“We know the numerator, but not the denominator.”
— Leading medical researcher, name withheld, discussing the statistical effect of the coronavirus 2019
One of the most difficult problems in assessing the current coronavirus 2019 (hereinafter COVID-19) pandemic is sorting through the conflicting expert opinions and the evolving statistical data that have — with an enormous assist by the mainstream media — plunged our nation into a state of panic and paralysis. How did we get here? And just how serious is the threat posed by COVID-19?

"any accurate estimate of COVID-19’s spread or fatality rate is at present unknown" AND will remain unknown throughout most of the outbreak. Further, numbers obtained earlier from one or another country CANNOT be reliably projected to a new outbreak in a different country. The disease progression in China looks different than the one in Italy. The number of factors are too diverse to really nail down exactly why. Age of population is certainly an issue but other things have an impact as well.
"Thanks to the pandemic, the handwriting for bringing our manufacturing base home is on the wall." The SILVER LINING wake up call. Just as we should be energy independent, we should be "medically self sufficient" as well, especially from Communist countries and potential conflicting states. The wake up extends to food and other essential commodities as well, especially, it appears, toilet paper, if for nothing else than peace of mind. The production facilities should not only be primarily HERE but also capable of rapid ramp up in emergency situations as well as the distribution facilities to handle emergency demand.
Sometimes people need to be "hit over the head with a 2x4" to get their attention. We should go forward "woke" to the importance of these issues. Unfortunately for dems, they have been on the wrong side of them for a long time.

Flu strains of ever evolving strengths have been, and will continue, to bedevil mankind. However, we now have common world-wide travel and ease of movement between countries which makes new virus' spread at ballooning rates. The bell curve of initial cases amplifies that the long-term functioning of society, as well as the short term functioning of our medical facilities, does require unusual restrictions on daily life and personal movements. I believe President Trump's quick actions have lessened the overall health and economic impacts the Chinese virus will have on the United States, and will be used by wise governments in the future.

You can not expect people to be fair and miserable when they are panicked. Thank the Media. It's a good thing that prescription drug sales are limited or people would be dying from everything but Cornona.

I meant "fair and reasonable" but oddly, "miserable" works too.

This is a very reassuring article. BUT, look at the FOX News headline. 'World in Peril...200,000 cases globally and death toll SOARS to 8,000.' REALLY?
There are approximately 7-8 billion people on this planet. Now every life is precious....well unless you are a Democrat. But, it is sad that 8,000 people have died from this flu. But 8,000 is not even a statistical blip given a world of 7-8 billion people. This is what causes panic. This is what causes hoarding. This is what eventually might shutdown the food chain as people will be too afraid to come out and work the farms, staff the food stores. And this is from FOX. Imagine what the other news outlets are saying.
Somehow after this is over, the press must be made accountable for the disaster THEY have created.

Excellent article. Since COVID-19 is a first time event there can't possibly be any experts on it, especially in the media so they need to shut up.
Just as the government can't solve every problem, the medical industry can't solve every problem. Why should victims be taking up hospital beds when they can get the same care at home because there IS NO CURE? If I happen to catch this bug I intend to stay at home until I either live or die. Going to the hospital can only make it worse for all parties.

I ventured into our local Wal Mart yesterday to get some pet food and other items and the shelves were bare, and I mean bare, of paper products. Any kind of paper product. There was no TP, paper towels, napkins- nothing! What was even sadder was that 15-20 people were standing around the ends of the aisles waiting, on the rumor that a truck was coming in with more stuff. Knowing that those people would clean the shelves within minutes, should more product appear, shows that hoarding is not over.
On a positive note, Dollar General announced that the first hour after opening each morning would be restricted to senior citizens. This is good, since many seniors can't stand around waiting for trucks, or enduring the long lines.

This is the Cloward-Priven strategy come real!
The whole idea is to create a collapse and then blame Trump and the Right. Many fools will sadly believe it and hand the House, Senate and White House over to our Demo-rat saviors. Repeat of 1929/30 crash and 1932 election. Then the media will drop the scare tactics, tell the masses that the danger has finally passed and our savior Biden (?) gets the big pat on the back. Trump will become Hoover.
How to stop it? The same way you face any immediate & imposing threat --- try to show no fear and send out the message there will be serious repercussions if attacked and everyone will be in a world of hurt, both the hunter & the hunted.
8,000 deaths worldwide and we have lost $9 trillion in our stock market?! That many people die every day worldwide from snake bites!

Largely agree with the article.
We keep hearing estimates, and it is doubtful any of them are accurate.
The 1918 Spanish flu? Medicine has progressed significantly over the last 100 years. Cannot compare corona virus to the Spanish flu.
The other thing is the United States is not China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, or Japan. Each country handles public health differently. Therefore any estimate based on global statistics is unlikely to be valid for the United States.
Corona virus is not the swine flu or H1N1 so any stats based on them are likely inaccurate.
Very likely, corona virus is less severe than previous viruses for the United States. So far, the death toll is not there.
Turned on Dr. Phil yesterday. He was playing to an empty audience. His guests were some medical experts and they were practicing social distancing. They offered good advice like washing hands regularly, but one of them suggested people put foul smelling substances on their hands as a reminder to keep them away from your face.
Everyone is over reacting. The general public. The medical industry. The media. Our politicians. it doesn't help that its an election year. There are people out there deliberately causing a panic and trying to bring down the economy for political gain. We have shortages. Have seen several places where business is down over 75% and might as well be closed. Businesses are being forced to close down in many places. The government's handling of this crisis is a crime. The panic they caused is far worse than the virus itself.

No need to hoard toilet paper . . . or bread. I read something on a neighborhood message board this morning about a senior whose husband is blind. All she wanted was a loaf of bread and was disappointed to find shelves bare, despite a special early morning time set aside for senior shoppers. That made me sad but I also knew as I read further down the thread someone would respond, and sure enough they did. Someone, a neighbor, went out of their way to find a loaf of bread and deliver it.

The National panic over the availability of toilet paper and other commodities has been caused by the so-called mainstream (liberal) media propaganda machine along going 24/7 with other media outlets like Fox News that have been pushing the panic button 24/7. They have done that both thinking that it will allow the leftist and liberal Democrats to gain some political advantage in the coming election, and for their own commercial advantage, as the fake controversy that they are pushing causes more people to watch their reports, thus boosting up their ratings, which allow them to charge their sponsors more money to air commercials.

I don't care much about the flu bug are lack of toilet paper, but I am absolutely sick over what is no doubt happening to my retirement funds. I bet they've lost half their value over the last two weeks.
So much for me being able to retire comfortably in a couple of years.
