Breaking news: Prosecutors call for
Felicity Huffman to spend just one month

college admissions scandal

Felicity Huffman has been recommended to spend just one month in jail in connection to the college admissions scandal where she pleaded guilty earlier this year to mail fraud and honest services fraud. The actress admitted she had paid $15,000 for her daughter Sofia's SAT test to be corrected to help her gain entry to the University of Southern California. After prosecutors originally called for her to spend between four and ten months locked up, the recommendation filed Friday by the U.S. Attorney's office asked for her to be jailed for 30 days. Following her time inside, Huffman, 59, will be on supervised released

Comments:

An odd application of our 2-tiered judicial system. Shouldn't she receive an apology or something, given that James Comey et al walk free, laughing?

Did they at least kick her ingrate kid out, or was it all for naught? Additionally, would I be willing to pay with a month in the slam to get my kid in the top-tier college of his choice, plus $15k? Very possibly. I mean, like, why study? Compared to what parents endure 30 days on prison rations is Club Med.

I think what they did was wrong, but I don't think the parents should be going to jail or prison. The people who were setting up the transactions and TAKING the bribes need to do time. Some parents are going to go to whatever extremes they can to help their kids.

What she did was highly unethical. The daughter should be kicked out of college and mom needs to pay a large fine. In the big picture, why should she go to jail while Shillary walks free? Is her action any worse than putting unqualified people in college with a free ride based upon the color of their skin? Where is the person who let her daughter into college?

It seems to me that it would be more fitting for her to have to pay for five students who actually qualified for scholarships to go to college each year for the four years her daughter would have been taking the place of one of them. Five is an arbitrary number but I would rather see some student who actually earned the spot get it rather than her spend the time in jail although both would be OK too.

Only a month? This is just another example of a two-tier justice system. One rule for the special entitled and another for the "sock it to them" peons. Does the kid keep her paid for college slot? That's what I want to know. Crime pays if you're an elitist entitled one.

Brooklyn—A United Federation of Teachers director has been charged with attempting to coerce a minor into sex as part of a sting operation, according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court Friday. According to a statement by Detective Damon Gergar, who was involved in the sting, 41-year-old Jason Seto contacted him via a dating app that Gergar says people "primarily use to meet up to have sexual contact." Washington—The White House is considering a plan that would keep most refugees who are fleeing war, persecution and famine out of the United States, significantly cutting back a decades-old program, according to current and former administration officials. One option that top officials are weighing would cut refugee admissions by half or more, to 10,000 to 15,000 people, but reserve most of those spots for people from a few countries or from groups with special status, such as Iraqis and Afghans who work alongside American troops, diplomats and intelligence operatives abroad. Another option, proposed by a top administration official, would reduce refugee

Boeing’s new widebody jet, the 777X, suffered a setback Thursday afternoon during a high-pressure stress test on the ground when one of the airplane’s doors exploded outward. One 777X employee working in a nearby bay at Boeing’s Everett plant said he heard “a loud boom and the ground shook.” The accident happened to what’s called the “static test airplane,” one of the two airplanes in any new jet program that are built for ground testing only and will never fly. It was during the final test that must be passed as part of the airplane’s certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

On Wednesday, Brown had a heated exchange with Raiders GM Mike Mayock where he unleashed a barrage of foul language and went as far as threatening to punch Mayock in the face. The exchange came because Mayock was unhappy that Brown had posted a part of a letter the GM sent him on social media. The letter had to do with the $54,000 the team fined him for a pair of unexcused absences from practice during training camp.

Sen. Edward Markey expressed worries Thursday that Amazon’s video doorbell Ring and its partnership with law enforcement could lead to increased racial profiling, particularly with people of color. Mr. Markey wrote a letter to Amazon’s chief executive saying he was “alarmed to learn that Ring is pursuing facial recognition technology” and offering police departments access to Rekognition, their face-matching program. The Massachusetts Democrat added the technology raises “serious privacy and civil liberties concern” that “could easily create a surveillance network that places dangerous burdens on people of color” in areas where Ring has partnered with police officials. The crowd became rowdy and a man chucked a carton of milk at one of the officers—who quickly ducked out of the way. Donald Trump wants people to think he’s a winner. So why does he act like a loser? Winners convey a sense of effortless superiority. They don’t have to work at it. You just know they’re above it all. If someone tries to criticize them, it’s beneath their dignity to worry about it. It’s just a little speck they brush off their shoulder. The Brits are good at that, Boris Johnson especially. We still don’t know how things will turn out there, but I expect his aplomb will carry him through. “There are no disasters,” he once joked. “Only opportunities. And, indeed, opportunities for fresh disasters.”

I can’t believe we’re still doing this in September 2019, nearly a year after her defeat by Brian Kemp, following numerous critiques of her claim, and months after Abrams herself stopped insisting that she won. “I have no empirical evidence that I would have achieved a higher number of votes” if everyone whom she believes should have been allowed to vote had done so, she told the NYT in April. She was questioning the basic fairness of the election, she stressed, not necessarily the outcome. So why are Democratic presidential candidates still not only questioning the outcome but insisting forthrightly that she won?
