Prayers for the continued recovery of our friends in neighboring Lake County. It seems over the last four years just about the whole place has burned. Yet the resilience of country people always come to the foreground and our small towns rebuild with hope and promise with a new House of God. Our cool summer this year (so far) has been a great blessing. May the fire danger remain low through to October. Lake County deserves a break. God bless you all.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Clearlake man arrested three years ago for setting the Clayton fire and numerous other fires around Lake County during a yearlong period has reached a plea agreement and will be sentenced this fall. The Lake County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that it has reached the agreement with Damin Anthony Pashilk, 43, after ongoing discussions and “the assessment of the risks associated with proceeding to trial.” The agreement calls for him to be sentenced to just over 15 years in state prison. He also will have to face a restitution process for the victims of the fires he set.

The Stanford professor who saw through Elizabeth Holmes' Theranos fraud has blasted the company's investors as 'old men whose brains went to their groin'. Phyllis Gardner, a professor of medicine at Stanford and a former partner in a health care venture capital firm, criticized Elizabeth Holmes' blood testing company long before fraud charges were brought against her. Holmes, who was named one of America's richest women in 2014 by Forbes, with Theranos valued at $9 billion, is currently facing up to 20 years in jail for lying about 'revolutionary' blood testing technology.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago White Sox employee of the month got to throw out a first pitch. And, to put it mildly, she was just a little bit off target. The rookie right-hander uncorked one of the most wayward first pitches ever when she plunked a team photographer standing close by, between the mound and first base line prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The ball went right off Darren Georgia’s lens, nowhere near the plate.

The last few days have been a clear example of why Sen. Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is wobbling. Let’s begin with the former district attorney’s visit to her home ground for the 75th anniversary celebration of the Sun Reporter, the town’s African American newspaper. Harris worked the pre-party crowd with charm, sharing jokes and memories with everyone she came across. But when she took the stage, we got a 30-minute lecture on the importance of the First Amendment. An inspiring subject, but she went on way too long and without any reference to where she was or who was in the room. She might as well have been in New Hampshire.

It’s a mystery that’s lasted for 50 years and lingers still: What happened on the summer night in 1969 when a car driven by Sen. Ted Kennedy plunged off the Dike Bridge into the waters off of Martha’s Vineyard, killing his 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne? On July 18, 1969, Kopechne, who had worked on Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s 1968 presidential bid, attended a reunion party with five of her fellow campaign workers, known as the “Boiler Room girls,” so named for their windowless office. The Jeffrey Epstein case is an asteroid poised to strike the elite world in which he moved. No one can yet say precisely how large it is. But as the number of women who’ve accused the financier (at least, that’s what he claimed to be) of sexual assault grows to grotesque levels—there are said to be more than 50 women who are potential victims—a wave of panic is rippling through Manhattan, DC, and Palm Beach, as Epstein’s former friends and associates rush to distance themselves, while gossiping about who might be ensnared. The mood of left-wing Democrats might be neatly summarized by the media coverage of last weekend’s Netroots Nation conference. The progressive left seems poised to consign former President Barack Obama to the dustbin of history. Moreover, supposedly woke agitators do not seem to care how their exercise might affect black voters who comprise a crucial part of their 2020 electoral strategy. According to Vox, “Progressive activists know their enemy in the 2020 Democratic primary: Joe Biden.” As Vox notes, “Some activists at Netroots conceded they would support Biden in a general election if they had no other choice.” Dean Obeidallah of CNN and The Daily Beast finds this concession
