New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he is considering requiring bicyclists to be licensed and registered like automobile drivers currently are. According to a report in the New York Daily News on Wednesday, the mayor also wants to expand the city’s safety regulations, which already have won it a nanny-state reputation, to include requiring Citi Bike renters to wear helmets.(Snip) Advocates of bicycling argued that regulating and licensing something discourages it—the opposite of what the city ought to be doing. “Requiring helmets and bicycle licensing is counterproductive to Vision Zero because they’re a deterrent to cycling,”

Doesn't NYC have a lot of bicyclists injuring pedestrians? Maybe they do need safety training.

Something I can agree with de Blasio on. They want all the advantages of using the streets without having follow the same (or any rules) as the rest of us.
Same thing for those electric scooters and bikes.
You take your vehicle on the road, you get licensed to prove you know the rules of the road and you get ticketed when you get caught not following them.
Hey, that's how they do it in Europe (since we are constantly told we should be following the European model.)

I actually agree with him on this. If they want to use the streets that are built for cars, they need to start contributing to the upkeep instead of whining about how poor the conditions of the roads are. And if they want bike paths, maybe their paid fees could be put towards that to help defray costs. Time to stop being parasites on our backs bike riders and start sharing the load.

de Blasio's had another brain stroke on how to raise more free money for wasteful spending just like Cuomo did with his scheme to raise more money by requiring new vehicle plates. Well NYC voters, you elected him; now you live with him.

Bicycle messenger services are heavily used in NYC because bikes can navigate those clogged streets faster than cars can. Many of them are hurt or killed because they are careless and unsafe in their haste to be somewhere else. It's not a matter of licensing it's a matter of common sense.
Good point on the discouragement of doing something due to over-regulation. Pennsylvania now has a shortage of hunters and fisherman because the respective oversight commissions have complicated and nit-picked the rules so much that you can't enjoy either one without bringing the thick manual with you that tells you right down to the millimeter how large your catch must be, how many points on the antlers and how long they need to be and almost to the level of how many hairs it has. This green gestapo can even come into your basement, open the freezer and take inventory of what you have harvested. Ever try to measure the antlers on a panicked buck that is running full tilt and will be out of your scope in about three seconds? Nanny staters don't realize how stupid this stuff can get but it gets worse all the time. The result is loss of revenue to pay the patronage hires who are awarded these useless jobs.

No doubt there will be a bike license fee. That's what this is really all about. de Blasio wants more money. There is an easy solution for anyone that doesn't like this. Vote him out. Its NYC so that will never happen.

Hysterical! I love it. Tax the crap out of them and force them to take out liability insurance as well.

Very enlightening, #8. I am a form PA resident, born and raised there. Shows the ultimate end of "The State". Saw an article a day or two ago about some country singer who got cited for catching a fish without a license. Think about that, will you. Land of the Free, home of the Regulated.

Sick of the carefree, careless bicyclists in our area, who are now treated with the same deference as pedestrians, I believe this is a swell idea. If I have to allow 3 feet between my vehicle and the biker, no matter where they choose to ride, double and triple abreast rather than in single file, then I’d like to see them educated, tested and licensed the way I have had to be every 5 years.
We have given up miles of traffic lanes to allow the bikers a “safe” place. Now they can earn it.

This is the first thing I have ever agreed on. Lots of money is spent on chopping up the road lanes for a few bicycles along with decals, which seem to wear out within a year. Bikers need to pay for any costs associated with bike lanes. Those road were paid for by people who drive cars. At age 75, I couldn't ride a bike to Costco to make purchases, let alone local grocery stores. I am on opiates for my back issues, hate them and they are truly not that effective,
