Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Deputy Secretary James Byrne was fired on Monday, just five months after being confirmed for the job by the Senate. “Today, I dismissed VA Deputy Secretary James Byrne due to loss of confidence in Mr. Byrne’s ability to carry out his duties. This decision is effective immediately,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said in a statement. The statement provided no elaboration on why Wilkie lost confidence in Byrne or the circumstances surrounding his ouster. A VA spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for elaboration.

Read in another article that it was due to his mishandling of a legitimate sex allegation in the DC VA. Don't know anymore than that.

The VA is in deep, deep trouble. It's a honeypot for incompetent civil service management. (The workers, themselves, are mostly Veterans. The management is not.) Imagine any Clintonite working in management of a hundred-billion dollar agency armed with the defense of "it's for the Veterans" whenever anyone complains about what's being done (and not done). The Veteran support non-profits are going the same way. Sad but true. Desperately in need of an adult in charge.

Democrats reap bitter
fruits of impeachment as
Trump reaches his apex

President Trump is absolutely sitting on top of the world. This is the highest point of his presidency so far. Consider what has happened in the last four days, and the reasons become clear. On Saturday, Republican senators stuck together. In voting not to prolong a farcical Senate trial with a predetermined outcome, they refused to honor the politically motivated impeachment that House Democrats brought on a flimsy pretext. On Sunday, the Trump campaign aired ads during the Super Bowl. He advertised to a politically mixed sports crowd, but the point of the ads was not to rile up his base the way most candidates do during primary season.

Donald Trump served various television news personalities a lunch described by one White House guest as soup and filet of sole Tuesday—but soon the assembled anchorpeople were eating out of his hand. Much to the disappointment of folks at CNN, nobody at the long table—who included NBC’s Lester Holt and Chuck Todd, ABC’s David Muir and George Stephanopoulos, and CBS’s Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan—bothered to ask why the president had gone out of his way to exclude the cable network run by Trump’s former friend Jeff Zucker. “MSDNC isn’t here as well,” Trump quipped—to polite chuckles but zero protests

As of this writing (early afternoon on Tuesday) the results of the Iowa caucuses — the Hawkeye cauci, as Rush Limbaugh calls them — remain unknown. How in hell is that possible? Because the intellectual titans who insist that they can (if only we give them sufficiently uncontested powers of official coercion) impose expert rational “scientific” management on everything from health care to global energy markets in reality cannot organize a two-car parade in Toeterville. Our would-be managers and planners are, in fact, useless as teats on a boar hog. How incompetent are the 2020 Democrats? Incompetent enough to make the 2020 Republicans look . . .

Will Rogers famously quipped, “I’m not a member of any organized political party. I’m a Democrat.” Monday’s Iowa caucuses certainly confirmed the Democratic penchant for chaos. They also highlighted the party’s suicidal tendencies. Any doubt on this score should be cleared up by Bernie Sanders’ Iowa showing, the ulcers it is causing at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and the glee it inspires among Republicans. For the GOP, his campaign has no downside. If Sanders is again denied the Democratic nomination due to DNC skulduggery, his supporters will stay home in November. If he captures the nomination, Trump will crush him. This view is not restricted to the GOP.

Miley Cyrus writhes around on the floor in a plastic red second skin, aggressively grasping her curves with her claw-clad hands down to her studded crotch. “Don’t f**k with my freedom.” She lectures again and again through her lyrics, as the phrases “virginity is a social construct” and “tough titties” flicker strobe-like on the screen. The unabashed vulgarity of the once-child star who gave us the best of both worlds now defying goodness in this hellish spectacle was disgustingly hypnotic — I couldn’t believe what my eyes were absorbing. This is what my mind flicked back to as I took in the hyper-sexualized Super Bowl LIV halftime show.

The NY Times has a follow up report on the disaster created by the app intended to streamline reporting of the Iowa caucus results. Earlier today the Democratic Party had released a statement saying the app had accurately recorded data but had a glitch when it came to reporting that data. But according to the NY Times, the majority of the 1700 precinct chairs couldn’t even get the app to install on their phones, in part because it had never been approved for use by the Apple store: Two people who work for Acronym, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to risk their jobs,

A kayaker who disappeared during a week-long solo trip in the Florida Everglades was rescued Monday after days floating on his back in the chilly waters, authorities said. Mark Miele, 67, of Virginia, was due back on Jan. 29, seven days after he embarked on the kayaking trip in Everglades National Park, but never returned, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook. Four days later, National Park Service rangers found a bag containing his wallet and phone washed up on the bank of the Lopez River. Rangers asked the sheriff’s office to assist in a search for Miele on Sunday, officials said. Deputies downloaded the data

Former Congressman Kweisi Mfume won the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday in the race to finish the rest of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings' term in Congress. Mfume, who served as the district's congressman for five terms between 1987 and 1996 and went on to lead the NAACP, beat out a crowded field of 23 other Democrats vying for the seat, and which included Cummings’ second wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, and his former staffer Harry Spikes. Caucuses are a terrible way to pick a nominee. There is no secret ballot, so every nosy neighbor and busybody who prefers another candidate knows who you’re supporting. There is no access for those who work nights or need babysitters. And this year, Democrats have a fairly arbitrary 15 percent threshold — no delegates for anyone who falls below that line. The live television coverage does not generate a warm and fuzzy feeling from Iowans gathering in church basements and high school gymnasiums. The two rounds of reallocation meant that supporters of those below the viability line started trying to form alliances out of Survivor,

The Iowa caucus data operation just crashed and burned. That means that it could take days to get find out who actually won the Democratic contest – the first of the 2020 presidential election cycle. Gobsmacked candidates have come out to throw confetti, drop balloons, and declare "on to New Hampshire!" There's nothing else to do except to declare victory and move on. No one really knows, right? Joe Biden's lawyers have sent the Iowa caucus organizers a sternly worded letter ordering them not to reveal the winner until the results are cleared with them.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been nominated for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize by two Swedish lawmakers. Thunberg, 17, captured global attention for leading a student strike in her home country of Sweden to raise awareness about climate change. Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling, both members of Sweden's Left Party, argued that Thunberg’s international tour to combat climate change is worthy of the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. In nominating Thunberg, Holm and Svenneling said the teenager had “worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis.” They argued that reducing emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is “an act of making peace.”

Wow, that was one hell of a State of the Union Address. President Trump seized the center with a powerful, patriotic and utterly centrist speech. And then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reinforced his message with her oh-so-symbolic ripping up of the text. What, other than channeling the alienation of the Democratic base from the great American center, was she thinking? This was the very best of Trump — generous, bipartisan (with a few barbs) and good-spirited. He not only got congressional Democrats to stand and cheer, but he also credited the legislators in the room for working together across party lines to do right by America.

Rush "made the complex understandable," as he liked to say, using irreverent humor to make his points. It was effortless for Rush, doing all of this with "half his brain tied behind his back."
