Highly educated “experts” rule today’s advanced societies, but their advice on how the rest of us should live – often enforced by government coercion –is increasingly exposed as premature at best and mistaken, incomplete, ignorant, or fraudulent at worst.
Yet another bit of diet advice from “experts” is turning out to be an exploding cigar. High cholesterol particularly LDL cholesterol has been demonized for allegedly bringing on heart attack deaths. But an intriguing analysis of data published in Medium.com seems to show that total mortality is enhanced by high cholesterol levels, even LDL cholesterol. As author P.D. Mangan writes:
… from a public health standpoint, it seems a mistake

Says that high cholesterol may help people live longer — helps fight disease like cancer. Also, there is less occurrence of suicide among those with high cholesterol.
Maybe eating what you like — in moderation, of course — helps people be happy and less grumpy. Good mental health contributes to good physical health.

Personally I'm a big believer in vitamin B. I prefer to obtain mine via Beer Bacon Bratwurst and Butter.

So should I keep taking a statin or not? I can assure you my GP and my Cardiologists will say, "yes" for reasons that include fears of malpractice claims if they go against whatever the government says. In their defense, I'm very sure they believe their advice is good.

George McGovern, after his epic failed presidential run, went back to D.C., and held hearings on nutrition and health. McGovern held a Ph..D. in History, but fancied himself an expert on nutrition. He was not.
Dr. Atkins, creator of the Atlins low carb diet, was called before McGovern's Senate committee, and really abu87sed by McGovern and other senators. Atkins, while a medical student, had gained weight, and had a eureka! moment, when he thought about Eskimos and their dietary habits - high protein, high fat, minimal carbs - and thus was born the Atkins diet. It was wildly popular, and widely criticized by the medical community, as well as grain farmers. And breweries and distillers. (I quit drinking and smoking, went on the Atkins diet, and lost about 100 pounds in 9 months, as I was completing my doctoral studies.Alcohol consumption was essentially forbidden by Atkins, except for an occasional glass of wine.)
McGovern, with experts stacked against Atkins, called the diet doctor to testify, and raked Atkins over the coals. The diet, said the historian McGovern, was bad for the patient's health, cholesterol would be dangerously elevated, blood sugar messed up, and, he said to Atkins, 'your diet even causes a loss of appetite!
Atkins smiled, and said, "well, Senator, it is a diet...' (a loss of appetite, of course, was a good thing.)
By the 1990s, the medical community was grudgingly admitting that the diet worked, but shouldn't, and cholesterol did not get elevated, but they didn't know why it didn't. (The body manufactures cholesterol, apparently as needed.) Adult onset diabetes virtually disappears with an Atkins diet, and people lose weight. And there are way fewer drunk drivers on the road.
Now, in 2019, Atkins is somewhat of an unhonored hero. Atkins type diets are widely used, and it is now accepted that Atkins was correct when he used the term 'killer carbohydrates.' He died, by the way, in a fall on a NYC sidewalk, which was ice-covered.
Class is dismissed.

The only studies that have ever been conclusively tied to heart disease relate to the ratio of HDL cholesterol and Triglycerides, period. When a person gets on a low-carb diet that ratio plummets below even the region of concern. Proof again that our manufactured high-carb lifestyle from the infamous FDA "food pyramid" is what's killing us.

And by the way, #7, I got that information from Dr. Atkins' "bible" of health knowledge the, "Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs." In that he cites study after study confirming how we're more in control of our health through feeding our bodies what they need for growth and repair than most prescription medicines can ever do. My copy is literally falling apart from overuse.
The new, "Ketogenic Diet" is just the Atkins' Diet that stays in Phase I, and renamed.

I have been saying this for over twenty years. Long ago I read William Campbell Douglass' "Eat Your Cholesterol" .
This is an updated version:
https://www.amazon.com/Eat-Your-Cholesterol-Live-Great/dp/9962636191
Douglass was in the same class as Atkins, but not as well known.
After reading Douglass, I found Atkins, and his Predecessors.
After all William Banting created a recommended (lo-carb) diet for weight loss in the 1800's.
This shows that the "experts" really don't have a freaking clue.

Meanwhile doctors are handing out statin drugs, with very dangerous side effects, to nearly everyone.

Back in 1972, my physiology prof explained how the high cholesterol deal was a manufactured crises. Back then it was for the benefit of the food companies who wanted to market an entirely new line of foods labeled "low fat" in addition to the standard fare. As the man said, why buy one when you can buy two for twice the price? Fast forward about 20 years and big pharma jumped in with the goal of (no exaggeration) getting every man, woman and child on statins. The MDs then propagandized the whole thing to do just that. I refused to take them because I never exceeded the threshold. It was funny to see the doc sputter and complain about my resistance. Side note: Low fat milk needs to be supplemented with something so it doesn't have the consistency of water. They use carbs. Whole milk has 12g of carbs per serving, while low fat has 20g. Now, which is better for you?

It's odd, the contents of Dr Scarsdale's diet of many years ago is the same. While others have changed the name of the diet, It appears to be the same. ...Carbs are bad, fatty food good. My motto has always been eat what you want & control your portions. Food is a habit just like cigs & alcohol, it's all about control. I never allowed myself to become overweigh because I hate the word diet.

Hardly a day goes by that I don’t get a scolding letter from some insurance company, like Humana etc, demanding an explanation or excuse why their customer (victim) isn’t prescribed a “statin”. Their letters help to fill the local land fill.

My drs have tried for years to get me to take a statin. My cholesterol has been between 227-267 since the beginning of testing decades ago. Because of liver issues from childhood, I refuse. The other day, Walgreens actually called me to tell me because I'm diabetic I need to be on a statin. Nope. No can do. I know we like to think we have excellent health care in this country, but it's been hijacked by pharmaceutical companies. Very sad.

Know your own body. Unless you have a serious disease, I say diagnose yourself. You're bound to do as good a job as your doctor these days. A lot of doctors are trained on how to send patients for tests.

#14 I am sure my PCP gets those letters from Humana. One doctor almost killed me trying to please my insurer. I was in ER twice in one week while trying to find the correct medication. I ended up calling the "hospital doc" a lower orifice. Vitamin E really helped me, but I am told no way with a heart problem. My cholesterol dropped about 50 points recently because of eating walnuts. Some of those tidbits you read work.
If I am going tomorrow, I am eating ice cream today.
