A UK granny is cracking down on Christmas dinner.Grandmother Hayley Garbutt, from Filey, North Yorkshire, is expecting to host about a dozen family members, including three adult children and their partners, four grandchildren and even some of her friends. So, she’s planning to charge her guests about £35 ($43) a head to join the decadent Christmas meal. According to Garbutt, 52, the door price for dinner will help her cover a smorgasbord of gustatory delights, with multiple main dishes, homemade sides, artisanal cheeses and Champagne. The eccentric grandma plans to take whatever cash

Hilarious! She sounds like a real character, and the meal she intends to put out sounds like the bargain of the year...

Sounds fine to me. My mom didn’t have a lot of money so we all paid for the food, wine etc.

The dinner plate looked heavy with plain white rice, brussell sprouts and sponge cakes.
Not a whole lotta protein (Meats) or dressing or even cranberry sauce. I'll pass.

Sounds cheap for all the work that is involved in preparing a feast. No reason for grown family members to get a free ride year after year.

Government might encourage freeloaders, but not Granny!

Seems like we have heard this story before. Grandma is probably fed up with being chief cook and bottle washer and providing gifts while the family eats, sits and watches TV without helping.

She's just taking her cue from the government. Give us money and we'll give part of it back. A house crammed full of guests is fun for some and pure stress for others, especially if unruly kids are present. In most families, taking up a collection like this would effectively end the tradition.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this story; she might wish to consider her family riches. Ours has gone from over twenty folks at Christmas Eve dinner years ago down to just four last night. She might wish to consider the riches she has.

#4, she said she would offer beef, turkey, lamb and chicken. That is protein enough for anyone.

I tend toward the disgusting. Most gramas take pride in their Christmas presentation but appreciate help with the preparation and also are desirable of sharing responsibility for presenting some of the entrees with the guests. If the granny is strapped for cash that presents some consideration but I don't believe this one has that problem. The best Christmases I remember were when all of granny's kids brought food and helped get things ready while the grandkids played games. Granny made the turkey and ham, everything else was provided by the kids and granny had time to play with the grandkids.

I've always wondered. After mama or grandma dies who takes their place cooking? Which daughter, son, cousin or shackups?

#16 I did for my wife's family after her Grandmother died. Let me tell you the first couple of Thanksgivings and Christmas' were pretty rough. But everybody survived and keep coming back for more.

I had 15 course Thanksgiving meals for 20 years with no help ....I should have charged $100 but all I wanted was a thank you which I never got. All they did was eat, take the leftovers home & compliment my great dinners to other people????

From what is described it sounds like Grandma's prix fixe menu is a bargain.
We had a prix fixe Thanksgiving meal at Petite Violette and it was one of the best meals I've ever had.
My sister asked if I needed a knife for my filet. Nope, fork tender. And it wasn't one of those predigested tenderized filets like so many restaurants. It was just a very good cut of meat cooked to a perfect medium rare. But for Christmas tonight it's Standing Rib Roast cooked by wife.

The idea of contributing a part of the feast was uncommon in the Britain I left 50 years ago. Pot lucks were unheard of. Maybe things are changing there nowadays. I far prefer the American tradition of helping to share the work for a big family celebration.
