Tonight on PBS: Created Equal

Original Article

I wrote about Michael Pack’s documentary on Justice Thomas in “Clarence Thomas speaks.” The title of the film is Created Equal. We ran to one of our local suburban multiplexes to see it upon its release this past winter, in the good old days when such activities were permitted. If you missed it, however, you may want to catch it tonight on PBS, where it is scheduled to be broadcast at 9:00 p.m. (Eastern), but check your local listings. (snip) The left could not and cannot deal with Justice Thomas. They disparage him for his silence on the bench, but they don’t want him speaking out either.

absolutely brilliant, emotionally overwhelming at times. the thomas hearings in 1991 moved me from being moderate/conservative to conservative. And the best part of tonight's film was when Biden, during the hearings, was babbling about natural law, and Clarence Thomas said to the interviewer, 'He (Biden) had no idea what he was talking about."

Journalism is a long-lost art, once used to inform people, reporting news in an unbiased manner, offering reasoned opinion in a balanced way. Now the singular goal of most American journalism is to make President Trump look bad, parsing his words or taking them completely out of context. (snip) The rest of the media joined in, with headlines like, “Trump’s disinfectant ideas horrify doctors and academics.” His comments were described as “musings”, another way of saying “thinking outside the box”, a concept unknown within the Washington DC bureaucracy.

It was hard not to think of President Trump as the Queen of England delivered one of the most moving speeches imaginable in this difficult coronavirus-plagued time. The 93-year-old Elizabeth II did it to perfection. “I hope in the years to come, everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge (snip) The Brit grit the queen showed on Sunday reminds us that, to his great and enduring credit, Mr. Trump, for all his endless factual errors and sloppy misstatements, has for many weeks been trying to set a positive tone and give hope to America.

President John F. Kennedy famously observed during a gathering of Nobel Prize winners: “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House — with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.” And so it is again with President Trump’s daily assemblies at the White House featuring some of the world’s leading public health experts, epidemiologists, business leaders and economists. Clearly, Mr. Trump listens carefully to his panels of experts. And — clearly — these experts often clash.

Sickness due to the coronavirus is real. Death — at least some — due to the coronavirus is real. But how much is real versus how much is a best guess? Unfortunately, we don’t know. Even more unfortunately, we can’t even ask without facing a barrage of criticism from a variety of camps. History may very well show that the biggest casualty of the coronavirus outbreak may not be the body count, but rather the ability of a population to think critically, to analyze rationally, to arrive at conclusions based on fact and logic, not wildly fearful emotions.

The whole world is praying for a miracle that will get us all through this China coronavirus crisis. As this Easter weekend approaches, there are signs that another Easter miracle may come this year. (snip) The government bodies used by US experts to predict the number of beds, hospital rooms and ventilators cut their numbers by half today. And they are still way over actual amounts needed this weekend. The estimates for death in the US have gone down from 2.2 million to 81,766. Hospitals are not seeing the rush of patients predicted – this was from California:

The Washington Post recently touted "an alarming new scientific model" that warns that treating COVID-19 like a somewhat more severe strain of flu won't cut it. The model predicts over a million U.S fatalities unless we shut down all non-essential mingling until a vaccine is developed, "which could take 12 to 18 months at best." Pretty bleak stuff. In fact, that's about the bleakest take on COVID-19 you'll find. Let's run with it. Let's momentarily not raise a fuss about having no reason to trust the model's underlying algorithm or whatever unknown assumptions about the virus generated its scary predictions.

A federal appeals court has rejected a lawsuit from Congressional Democrats who accused President Donald Trump of violating the Constitution by receiving profits from foreign governments' spending at his luxury Washington hotel and other businesses. The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals decision did not address the legality of Trump's business dealings, but held that the more than 200 Democratic senators and House members who banded together in 2017 to bring the suit against the president lacked legal standing to do so.

CNN’s so-called media reporter Brian Stelter hid ABC’s Jeffrey Epstein scandal from CNN viewers. There’s just no question that the Project Vertitas video of Amy Robach laying out how she had nailed down the Jeffrey Epstein story all the way back in 2015, only to have ABC News “quash” it, is one of the biggest media stories of the last 20 years. Just like NBC News covering up for Harvey Weinstein, here you have ABC News covering up for a rapist and sex-trafficker, and almost certainly doing so as a means to protect Hillary Clinton’s doomed 2016 presidential campaign.

In a federal court in San Francisco, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America is currently suing the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) for illegally taping videos and racketeering, among other crimes. Founded by David Daledien, the CMP nearly brought Planned Parenthood down when it released its series of undercover videos. How Planned Parenthood avoided disaster is a story that deserves attention given what we have since learned about the agency that rescued it, Fusion GPS, the mastermind behind the notorious “Steele dossier.” In 2013, the then 24-year-old Daleiden launched what would prove to be the most sustained and effective undercover journalism project since the Chicago Sun-Times famed political sting of 1977.

In Louisiana's Saturday election, Republicans had a lot to cheer about. Among statewide office-holders, the incumbent GOP Lieutenant Governor (68 percent), Attorney General (66 percent), Treasurer (60 percent, and Agricultural Commissioner (58 percent) were all re-elected without the need for a run-off, under the state's 'jungle primary'-style system. It also appears that the solid Republican majorities in both state legislative chambers will remain intact -- with the GOP expanding its Senate advantage into super-majority territory by picking up a pair of Democratic seats:

A friend, who thinks politically as we do here, phoned this morning after just hearing Barr's comments doubting that Obama or Biden would be criminally prosecuted. We both would love to see it, but consider how destructive the Dems' legal efforts to get Trump to testify so they could prosecute him have been for the past three years, and then imagine what could happen if the precedent were set to prosecute future presidents of either party. Such a spectacle would draw worldwide attention and obliterate everything else our country needed to be doing that would have more impact on our country's, and even the world's, future.
