It’s an ill wind, they say, that blows no good. Even the coronavirus can produce a heartwarming story or two. The Guardian reports on the dire state of the U.S. newspaper industry:
Media outlets across the US have already responded to a huge drop in advertising triggered by the economic shutdown by sacking scores of employees. Some newspapers, just as demand is at its highest, have stopped printing – reverting to a digital-only operation that is just as vulnerable to the whims of advertisers.
The decrease in advertising was swift, as businesses tightened spending due to the economic impact of Covid-19.

WHAT? You mean the media is impacted by the "economy"? That real people get laid off when the economy is damaged, not just "rich fat cats"? That Trump's concern for people losing their jobs is justified?
I'll bet that the fired newspaper employees have a new view on the balance between being safe from the virus and getting the economy restarted. No business, no ads, no ad revenue, no money to pay newspaper reporters (or TV news people). Did they think that they got paid from unicorn farts?
"the for-profit model that supported local news for 200 years has collapsed"
No, it hasn't. News merged with Hollyweird and "reporters" started to think of themselves as entertainment artists of a sort. Well, entertainment is consumed by people who find it appealing. If you can't stand Country music, you are not going to go to a Garth Brooks concert. The media's ratings, the evaluation of their "entertainment value", are in the pits so no one is listening to the show. People are still going to the movies but no one is interested in Lindsay Lohan. Media has gotten drunk, ugly, and mean and no one is appreciative of their new "talents".
NO public money for media. In fact, stop funding NPR. There is a simple principle involved here, "Who watches the watchmen?". The media is the overseer of all aspects of society but who watches them? The public. We exercise our authority via readership/viewership. Readers translate into fertile advertising ground and the money to pay the media. When the media displeases the public too much, readership declines and ad revenue dries up. Bye bye newspaper/tv news show. The media has gotten into the power game and think THEY exist to tell us what to do instead of their original role of public servants. They have forgotten that their appeal to US is what earns their paycheck. AND that they are as dependant on the economy as everyone else.
The fix is easy. Know your audience. Appreciate your audience. Serve your audience. Be accurate and truthful.

Let the shakeout continue. Temporary inconvenience, permanent improvement, as the old PENNDOT signs used to read.

Spot on #3 as is this article! Objectivity and non-partisan investigation fell by the wayside long ago. My grandfather was the editor of a major newspaper in NYS; I remember my parents receiving a morning and evening paper (Dad a Democrat and Mom a Republican). The newspaper reporting over the last several decades has descended into a liberal bias that is beyond imagination. I, too, used to subscribe to the BDN, a microcosm of journalistic prejudice. Admittedly, I miss the comics. Burn, baby, burn!

The professor lives in an academic bubble where if you don’t choose to pay to be lied to and insulted why they will just confiscate your money through taxing and force feed it to you ‘for free’. These are the insects teaching your children.

I truly hope that the Denver Post, aka the New York Times - Denver Version, finally goes away. The post is a lousy liberal rag which publishes the daily prattle that comes from the Denver deep state. If Denver ever publishes another newspaper, bring back the Rocky Mountain News, but, re-staff it with a more right-minded publisher this time.

Left in place for long, social distancing will devastate travel, transportation, entertainment and sports. Without the TV advertising revenue these industries generate, the broadcasting media will die as well. Fox Sports has nothing to offer. Ditto for the other networks. Distancing may save lives, but it will kill the economy. Ask anyone who lived during the Depression if they think a second one would be worth it.

Apparently the art of thinking ahead has been lost by these Leftist rags. Somewhere along the line they decided that it was worth it to alienate half of their readership by abandoning real journalism and taking the far easier route of printing what was transferred to them by their liberal college professors. They are now in a situation similar to that of a kid who starts a big grassfire and is surprised that the wind has changed.

The hope that the NYT and WAPO may not be too big to fail is premature. Layoffs at these, and other papers are likely to hit the least biased first. They will probably survive, leaving only the most frothing at the mouth useful idiots to create fake news.

Ink on paper is going the way of scratchings on rocks. Economics and technology struck the print media at its most vulnerable time, while it was engaged in propaganda and hysteria. It's all over but the whirr of the presses...and those will shut down soon. Consumers don't read news on dead trees because it is "late" and outdated when it is first brought to market. They don't buy much of it because it is rubbish, opinion not news. Take out the celebrity gossip and the rags are reduced to zero "content".

The WaPo can get their money from Bezos, and the NYTs from Carlos Slim. I don't think either have any other subscribers.

#1 made me smile. Oh, the sweet irony indeed! The MSM could have had a major role right about now, what with the acute need for accurate information and a trapped population with much time to consume it. But nooOOOOoooo. Since the 1960s, first subtly and covertly and later ham-handedly and overtly, they slighted accuracy in favor of advocacy, making themselves merely outlets for Democratic/Glitterati position/opinion. The falloff in circulation/viewership showed any objective observer how small the market for that really was. But our heroes thought that if only they spoke more shrill-ly, less obliquely, and more condescendingly, they'd win. And their frustration only grew as their repeated and increasingly desperate and hyped attacks on all Republicans (remember "Ray-Gun"? "Bushitler"?), and then especially Trump, failed to take down their target. When COVID came along, they thought they finally had him. So they increased the voltage and amperage even further -- only to panic people into the lockdown, which caused an absolute economic disaster, which then caused them themselves to lose their jobs. Now their frothing attacks only amuse people on their Twitter feeds, and not in a good way.

The fall of the media began began in the late 60s with Johnson's Viet Nam War, The misreporting of the Tet offensive, Woodward and Bernstein, the Dem Leftist Takeover the University "journalism schools". Those of us who were there can bear witness. Virtually none of us whom are WW2 war babies have subscribed to a newspaper or watched the fake MSM in decades. The "media" has made itself a deadly threat to the survival of this Nation, the Constitution and the Republic that our fathers fought and lied for.

It’s not just newspapers.
Of all our Phoenix “Morons in the Morning” radio programs our most arrogant nit-wit has to be Beth McDonald of KEZ 99.9. She has always had a nasty streak in her.
Small business owners and people who just wanted to go back to work were protesting at the capital. She had the temerity to refer to them as morons! Really!! Good people who want to continue working just like Beth was doing. Good people like that are not morons. It's too bad covid isn't spread by putting your foot in your mouth.
I do hope these small businesses remember her employer when they decide where to advertise in the future.
Hey! Lazy Boy! Are you listening?

You mean due to the economic impact of the LIberal-colluding media's hysterical shut-down-the-economy overreaction to covid-19.
