Sorry, banning plastic bags

Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to reduce plastic pollution, which will include a ban on single-use plastics as early as 2021. This is laudable: plastics clog drains and cause floods, litter nature and kill animals and birds. Of course, plastic also makes our lives better in a myriad of ways. In just four decades, plastic packaging has become ubiquitous because it keeps everything from cereals to juice fresher and reduces transportation losses, while one-use plastics in the medical sector have made syringes, pill bottles and diagnostic equipment more safe. Going without disposable plastic entirely would leave us worse off, so we need

I like reading Lomborg and he has brought a great deal of awareness to the counter-arguments to the looney green lefties and their twisted, irrational environmental agenda but every now and then Lomborg reveals his Danish socialist solutions to environmental issues. Case in point: Charge a tax on plastic bags like Ireland rather than outright banning them. NO THANKS!!! Nothing, N.O.T.H.I.N.G. more eternal than a goobermint imposed tax which will never, ever, EVER go away - see your phone bill with taxes that are being charged liked the Federal Excise Tax from 1941 to help revenue losses from that time. So while Lomborg has, as always, good arguments against plastic bag bans, his solutions leave you scratching and shaking your head. Following Ireland's example is not a good nor workable solution.

We used to use the “single-use bags” 2 or 3 times, the last time as a trash bag. Now we use the thicker bags 2 or 3 times, the last time as a trash bag. Guess what which is worse for the environment AND makes more money for the government.

I am old enough to remember when the environmentalists forced us to give up our paper bags in favor of plastic (which I still hate). These people will never be happy. Electronic cigarettes are being attacked just like the real ones. They are not interested in solutions, they want power and to impoverish Americans.

"you must reuse an organic cotton shopping bag 20,000 times before it will have less climate damage than a plastic bag" "it will still take 191 years before the overall environmental effect of using the cotton bag is less than if we had just used plastic" "a paper bag requires 43 reuses to be better for the environment – far beyond the point at which the bag will be fit for the purpose" Thus the insanity of the "greens". Even if you buy into their Alarmism, their solutions simply won't work. When you are running around with your hair on fire the need to DO SOMETHING often leads to bad ideas. "a simple plastic bag, reused as a trash bag, has the smallest environmental impact of any of the choices" Which is what most of us do. They can also be used to put wet clothes in, isolate particularly dirty paper towels or rags, storage, etc., etc., etc.. "If we want to reduce the impact of plastic bags while still allowing for their efficient use, a tax seems like a much better idea." Oops, slipping into brain dead mode. If using plastic bags is the most environmentally friendly AND there is a PURPOSE and NEED for such bags, WHY do you need to reduce their use? "plastic bags make up less than 0.8 per cent of the mass of plastic currently afloat on the world’s oceans" So WHERE is the problem? "more than 70 per cent of all plastics floating on oceans today – about 190,000 tonnes – come from fisheries, with buoys and lines making up the majority" SO, the problem is with a specific industry. We at home can't directly fix that except through support of seeking a solution. Further, people at home in the US can make almost NO significant contribution to solving the problem since WE aren't directly contributing to it.

The tax is actually not such a bad idea. It is an avoidable tax because customers can bring their own bags. Cities that have hoped for big revenue increases from this kind of tax have been disappointed because consumers would rather walk out of store with goods in hand rather than pay the tax. I have seen it first hand.

Idiots. Where do they think paper straws come from? We went to plastic because paper bags involved cutting down trees. Why do I want to hurt the company making plastic bags? Cloth bags are full of germs.

More than 200 men in black suits sit in a conference hall in a Baltimore hotel. On folding tables in front of them hundreds of pieces of paper are scattered and pitchers of water are placed at regular intervals. Two tables raised in the front are lined with people apparently in charge, each with a microphone. Everyone has a name tag, hung around his neck on a green lanyard. At a glance, you might think it’s a regional gathering of some professional association of paper salesmen, hotel managers, maybe even low-caliber lawyers. Only a careful look at their collars will show that these men are the apostolic shepherds,

Politics is about power, how to get it and how to keep it. Politics is about mobilizing votes. It should come as no surprise that candidates can say one thing on one day and another on another day because they will say whatever needs to be said to appeal to the electorate. Joe Biden instantaneously flip flops on abortion. Barack Obama and Bill Clinton were as much against illegal immigration as is Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton was once against gay marriage. In totalitarian societies, the truth is what the dictator says at any given moment. In democratic societies, the truth is what the mass public wants to hear at any given moment.

Now, an Ohio jury has identified an entirely new variety — Woke Privilege — and resolved to hold accountable people who believe they are protected by it. The jury handed down a staggering $11 million verdict against Oberlin for a smear campaign against a local business and awarded another $33 million in punitive damages to the targeted mom-and-pop store, Gibson’s Food Market and Bakery.

In a concurring opinion in a Supreme Court case announced Monday, Justice Clarence Thomas issued a lengthy call for his colleagues to overturn "demonstrably erroneous decisions" even if they have been upheld for decades -- prompting legal observers to say Thomas was laying the groundwork to overturn the seminal 1973 case Roe v. Wade, which established a constitutional right to abortion. Thomas' blunt opinion came in Gamble v. United States, a case concerning the so-called "double-jeopardy" doctrine, which generally prohibits an individual from being charged twice for the same crime. But both pro-life and pro-choice advocates quickly noted the implications of his reasoning for a slew of other future cases,

The Justice Department has rejected New York County District Attorney Cy Vance Jr.'s attempt to have former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort transferred to the notorious Rikers Island prison complex ahead of his pending state court trial, amid questions as to why the move was even contemplated in the first place, Fox News is told. Fox News first reported earlier this month that a New York State judge ordered the transfer at Vance's request. However, because Manafort has been convicted on federal charges, any attempt to move him out of federal custody must be approved by Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen. On Monday, Rosen denied the attempt, effectively

The Trump administration is doing just about everything it can to slow the flood of undocumented Mexicans and Central Americans coming to the U.S. and claiming asylum. But alleviating our growing border crisis is impossible unless Congress changes our immigration laws. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was right when he said Tuesday during a congressional hearing on border security that there is “absolutely no justification whatsoever for Congress to sit on the sidelines and watch as this crisis continues to unfold.” The emergency on the border is “getting worse and worse as Congress sits on its hands and does absolutely nothing” to help. The border pandemonium is literally fatal. Since December,

Last Wednesday the intelligence community launched its first attack on Attorney General William Barr’s investigation into its illegal acts and abuses of power during the 2016 election. In a New York Times article entitled “Justice Department Seeks to Question CIA in its Own Russia Investigation,” the IC makes clear its fear of the results of Barr’s investigation of their spy operation on candidate Trump in 2016 that continued through his early presidency. The article, obviously written at the behest of its intelligence community sources — “current and former American officials” — is the first of many concerted attacks on Attorney General William Barr’s investigation of the joint CIA/FBI spy operation.

When Donald Trump told George Stephanopoulos he (Donald) might listen to "oppo" research coming from a foreign source and that he might not tell the FBI about it, the mainstream media, as is so often the case, deliberately missed or misstated what he meant, went into one of their usual hissy fits, and attacked the president, even calling him treasonous. Besides the obvious hypocrisy, pointed out with characteristic aplomb by Andrew McCarthy, something else, likely more important, was at play. The media (and the Democrats, of course) deliberately missed the point because you would have to be seriously intellectually challenged not to get why Trump might have been hesitant or ambivalent

“What’s your pitch to the swing voter on the fence?” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked President Trump on Sunday. Questions of this sort are gifts to politicians, but interviewers ask them for a couple of reasons. One, they’re civic-minded. Politicians deserve the opportunity to make their cases straightforwardly — and voters deserve to hear them. Second, they save time. (Snip) Trump’s initial answer started off following the standard script. He got four words off that must have had his political advisors cheering, “Safety, security, great economy.” Ideally, this is where Trump should have stopped talking.
