The lines in my DeKalb county, Georgia, polling site wrapped around the corner. Each of the hopeful voters in our predominantly black election district waited about two hours, alternately sitting, standing and passing the time with southern pleasantries, moments away from voting for America’s first black president. And it wasn’t yet the official voting day.
I had gone home from my graduate studies in New York City to vote early. I knew Barack Obama wasn’t perfect, but he offered a bold vision following the financial crisis – and that’s what we needed. I was back in Harlem when election day results trickled in.

I kept waiting for the punchline that she was going to vote for Trump. Ahh, not to be.

Hope 'n Change was all they needed in 2008. They swooned at his feet.

FTA: "In hushed circles – dinner parties and barber shops, group chats and family gatherings – the relatively universal enthusiasm for Obama tapered as his presidency came to a close" sheesh! I guess the idiot left wanted beheadings and stadium executions in America during 0bama's reign. He only managed to have those in Libya, Syria and Mexico (Fast and Furious, exponential growth in cartels). Every time I listen to a leftist I reach to see if my wallet wandered off on its own.

Obama completely fulfilled the requirement of those voting for him--he was the first African-American President. In reality, nothing more was really expected of him. When your campaign phrase is "hope and change", there are no real expected deliverables. Hope defined nothing specific of a campaign promise and the change was the pigment of the occupant in the White House. I live in a college town, and many of my white college professor friends voted for Obama for no other reason than they wanted to tell their grandchildren that they voted for the first black president. (Yes, there is a difference between being educated and being smart).
In contrast to that, a lot of people who had given up on politics managed to show up in large numbers in 2016 to vote to Make America Great Again.

This young woman has all the credentials, black, attorney, higher education, activist, etc. She defines herself as a "broke millenial." One would expect a little better from her. One would be disappointed.

Past the title this article is a huge disappointment. When she mentioned Trayveon Martin and Michael Brown as examples of how her 'people' have been wronged I realized she is just one more house servant perpetually angry but forever enslaved on the plantation.

Don't expect some groundswell of Trump or Republican votes in "The Community". They may not vote for the Dem candidate, and they likely will not vote for PDT, either. The hatred of Republicans is very deep seated, compounded over the years regardless of what Lincoln may have done, or anyone else.

FTA "We saw Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown and Rekia Boyd shot and killed. We saw the beer summit and respectability politics. Despite doing many things “right”, it wasn’t enough"
What the hell is she talking about. First a mishmash of false accusations of police misconduct where the facts demonstrated a monirity was at fault with other cases that do have police misconduct. If the black is always innocent regardless of facts then sure lump it all together.
What is respectability politics? Beer summit to undo Obama's blatant racism?

it is simply not our young highly educated author who will vote for Trump. It is the down in the daily grind making a living and raising a family people who actually work. Black or white or Hispanic or whatever other meaningless (to us) category you want to dump us in. Your high (no pun intended) minded Obama fix accomplished nothing. Our deplorable president has kept every promise he made as far as the #resistance could not stop him. I suggest we change the names of our political parties to Elite and Deplorable for the next election.

Recent polls are showing that about one third of Black voters intend to vote to re-elect President Trump. There are good reasons for that, as those Black voters know that with the very good Trump economy anyone of any color, ethnicity, or race can easily get a job these days, the earnings from which gives them real buying power, rather than back during the Obama era where Obama and the Democrats offered them a bucket full of “Hope” with which they could not even purchase a chicken sandwich. Many Black people also know Trump from his many years on TV as “the Donald”, a time that Black folks also observed Trump being granted awards by Black civil rights groups. So many Black folks know that Trump is not a racist. As Trump has said “What have Black folks got to loose by voting for him”?

"Obama wasn’t perfect, but he offered a bold vision following the financial crisis"
Missed a word; Obama wasn’t perfect, but he offered a bold STUPID vision following the financial crisis.
"Hope for many of us has been replaced with resignation."
Maybe you are hoping for the wrong things, foolish things.
"Her messaging about black issues – such as segregation and voter suppression"
Segregation is illegal as far as I know and Black voter suppression is generally a myth.
"Some of us believe restructuring society is possible" "19% of them supporting the Vermont senator Bernie Sanders"
Yes, the Communist. If that is what you are "hoping" for, I'm hoping you never get your wish. Opportunity is readily available to Blacks who get an education and learn to work hard, just as for the rest of us. Expecting the government to rescue you is a dead end path as are Socialism and Communism. Our society is structured better than any other on earth. Fine tuning is always ongoing but societal restructuring would be fatal.

I know a lot of the local blacks and they will be voting by color. They all wanted Gilliam for governor.
