The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will launch a rocket on Thursday morning to Mars on a mission that will include deploying a rover, a helicopter, and collecting samples that scientists hope may show signs of life on the red planet.“I’m exceptionally excited about what we’re about to do because we’re going to launch Mars 2020 with the Perseverance robot,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said at Wednesday’s briefing at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center. “But there is so much more going on here. This is the first time in history where we’re going to Mars with an explicit mission to find life on another world —

Wonder why. I have loved the space program all my life but honestly, why do we need to go to Mars. We can't even control our own planet.

Funny how NASA's mission has changed. Used to be we went into space to take a "giant leap for mankind." Now we go to find out if there's alien life out there. Once you jettison the concept that mankind is the crown of creation, you can believe there is nothing exceptional about the human race. Makes it so much easier to eliminate huge swaths of those who disagree with you. Anyone see any parallels with our current political/social situation? Anyone?

Big waste of dinero.
There are no little wiggly things anywhere out there on any of the planets. Call me ignorant if you will, it’s still a fool’s dream to search for alien life. It would be better to say we’re exploring for exploitation of resources, provided profits or gains can be realized, which I do not see as being possible.

I think Space exploration is necessary! I love it, I admire the advancement and sheer intelligence that is required to take on such an en devour. I think NASA is United States at its finest. It should be celebrated and encouraged.
You can watch it live on NASA TV, launch is at 7:50am EDT

Taking a helicopter with them?
Come one. It's a drone they probably paid too much for instead of going to Walmart and buying one off the shelf.

All-American except the RD-180 first stage engine built by NPO Energomash in Moscow ;-)
Part of this mission will refine oxygen from the CO2 in the Martian atmosphere. To see if human life can be sustained.
No COTS drone would operate on Mars. The atmosphere is too thin.

Helicopter, or is it a drone? Now if they were going to go to Mars and collect samples and then bring them back, then that's a mission.

Let's spend a few more millions we don't really have, and keep those NASA people working. Meanwhile, the rest of the economy can tank!

Oh, stop it. The expenses for this project cost less than a few bucks per adult US citizen, spread over at least a decade.
The returns are manifest in technology, medical advances, let alone what the future holds. And more.

You have had advances in medicine, technology and safety equipment BECAUSE OF NASA/Space Exploration!!! So quit your itching.
Having said that, I do wish we would focus more on returning to the moon and learning "the ropes of space living" there before attempting Mars. The Red Planet is essentially a dead planet and there is very little that humankind can do to make it habitable again. One of the things that is being explored right now with the probes they have right now is evidence of tectonic activity. If there isnt any, then you can pretty well figure that Mars' inner core burned out and no matter how much water we throw at the planet, life will not be returning there. Mars is an interesting planet, but Im a little tired of speculating how we will colonize the place.
Id rather return to the Moon and explore the fusion possibilities of H3 (hydrogen-3). I feel like once we conquer the ability of fusion, going to Mars will be a lot easier.

The space program is just about the only thing the government ever did that had any tangible return. The worst thing we ever did was to scale it back.
