The streaming service HBO Max will be bringing back the iconic film “Gone With the Wind,” with a newly added introduction by a black scholar, as reported by Fox News.HBO received universal condemnation for their decision to pull the critically-acclaimed film from its service last week, after the film had baselessly been accused of being racist because it takes place during the Civil War. But while the film itself has returned, it now features a sort of retroactive prologue by a black professor named Jacqueline Stewart.Stewart, a far-left activist employed by the University of Chicago, had previously written an op-ed for CNN criticizing the film, entitled “Why we can’t

Too late bozos. Your goose is cooked HBO and you cannot squirm out of your decision by having some you say scholar preach to us before the film airs. Watch the film and leave the BS out!

So, I have to get lectured and scolded by some far left kook "scholar" before I can watch Gone with the Wind? Forget it, I'll just watch Weekend at Bernie's again.

at the end of the Civil War, when the slaves were no longer slaves, most of them - stayed on their plantations.
think about that.

Black scholar does that mean he or she graduated from high school? Why not say it was the white people from the northern states that emancipated the blacks. The slaves were sold by blacks in Africa to other black slave traders who then sold them to Americans .

Instead of hearing from some snot nosed brat who thinks they know true indignities, have a listen to Ms McDaniels acceptance speech on her win. That is history. https://sites.utexas.edu/ransomcentermagazine/2016/02/26/hattie-mcdaniels-landmark-academy-awards-win/

The blacks were vocal communists back then? My own g g g -g pappy brought his ex-slaves with him at their light-skinned mammy selves request---devoted to ggg-gmammy in her helplessness. Their mulatto, according to census, children came with them. And they were given portions of land in his will.
Family is family. And I wouldn't have slaves as would have to live with (I am an introvert) If I had had slaves I would have been waiting on them since I did so with my children rather than be assertive. Me cooking and cleaning for entire slave families would have been something.
A shirttail relative in old Dominion Virginia, William Byrd used to beat his slaves after doing his dance (exercise). He lived in England part of time. He was instrumental in sending surveyors west into Appalachia ans Shenandoah valley area. If I remember right he had a big influence on the plantation era of the south.
The first man who kept his indentured black people rather than released after a tenure was a black freeman. But to know all this one would have to read. Don't bother with today's swill to get the truth but read what people way back when were writing. IMO. Be your own historian? Wikipedia and subtitle slavery and servitude tells how cash crop needed to make the colony profitable and therefore permanent.
If I were black, since I love being in this country, I would maybe think now as I do that while those in Europe were driven by the Lord to come here to create this country, that slavery was only way to get black masses here. The Irish were sent into slavery by Cromwell as sugar slaves, 100,000 some say and for instance. War weather and famine put others on move and maybe the need to escape a past-get a new start?

Very interesting thread. Why is there so much anger at someone who has a perspective on a classic film that people may disagree with? I read the op-ed and she seems to be sincere in her discomfort with the films romanticizing of the ante-bellum period of the South which she equates with approval of slavery. I always thought the message of the film was that the South paid a terrible price in lives and property for their lost cause defense of the indefensible immorality of slavery. The burning of Atlanta by Sherman's army was the ultimate symbol of this fall from grace to devastation and defeat.
My point is the same movie can be seen as both pro and anti slavery depending on your point of view. Opinion is not truth especially regarding art.

I hope this "black scholar" will explain why Leslie Howard got the role of Ashley Wilkes - - instead of Errol Flynn.
I've never been able to understand why Selznick chose Howard.

Does HBO Max assign a white scholar to put the racist films of Spike Lee, for one, into proper context?

I've seen the movie, read the book and came out still thinking racism is wrong. GWTW is, in its essence a big old love story about a feisty alpha woman who is in love with a total pajama boy who marries his cousin. She carries a big old torch for him, then meets and marries a real ALPHA man but is still pining for pajama boy. Too late, she realizes that she loves alpha man, but by then he's tired and doesn't give a damn. Oh and the South loses the war.
