Kimberley Strassel on Lev Parnas'
claims about Trump, Ukraine:

Lev Parnas has a credibility problem -- and so do some of the media outlets that have been covering him, Wall Street Journal columnist and editorial board member Kimberley Strassel said Thursday. Parnas is the indicted associate of President Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani -- and this week his media blitz ahead of expected court appearances included interviews on MSNBC and CNN. "The problem ... for the media is that this goes beyond the question of Lev Parnas' credibility," Strassel observed on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle." "I mean, that's a big first strike. But also the information that he claims to impart is irrelevant or unbelievable.

Prince Harry and Meghan will no longer use their HRH titles and will not receive public funds for royal duties, Buckingham Palace has announced. The couple will also no longer formally represent The Queen. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they intend to repay £2.4m of taxpayer money for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home. The new arrangement comes into effect in spring this year, the palace said. The statement comes after senior royals held talks on Monday about the future role for the couple, who this month announced they wanted to "step back" as senior royals.

Ever since she began explaining how her Medicare for all plan would be funded, and how she would pass it, Elizabeth Warren has been sinking. Ahead of last week’s debate, her camp leaked a story that her friend Bernie Sanders met with her in 2018 to discuss plans for 2020, and that at this meeting, Sanders had said that a woman could not win the presidency. Leaking this in the hours before a debate guaranteed that Warren would be asked a question about it by the moderators of the CNN debate. Sanders unequivocally denied saying as much. It has been known that Sanders had in the past

Peter Shumlin, the former governor of Vermont and a Democrat, had this to say about Bernie Sanders, his fellow Vermonter: What I’ve seen in Bernie’s politics is he and his team feel they’re holier than the rest. In the end, they will play dirty because they think that they pass a purity test that Republicans and most Democrats don’t pass. What you’re seeing now is, in the end, even if he considers you a friend, like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie will come first. That’s the pattern we’ve seen over the years in Vermont, and that’s what we are seeing now nationally.

Can a woman get elected president? Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s possible disagreement was a cause célèbre at the most recent (and boring) debate among six Democrats vying for their party’s nomination. Is their question the same as “Can a woman be president?” The question presumably asks if a woman can be a successful president. The two questions are related: if enough people think a woman cannot be a successful president, then that woman won’t be elected president. What qualities are necessary to be a good president? People will disagree, but there is no doubt that women have been outstanding heads of state:

The crisis that has engulfed the royal family, sparked by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s bombshell announcement that they are jumping ship, is about far more than just their personal future. If that wasn’t the case, it wouldn’t be so important. Families fall out, scandals come and go and the monarchy marches on. But this announcement and the extraordinary Sandringham summit convened by the Queen was about something much more fundamental. The subject of discussion was what the monarchy does, who it is for and how much longer it will continue in its current form after the Queen’s reign. And, indeed, whether it should survive at all.

Democrats’ strategy for the Senate impeachment trial is apparently to turn it into a never-ending Senate investigation — even though that was supposed to be the House’s job. Start with the General Accounting Office opinion that Team Trump’s temporary hold on aid to Ukraine constitutes a violation of the law. Maybe — but the GAO is no kind of court or other legal authority. If this was a real issue, the House could’ve raised it long ago. “We forgot” is just an old Steve Martin joke. Then there’s the claim that assertions by Rudy Giuliani crony — well, ex-crony — Lev Parnas just plain compel the Senate to consider “new evidence”

Over the weekend Bret Stephens had a smart column arguing that people should not discount the possibility that Bernie Sanders could win both the Democrat nomination and the presidency. He’s right. I mean, he’s right in the cosmic, moral sense because if we’re going to be honest with ourselves, Trump versus Sanders is the choice this country clearly deserves. But he’s also right in the arithmetical sense. The easy part is seeing Bernie’s path to the Democratic nomination. Nate Silver’s primary model gives him slightly better than a 1-in-5 chance to win the nomination outright and a 1-in-4 chance of winning a plurality of delegates.

The Iowa caucuses, which have always provided rocket fuel to winning presidential candidates, may fail to achieve liftoff this time. The media, whose usual fixation on Iowa has been eclipsed by their obsession with impeachment, are very likely to devalue the caucuses. Much of the chatter has focused on how the impeachment trial will pull the Democratic senators—Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar—off the trail in the final two weeks of the contest. Instead of pressing the flesh in Des Moines and Dubuque, they’ll be trapped in the Senate chamber, six days a week, unable to speak in their role as jurors.

Communist curmudgeon Bernie Sanders is having his moment, threatening to actually win some of the early primaries and maybe even the nomination. This is bad, at least for the Democrats, since the idea of a weird crusty admitted socialist as their candidate is problematic – the problem being Americans aren’t insanely stupid enough to elect this guy president. We hope. Also note that I am excluding Vermont, New York and California from that statement, if you have somehow confused those mutant provinces with America. But with Bernie rising in the polls, and his poisonous ideology gathering steam among the Democrat base, can we really laugh off this Soviet Union-loving crank?

In her latest show of desperation, Sen. Elizabeth Warren is now promising to implement her student loan forgiveness plan by executive fiat, adding legal questions to an already reckless proposal. With less than three weeks to go before Iowa, Warren needs to make a splash in Tuesday night's debate. She's teetering on the edge of disaster in the first Democratic nomination contest, and a poor showing there would doom her presidential ambitions. After her campaign spent yesterday pushing the idea that Sen. Bernie Sanders told her in a private meeting that a woman couldn't be elected president, she's trying out a new gimmick

MSNBC host Al Sharpton reacted to Tuesday night’s debate by claiming he still doesn’t see a clear front-runner in the Democratic presidential primary race who can go up against President Trump and win. Appearing on “Morning Joe” Wednesday, Mr. Sharpton echoed fellow commentators’ criticism that the debate lacked enthusiasm. “The missing quality is, that if you are going to be the next president, you’ve got to take charge and take Donald Trump on,” he said in a clip flagged by the Washington Examiner. “And if you can’t take on and take charge in the debate, what gives people the confidence you can do that with Donald Trump?

If the Trump era has taught us anything, it's that large numbers of white people in the United States are motivated at least in part by racism in the voting booth. Donald Trump ran an openly racist campaign for president, calling Mexicans rapists and criminals, regularly retweeting white supremacists and at least initially balking at repudiating former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Trump made it clear in his campaign that "Make America Great Again" meant that America was greater when white people's power was more sweeping and more secure. White voters approved of that message by a whopping 58 percent to 37 percent.

This year, a week-long program "that includes a story slam, brunch with drag queens and civil disobedience training for activists" was held in the run up to Saturday's event,

This is some news that should absolutely terrify Democrats. They know they need Wisconsin and other rust belt states to beat Trump in 2020 but the crowd at Trump’s recent rally there proves winning the state is going to be extremely difficult for them. More than half of the people at Trump’s rally were not even Republicans. Red State reports: Mind-Blowing! 58% Of Attendees at Trump’s Wisconsin Rally Were NOT Republicans, Up from 43% in Ohio Several days ago, Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale posted statistics from last week’s rally held in Toledo, OH, which showed that 43% of attendees identified as either Democratic or Independent. I called that figure “stunning” in a recent post.

House Democrat leaders pursuing the removal of President Donald Trump from office appear reluctant to let go of their investigation after voting to impeach him last month, even after Speaker Nancy Pelosi transmitted the articles of impeachment to the Senate this week. “Plainly, there are loose ends here that the House should have tied up and that, importantly, the House is continuing to investigate,” former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Andrew McCarthy wrote in an editorial Wednesday, the day House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) finally handed over the articles of impeachment to the Senate.

We all died in 2016, and our punishment for our bad decisions is to relive the presidential election every single day, with the exact same cast of characters. The streaming service Hulu released the first trailer Friday for its four-part Hillary Clinton docuseries titled, Hillary. (Although “docuseries” may not be the best word for it. “Hagiography” seems more appropriate.) Director Nanette Burstein reportedly shot more than 35 hours of original interview footage with Clinton and used a total 1,700 hours of footage to create what CNN describes as an “intimate portrait of the one-time Democratic presidential candidate.” 'One-time?' Have we already forgotten about 2008? "There was nothing off-limits,"

President Donald Trump made a stark appeal to black Americans during the 2016 election when he asked, “What have you got to lose?” Three years later, black Americans have rendered their verdict on his presidency with a deeply pessimistic assessment of their place in the United States under a leader seen by an overwhelming majority as racist. The findings come from a Washington Post-Ipsos poll of African Americans nationwide, which reveals fears about whether their children will have a fair shot to succeed and a belief that white Americans don’t fully appreciate the discrimination that black people experience.
