Republicans have long idealized Texas as a deep-red frontier state, home to rural conservatives who love President Donald Trump. But political turbulence in the sprawling suburbs and fast-growing cities are turning the Lone Star State into a possible 2020 battleground.
"The president's reelection campaign needs to take Texas seriously," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said in an interview. He added that while he remains optimistic about the GOP's chances, it is "by no means a given" that Trump will carry Texas - and win its 38 electoral votes - next year or that Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, will be reelected.
For a state that once elevated the Bush family and was forged into

Texas and Florida turn blue and Repubs will not be able to win the electoral college. Dems know that. That’s why they are flooding in the illegals. It worked in California and now it’s a one party state.

Drudge has so many contradictory pieces on the site, one doesn't know what to think. Three stories on dems gaining ground, and three or more on dems in trouble. Considering that the dems taking Texas story is probably coming from the socialist haven of Austin, it has to be taken with a gain of salt. One could write a story about Republicans taking California as well. Which one would be more accurate?

Just saw yesterday my Rep. Pete Olsen is not running. Reliably red Fort Bend county, southwest of Houston, went to Clinton. We're overrun with illegals and middle eastern and eastern foreigners. This is very troubling.

The assumption is that most Hispanics will vote dim. I'm not sure that will hold with a growing economy.

"The demographics are moving in our favor..." - Dick Durbin
Demographics are destiny, and the Republicans in place like Fort Bend (where I happen to be at tne moment) haven't a clue. They got wiped out in the last election. The days of YeeHah and all that are gone. What needs to happen is a complete re-messaging and hard work to connect with the various "minority" communities on the terms they seek. The Dems are very effective at talking about families, safety and well-being. Republicans not.

I agree with the poster, but am not optimistic. If the election's about Democrats, they lose. If it's about the president's tweets, he loses. Whenever Trump tweets, he places the seats of every Republican in swing districts at risk. Trump true believers call them RINOs and assume a Devin Nunes or a Matt Gaetz will step in to take over. Won't happen. Democrats win, as they did over 40 times in the mid-terms. My congressman, in a long-term Republican district now trending Democrat, is facing the fight of his life. Yet every time the president tweets, the press calls and Democrat harpies lash out. He might well lose. Will Hurd, a strong Republican in a majority Hispanic southwest Texas district had $700,000 ready for the next election. He won the last election by less than a 1000 votes. This week he saw the handwriting on the wall and now he's gone. Trump already has the true believer votes, but he's not going to win without the votes of those who don't like him, but see him as the lesser of two evils. If he sticks with the message in his rallies, he wins (and he'll never be mistaken for Romney). But if he tweets, he loses. Surely he knows this. Why does he continue to do it?

Those 40 "moderate" Democrats, many of whom played the I'm really a conservative card to the rubes back home but did Nancy and Chuckie's bidding once they hit the DC Beltway once there NOW have to justify what their record -- or lack thereof-- really is. Of course, that means the GOP has to hold their feet to the fire.

It would not surprise me if we find out that the resignation of Will Hurd was designed to torpedo that great nomination of John Ratcliffe. Now he has to stay in the House and hopefully keep Texas in the Red column. As to Ted Cruz, still being an idiot. He beat the pants off you once Teddy boogers, don't make him do it again. He takes this entire country very seriously. Why do you think we elected HIM and not you?

Without their delusional wet dreams - - leftists would have nothing to cling to.
After the 2020 elections - - the gnashing of teeth and the suicidal tendencies on the left will reach Biblical proportions.

GOP retirements are normal when in the minority, and the GOP rule against more than 3 terms as committee chairmen. Two year terms that require constant fund raising also disincentivize. But there is really good news. The Democrats have gone crazier, and it cannot be hidden with messaging.

Re #5, but we California Republicans are told every day (here) that we should leave California, it is hopeless, bla bla bla….
It makes no sense to run away. When those who are promising free everything to everyone are surging, stay put. And we do fight. But we are seriously outnumbered where it counts: voter registrations.
Just as moderate Democrats are unhappy with the leftward swing of their party, I expect moderate Dems in California are tiring of the largesse that the liberal “rulers” like Governor Newsom are laying on the illegals and paying for it from their pocketbooks. Dems too pay taxes, buy gasoline and so forth. Have to be feeling the same liberal-inflicted pinch that everyone else is …

Hate to say it, but the Democrats have a plan, and the GOP doesn't.
Even if you're in a tight race, I think the GOP candidate should stay, make the Democrats really earn it, and spend money.
Republicans need to ensure they're telling people day-in, and day-out, what the Democrat policy will mean for their particular district.
Texas is booming with oil and natural gas, but the Democrats are determined, and stated, they want to stop all fossil fuels. So, where do all those high-paying jobs go? What about the mortgages from those people? Can they still fund the schools, police and fire departments without the tax revenues?
Make it personal. Cast doubt on their radical policies.
But most of all, people like to know you are FIGHTING for THEM, which is why Democrats say it so often, even though they don't do anything.

As a voting Texan I think the odds are very long that Trump could lose Texas. The demographics have changed some with all the economic refugees moving in from Ca, Il, Ny... Hopefully they figured out the reason their jobs moved here was due to the clowns they elected to oversee their respective states. Maybe you can fix stupid by showing them that a working state government that provides good roads, affordable housing, good schools (if you stay out of any major city) plus low taxes is possible if you elect people to govern who do not see you as sheep to be sheared for their own self aggrandizement or to show their misguided Social Justice creds. It has been more than 20 years since a Democrat won statewide election here and I do not see that changing in 2020.

Don't forget Epstein is getting ready to sing and the deep state is about to be cut off at the knees. (hopefully). I'm sure as many repubs as dems will be hit. Maybe they are getting out while the getting is good.

Hurd is my CongressCritter. We have exchanged a few emails the last of which I admonished him about his 'racist Trump' position on the totally non-racist Baltimore tweets. Despite the 'R' next to his name he responded like every democrat in this country. When I heard of his 'retirement', I told him I expected him to change political party not his job. But since he has been in the DC area for many years, I suspect the money for lobbying is far better than being a representative in a 51-49 Congressional District.
