If conservatives want to keep
their guns, they’re going to have
to find a way to stop mass shootings

Original Article

When it comes to gun control, conservatives have been fortunate in their enemies. Every time there is a mass shooting, the left renews its calls for gun control, but it spends a great deal of energy on futile and ahistorical arguments about the wording of the Second Amendment, or making hackle-raising, invidious comparisons with Europe. And when it comes time to actually suggest what should be done, Democrats generally suggest policies recycled from the 1994 crime bill, such as background checks and a ban on assault weapons. There’s little evidence that these policies did anything to curb gun violence the first time

Comments:

Does the writer believe there are no gun owners on the left?

Sorry, Meghan, but you're not dumping your problems onto us. Virtually ALL of the mass murderers in this country have been democrats. Usually egged-on by you leftist liars at the WaPo. Conservatives will keep their guns if they want them. If the leftist press is going to continue to spout off hate and lies, then Meghan and her ilk are going to have to find a way to stop their comrades from mass murders. There, fixed the article for you all.

The way to stop mass shootings is concealed carry. The shell game of how many people around me have a weapon will deter almost all crime. Good guy with a gun takes out bad guy with a gun. Your buddies in Hollywood use the formula in their movies all the time. The title to the article should read, " If Liberals want to keep their freedom, they are going to have defend everyone's freedom."

If I had any guns that were not manually operated, I believe I would be seeking out long term hidden storage solutions just in case. Possibly sealed containers for burial, or maybe false walls or ceilings. Too many so called republicans appear to be buckling under the pressure already, and we know the president will because he already has.

Hey nitwit, keeping guns does prevent mass shootings. If a certain grandma had brought hers into the Walmart there probably would have been a lot less carnage. Somehow you idiots think that criminals and mass murderers are going to give up their guns if you just tell them they can't have them. Well good luck with that one. Now I want to see you take the 300 million guns out of the hands of American citizens who have every right to own them. They get their rights from God not some mealy mouthed journalist who work for the Propaganda Paper of Record. The Declaration spelled out our rights a long time ago and the Constitution told us how to hold onto them. SO you and your worthless paper can talk to someone who is willing to give up their God given rights to others. As for me and mine we are not willing, so come and get those rights if you think you can. We have been willing to fight and die for them for over 200 yrs and the WAPO is hardly the one to change that.

From the article: "Democrats generally suggest policies recycled from the 1994 crime bill, such as background checks and a ban on assault weapons. There’s little evidence that these policies did anything to curb gun violence the first time..." That's just a damn lie. The crime bill that was passed into law, which modernized police forces and put dangerous criminals behind bars (and kept them there), succeeded in dropping the homicide and violent crime rate by over 50%. Liberals are attempting to reverse this by ignoring the record. They are hoping that voters will have short memories, but most of us are old enough to remember how bad crime was 25 years ago, and do not want to go back. Their ideas are to release dangerous criminals (more Willie Horton programs), hamstring the police, and use the resulting increase in crime and an excuse for more gun control.

I am sick and tired of the Left telling the world what to do. I think responsibility to stop Mass Shootings falls directly on the PARENTS (or Wife or Best Friends) of that Shooter! THEY see them everyday, and know they are troubled people. Parents who ignore these young men, maybe even feel they can't control them, should ask for HELP. I would bet the signs were there on this young man, but if anyone even suggested their son needed to see someone or be put in a Mental Institution, all hell would break loose! Parents are responsible for the upbringing of their children. Schools also are somewhat responsible, they see these kids everyday and most of them are troublemakers in School. They should be charged with a crime (if they do something criminal) instead of having their crime washed from their records (think South Florida). But the Schools are LIBERAL and they don't want to be labeled as tough on those poor little innocent kids. GUNS are not the problem! Parents are!

Of course conservatives would like to stop mass shootings, but there is no way to do that in a free society. The US population 330 Million People (new census will tell us there are more) if only 1/10th of 1 percent are homicidal maniacs like these morons that means you are walking the streets with 330,000 of them every day. And that's not even counting the ideological crazies. It can be taken as a measure of the goodness and decency of the American people that these events do not happen with greater frequency. "Any one who will trade freedom for security deserves neither" Is an important idea, Trey, but do not overlook the even more important ending: "and will lose both!"

We don't have a gun control problem in the US we have a serious Progressive Liberalism problem, it is at the root of the mass shootings, every damn one of them! In the interim we need to repeal the NFA and have National conceal carry law enacted.

"If conservatives want to keep their guns, they’re going to have to find a way to stop mass shootings". It seems to me that, even though they try to hide it, every mass shooting ties back to liberals in some fashion. The El Paso shooter was a registered democrat, the Dayton shooter was a Warren, Sanders supporter. In the past most of the mass shootings were perpetrated by leftist haters. I think the left may be where we have to start in order to stop mass shootings. Their hateful rhetoric always gets a pass from the left wing media and in fact gets amplified by that same media for maximum effect.

Yes, the Constitution can be amended and yes, the composition of the Supreme Court can change. But the first is virtually impossible with regard to the Second Amendment. And the second would take generations, not just years. And there is plenty of evidence that mental illness plays a large role. The Secret Service says 67% of mass shooters are known to have been mentally ill. And that doesn't include the ones we don't know about, like the Las Vegas shooter. I also think those numbers are low. Do they include Muslim fanatics like the Fort Hood or San Bernardino shooters? I think the number is probably over 90%. And crazy people who want to kill find ways even without guns. The Boston Marathon bombers, for instance. Or the 9/11 terrorists, for that matter. Identifying the dangerous mentally ill is something that should concern everyone, not just conservatives.

No governor yet claims jurisdiction over the International Space Station but the astronauts have a lot of explaining to do when they return to earth. It’s not as though they lacked for space. Governors ordering around people 250 miles above their states seems far-fetched. But so, too, did the notion of governors usurping the role of legislatures. Eight months after the initial coronavirus lockdowns, citizens docilely accept the idea of a single person dictating the laws that govern millions of people.

The practice of democracy in our constitutional republic flourishes in the presence of contradictions. Democracy, itself, is bound by our inalienable rights, bestowed to us by our Creator. These rights, not given to us by our government by any majority or by any vote, cannot be rescinded, for they were not wrought by man. Voting is a contradiction for it is both public and private at the same time. Its process is intended to be secret, but transparent. Its agency is intensely partisan, but its effect is intended to be unifying. The legitimacy of voting must survive despite the contradictions intrinsic to the process.

Will Judge Emmett Sullivan accept President Trump’s pardon of General Michael Flynn? No one has suggested that possibility, other than The New York Sun. The general’s case, though, has become a bonfire of the vanities of one district judge who has denied the presumption of regularity to an official act of the United States government — meaning Attorney General William Barr’s attempt to drop the case. So why would Judge Sullivan credit President Trump’s workaround of a pardon? We understand, the pardon could be the least fettered of all the powers that the Constitution grants to the president.

Many conservatives have moved their social-media accounts to the more freewheeling Parler, and often have slammed the supposedly monopolistic Facebook and Twitter as they’ve decamped from those sites. I have chuckled at some of their overheated parting rhetoric — especially the widespread misunderstanding about the meaning of the word “monopoly.” A monopoly is, as the Oxford dictionary explains, “the exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.” Quite obviously, if one stops doing business with a company and heads over to its competitor, then the previous company is not by definition in exclusive possession or control of a service.

There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred. After weeks of hype, CBS finally televised Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.
