The IRS estimates that nearly 5 million unopened paper tax returns had piled up at the agency by mid-May amid the closure of its offices nationwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report that POLITICO has obtained.
Overall, the IRS estimated it had a backlog of 10 million pieces of mail to open and process as thousands of workers begin returning to the offices on Monday.
In addition to tax returns, the unopened mail includes taxpayer correspondence, information returns and payments, according to the report.
Through May 22, the agency had processed 120 million returns, down 14 percent from the same point in 2019, when the filing deadline was April 15.

Dang it! Why do I insist on using TurboTax and e-file at the speed of 'trons?? I will paper file from now on. It'll be months before they get to me.

I don't buy it. The government agencies have a problem with people that are either incompetent or lazy. Yes, there are very good people that work hard and take their job serious in the government but unfortunately there are many that should be fired. I say it's time to clean house and bring on people that really want to work. I was fortunate to have a good team working for me and we accomplished more than anyone else did in the agency that I worked.

Are they still wasting resources investigating conservatives? Everyone knows it's the liberals that cheat the most on taxes.

Not just paper returns. I filed electronically with the gov site. Worksheet tax rate seems to be the difference. Still waiting. No Covid payment either. No biggie.

We sent our State and Fed out about a month ago, certified mail. Got the State return receipt last week, still no Fed. SLO-O-OW.

We need a dramatically simplified tax code. I spent dozens of hours trying to get mine “right”. A flat tax would eliminate all that and allow the IRS to cut its staff by 85%.

Ya know how to fix it right??? One page return...what you made, x 10%, = what you owe...no fancy tax breaks or any wierd accounting...just simple math...

Why can't the government paper pushers work from home? They're still getting paid. The media elites are working from home. The only ones that can't work from home are the actual producers of goods and services.

Insofar as New York state taxes, Governo Coumo wants the June estimated payment on the dot, though April's was delayed until July 15. It is inside out, like his scrambled brain.

Well, gee. I must be the exception that proves the rule. I owed as I always do and they cashed my check within a couple of days of my mailing it.

The IRS has been at home getting paid to do nothing for 2 months. So the work has piled up, and we are supposed to listen to them complain about it. Now we will have to buy the poor things lunches, provide bibs and napkins, and child care services at work.

A simplified tax code would reap vast savings in time and money for nearly everyone, but the USA cares more about IRS workers, tax accountants, and tax software vendors. Land of the free, home of the brave.

Sent in my Federal return in March because we have a fat refund coming. No sign of it yet. I guess this would explain matters ... wonder when we'll see the money. OTOH had to make a payment to the State of Wisconsin, and THAT got cashed quick enough.

You expected this particular group to pick up speed ? Most should have retired twenty years ago, but they keep clocking in to get paid.

So government employees can shop, go to parks, Walmart, Lowe’s but can’t work??? Pelosi proved we don’t need the house. Politicians & government workers received. A 3 month paid vacation courtesy of the tax payer.
