traffic controllers. Get rid of them. I work in a university library and I can't WAIT to get to full time work. I'm sick of the professors and administrators who are all scared to death. My cousin recently got the corona and recovered and she is 80.

The left-wing AFT would rather strangle America with a teacher strike than allow doctors to prescribe the HCQ-azithromycine-zinc treatment to stamp out the disease. Traitors.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to completely remake the public school system. Start out with willing retirees, career-changers, and skilled workers. Mix basic education with hands-on experience. Use the existing buildings but get out of them often for some real life experience. Reopen playgrounds. Teach some personal budgeting, home economics, shop, home maintenance skills. Don’t drop reading, writing and arithmetic and definitely keep classic civics. Expel disruptive kids and propagandizing teachers. This is America............Let’s Roll!

As a friendly reminder, teachers are paid salary, not hourly, so no teacher in any state gets paid for any holiday, break, or "summers off". 'No teaching - no pay' is already the reality and always has been. They may still get a bimonthly paycheck year-round, but each check is reduced in amount to provide the twelve or 24 pays for the whole year, or sometimes mathematically adjusted for just 10 pays. Also, during the COVID lockdowns/shutdowns, they weren't just sent home, they still had to conduct class as online instructors.
Certainly more homeschooling and educational pods will reduce the need for as many public school teachers in the buildings. Perhaps they can get jobs working for the pods. But are parents going to expect high quality teaching yet pay rock-bottom prices? If that worked, there'd already be plenty of well-staffed religious and voucher schools.

We've now learned that if we are to do"distance learning" that we need far fewer teachers. One Third Grade teacher, teaching on line should cover a large school system. Tests are on line and can be corrected by computer. Think of the money that will be saved, and think of the inner city discipline problems that will not interfere with genuine learning.
Tell the Teachers Union that it is a great idea, we will be laying off 80% of the teachers and 90% of the principals.

Pay the teachers for only days they teach.
Also, give all students school choice.

Take them off the payroll and publish the "Advantages of Home Schooling" papers. The left hates home schooled kids.

The union is pushing strikes before the school year even starts. This is part of an election year political agenda. They may want to consider how unpopular teacher strikes tend to be with the public. These kids need to be educated and if these shrill, offensive leftists don’t want to do it replace them with those that do. We will all be better off.

'Science' says that we must wear masks, because they are so safe. Why would they be in danger if the children they are teaching are going to be required to wear masks, and they are wearing masks? I guess they haven't been out and about since the scamdemic started and don't know that a lot of people have been working to keep them fed and comfortable for the past 8 months.
I would think if you refused to go to work when it's decided it's time, your pay would stop. Unfortunately, the school board hierarchy is mostly ex teachers and they're trying their best to keep the schools closed.

Defund the public schools. Leave the money with the people, who can find educators in the private sector.

Education is a National Security issue. Therefore, there must be no union to cause harm. Eliminate the Teacher's Union immediately!

Not only do medical staff courageously go to work every day, but so do other people that come into close contact with the general public, i.e., grocery store personnel. So, why can’t teachers go to work? It’s not only because, as a group, they seem to be cowardly and lazy, but also because of their collective extreme liberal ideology and the political associations with their union leadership.
It’s obvious, as many have said, that the objective is to precipitate everything going bad in order defeat Donald Trump, no matter the cost.

There is a really bad mandate from the teacher's union demanding many things that are not connected to the pandemic. Close charter schools? Why do that? We are number 21 on the world education matrix. It's time to ditch unions in schools, FDR said do not allow unions in government as the unions will soon become the government. That's the same with schools. Unions now run the public school systems in every aspect. They want to stop charter schools because they actually teach the kids. High school kids that are not graduating range from 16 to 25% of the student population. In this day and age that is unforgivable. The teachers are simply not teaching kids and they cannot be fired.

Most teachers are under 50. The total death rate for Coronavirus is 0.04%. Among those under 50, it's substantially less. And according to all the "experts", if they all wear masks, there is even a substantially less chance of getting the virus.
They have a much higher chance of dying from having a wreck while driving to work than they do of dying from the Coronavirus that they pick up from work from kids that have a very small infection rate.
So all this whining about "risking our lives going back to work" really rings hollow for supposedly educated people!!!

I am confused. Right now teachers are being paid for not doing their job. Are they proposing to go on strike, where they will not be paid to do their job? And in the event of a strike...where would they picket? How would we know? Would we notice?
