My neighborhood in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a perfect example of the income inequality, poverty, and legacy of racism that fuel so much political discussion today. Historically, Allendale was known as the “Bottoms,” the black side of town in the Jim Crow South, crowded with shotgun shacks and separate and unequal schools. Fannin Street, once a commercial strip with bars and brothels, was the name of a pounding Leadbelly song; it’s just a few blocks from where my husband Emmitt and I live today, where we mentor neighborhood kids. Allendale was poor and black a century ago, and remains so. Census numbers tell the story: 31 percent

Just keep the borders open so low skilled "free stuff" seekers can illegally inundate the USA and we will realize that we have created thousands of Allendales throughout this country.
But then it will give the democrats another reason to tax "the rich" and middle class.
Vote democrat--its easier than getting a job!

Governments can only help enough to keep one in poverty.

Excellent article that provides a very personal glimpse into the poorest communities. God bless the author and her husband and a Community Renewal International.

"she spent the money on her drug and alcohol habit" and giving her MORE money would just lead to more drug and alcohol use.
"“Free health care” sounds great, but it doesn’t mean much for children if their parents won’t take them to a doctor." And government makes a lousy parent.
"Children come to us without the confidence to understand that persistence pays off, and without adult role models to show them the fruits of working hard." And a government focused on "helping" is useless in teaching the lessons of self reliance.
"It takes much more than government benefits to change attitudes and transform lives." So true. These people live in a subculture of America, created by government creating a plantation of hopelessness.
"Today, we’re the second-safest district—and not because of the police alone." The answer is, as they discovered, “We Care” AND "WE DEMAND" a safe community, even arresting those in the community who break the law.
As Conservatives have been saying, only to be labeled racist, the Black community needs to heal itself and the culture surrounding it. Government can, and does, help fund this but the people need to envision and embrace the needed change. Black leaders, in general are NOT sending the right message, claiming instead victimhood and trying to shake down the government for more money; something the dems, as usual, are happy to play into. That will NEVER work. These failing communities are "addicted" to a broken culture and we have only been enabling them.

One of the most interesting articles I have ever read in some time. I know people who were born in abject poverty, but through their own gumption and often with the help of mentors have left their old life behind and become successful. The government simply can't do it, and it often hinders instead of helps.

The government intentionally hinders instead of helps. That’s the way they keep their sinecure jobs. Most of the government are demonrats and keeping the poor people poor is how they keep their voters.

Even scarier is that Democrats want to make it, "We are the government and you will do exact as we say or you will be branded a criminal and punished accordingly."

A good, productive life begins with a good education and that's right where it fails for many people because the government controls education. Yes, there needs to be a caring set of parents and a surrounding culture that does not contain drugs and crime. I hate the word, "mandatory" but single mothers who want to live on government money should first be sterilized and so should the baby daddies, those who can be found and identified. It's no small feat to take care of somebody else's six children because they have already had the wrong start in life. Most do-gooders find that their care is neutralized by the peer pressure on the street where the kids are pressured to do drugs and commit crimes. The government is no help at all and it shouldn't be handing out cash to anybody. Somebody else worked to make that $3000 that is being received by that tramp to buy drugs and probably support her boyfriend. It's a mess and it's a government-created mess.

Broken families=broken homes=broken lives. Children seek out role models. Either good or bad. Good read.

I hold the editors of the NYT and the faculty of Harvard directly responsible for this outrageous situation. Know the enemy before you can hope to defeat them.

Government or God? I prefer to have God guide me rather than government. After all, government is made of people. People (government) usually don't have the whole picture but God does. Like #9 suggests very accurately, I grew up in a broken family which equates to a broken home and broken lives. The only comfort I find is my faith in God. He has guided me through so much. Long story but I will keep it private. It is concerning that Democrats have been successful in taking God out of society. People think government is a good alternative. Not.
