I believe the headline writer meant, "rumbles." And hopefully for that beautiful region and great folks out there, this doesn't mean the Yellowstone mega volvano is stirring.

Apparently he couldn’t work “temblor” in, so the headline writer opted for tumbles as the possible verb form? That’s the AP. That is one heck of a jolt, though.

Seismic activity of this nature is not common in the Bitterroot Range. Yes, the AP 20-something who wrote the story headline could have done better with the grammar. But, Mag 6.5 shakers will happen every now and then...anywhere. In this case, the epicenter was very shallow, just 10km or about 6 miles. Glad to hear that there are no reported injuries.

We live about 50 miles as the crow flies from Stanley, strange, but we felt a little movement, like the wind blowing and that was it. It didn't even wake up the dogs.

The Asspress doesn't use editors, just propagandists. Imagine being a reasonably religious resident lying in bed there with an illness and suddenly the Earth begins to shake. I would be quickly getting my life in order.

The shaking from quakes generally increases exponentially the closer you get to the epicenter, once you factor out the effects of local ground soil and rock differences. Being able to feel the quake doesn't mean being in the quake, and while more than 2 million could feel this, there aren't a lot of places in the lower 48 states of the U.S. more remote than the middle of the Bitterroots. The chances of this having any bearing on the Yellowstone supervolcano are comparably remote, though, #3. While the hotspot feeding Yellowstone WAS located near the quake at one time, it has migrated over 2 hundred miles to the east in the millions of years since then.

It's probably too much to hope that this will remind the media writers that the word "epicenter" applies to earthquakes, not epidemics.

Evidence for the rainforest suggests the climate was “exceptionally warm.” The rainforest dates back to the mid-Cretaceous when sea levels were around 550 feet higher.
