CBS is going to pay Tony Romo a stunning amount of money to commentate NFL games.Romo, who might be the most popular commentator on TV, has agreed to a $17 million annual salary with CBS, according to Andrew Marchand. His total deal could be worth up to $100 million. He is now the highest paid commentator in the history of football. (Photo) It’s pretty wild how successful Romo has been off of the field. He was a damn good quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, but he’s become a superstar as commentator.

Wise move Mr Romo. The way ESPN frames a play they would have ruined your career.

Well good for him. I do not listen to him anymore. Talking over the game, still analyzing a play while the next play is happening, always inserting digs about the Patriots and his smugness has turned me off.
I DVR games. Then start them well after the game starts so I can fast forward over commentary. And mute when I must.
Yes, I'm from new England.

There is NO such word as "commentate." Romo may be hired to comment, or be a commentator. I guess David was out when they taught proper grammar and English usage; or perhaps he wasn't taught this at all. So sad.

He might be very good at it. (Don't know that I've ever heard his commentary. My viewership is down since Kaepernick.) But $17 million - more than a million a game? NOBODY is worth that much. Even Obama doesn't earn that much for his pontification skills!
However, I'm a free market guy. Good for Romo!

When he gets over himself a little, he may be a good commentator. I agree with the poster who says he talks too much...

It seems Romo has few fans here, but he brings fun, excitement, and raw fan-like enthusiasm--not to mention understanding of what's about to happen--to the game, which is why he commands the big bucks. It also means CBS will be heavily invested in broadcast rights for the foreseeable future, rather than cede to streaming platforms.
If CBS was smart, they'd bring Romo's fun and enthusiasm to CBS golf, which is in worse need of some excitement.

Romo was a "damn good quarterback"????
No, he really wasn't. He would have flashes of greatness, throwing passes that seemed impossible.
But in every "big game" he played, he found a way to choke and lose it. "Damn good quarterbacks" get you to the playoffs, and challenge for a Super Bowl spot, year after year. In 14 years of quarterbacking the Dallas Cowboys, he only led them to the playoffs 6 times, and only won 2 games in the playoffs.
Tom Brady is a "damn good quarterback". Patrick Mahomes is a "damn good quarterback". Tony Romo was a mediocre quarterback with good stats that never translated into wins. Huge difference!!!!!
But Romo is a nice guy, and I don't have any issues with him making whatever the market will bare. I don't watch the NFL any more, so I will never see him commentate.

Re #7, Romo may be OK for football, but he has been terrible when he was anywhere near a golf broadcast. You just cannot rev up golf. Fans watch it; nonfans give it a pass. Generally, the quieter it is, the better. In golf, the less commentary the better...

#4, the dictionary is wrong.
I refuse to accept commentate as a word.

CBS should have been required to interview Kapernick for that job. Where are the articles and outrage at this?

We’re all entitled to our opinions, but I am wondering if anyone here could do a better job. I think Romo is great, and kudos to him for getting that much money. I’m all for anyone doing a job and making big bucks while doing it. I’ll look forward to his commentary.

Sorry, but he’s dreamy. I love hearing him commentate and I think he does a great job. I’m sure part of his large paycheck is due to his dreaminess and appeal to women. Just saying. Jim Nantz is great too and they are a good fit.

I guess that ruins the notion that he will be coaching in the NFL as many low-information fans thought--
