The Europe of Nations vs. the Europe of Brussels

John Fonte is probably the leading American critic of what he calls “the Europe of Brussels.” Thus, his is a voice worth listening to in connection with the European parliamentary elections now being held. John discusses what’s at stake in these elections in an article for “American Greatness” called “The Virtues of Patriotism.” The election, says John, represents a “war of ideas between the ‘Europe of Nations’ and the ‘Europe of Brussels’ — between national democratic sovereignty and supranational authority.” John is making a critical distinction.

Democrats, the party of abortion 0 replies

Democrats are not primarily driven to defend workers, equality, the environment, the poor, the elderly, or any of the other things they often claim they’re fighting for. They are, above all else, defenders of abortion on demand. The Democratic Party is, bluntly, an arm of the abortion lobby. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which oversees party efforts to win House elections, last week announced that it was canceling a fundraiser for Rep. Dan Lipinski of Illinois. Lipinski once again faces a primary challenge based on the single issue of abortion. He is the last anti-abortion congressman in the party. The abortion lobby fell just short in a primary challenge

The Democrats, stumbling down the road to impeachment, were stunned by President Trump’s executive order on Thursday. The order is in two parts. First, it directs the intelligence agencies to cooperate with Attorney General William Barr’s investigation into the origins of the Trump-Russia counterintelligence investigation that was the vehicle used to spy on candidate Trump’s campaign and President Trump’s administration when it was new. The second part of the order delegates to Barr the president’s authority to declassify — or reduce the level of classification of — anything that the intelligence agencies will give him.

In Australia a week ago, the party of the left lost an election it was supposed to win, to a conservative government headed by an evangelical Christian who won working-class votes by opposing liberal climate policies. In India last week, the Hindu-nationalist prime minister, Narendra Modi, won an overwhelming electoral victory. And as of this writing, Europeans are electing a Parliament that promises to have more populist representation than before. The global fade of liberalism, in other words, appears to be continuing. Right-wing populism struggles to govern effectively, but it clearly has a durable political appeal — which, as Tyler Cowen points out

If you were hoping that the recent wave of global right-wing populism might be declining, it has not been a very good couple of weeks. In India, the Hindu nationalist, Narendra Modi, was just reelected handily — with a hefty majority in the Parliament, despite expectations that he’d do far worse. Buoyed by resurgent nationalism and his standing up to China and Pakistan, as well as appealing to the left-behinds, he achieved something historic: the first full second term for a prime minister in nearly 50 years. But it’s impossible to understand Modi’s success without seeing his exploitation of Hindu anti-Muslim religious bigotry at the heart of it.

Naomi Wolf went on Matthew Sweet’s BBC show Sounds to promote her new book Outrages: Sex, Censorship and the Criminalisation of Love, but she wasn’t expecting the entire premise of the book to be taken apart, and she for sure wasn’t expecting it to have it happen in a few short minutes. The book is about the poet John Addington Symonds, and the increased prosecution of homosexuality in the 19th century and onward, resulting in contemporary pervasive homophobic views. But it kind of doesn’t matter if she’s right or wrong, because she misread the research rather dramatically. Wolf’s claim is that backlash against homosexuality in the late 1800’s was about curtailing behaviour

On Friday, Theresa May, perhaps the worst Conservative prime minister in recent history, announced her resignation outside of number 10 Downing Street. She will step down effective June 7. “I have done my best,” she insisted. “I have done everything I can. . . . I believe it was right to persevere even when the odds against success seemed high.” She went on: For many years, the great humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved the lives of hundreds of children by arranging their evacuation from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia through Kindertransport, was my constituent in Maidenhead. We ate lunch at a Chick-fil-A today. When we entered the restaurant, the first thing we saw was an empty table that was set up to honor fallen military personnel over the Memorial Day weekend. Every Memorial Day, hundreds of thousands of motorcycles rumble through Washington, D.C., to honor veterans and prisoners of war. They call themselves Rolling Thunder, and this Sunday will be their 32nd ride. It will also be their last. “We thought about it and thought about it. It’s a shame that we’re stopping it. I’m sad in a way, but in another way I’m glad,” said Sgt. Artie Muller, who served in the 4th U.S. Infantry Division in Vietnam. Muller co-founded Rolling Thunder Inc., the nonprofit that organizes the ride, in 1987, and currently serves as its executive director. Rolling Thunder attracts a patriotic, leather-loving crowd to Washington.

HERSHEY, Pa. — Chuck Duncan is not the kind of guy who sits on the sidelines. Duncan, who serves in the National Guard and was deployed to Jordan last year, was outraged when his local board of supervisors decided to raise property taxes to pay for a $32 million community center here. “I saw that as irresponsible, so I decided to run. It was as simple as that,” Duncan said. On Tuesday night, he battled it out in a three-way primary for Derry Township supervisor — and won. Duncan is one of several local candidates in Pennsylvania being funded by the new Kennedy Democrats PAC,

Federal district judges aren't emperors for the whole United States. Congress and the Supreme Court should both remind them of that reality. By issuing putatively national injunctions, Attorney General William Barr said in a May 21 speech to the American Law Institute: “One judge can, in effect, cancel the policy with the stroke of the pen. No official in the United States government [rightly] can exercise that kind of nationwide power, with the sole exception of the president. And the Constitution subjects him to nationwide election, among other constitutional checks, as a prerequisite to wielding that power.” The subject arises because, on issue after issue, liberal district judges

Today’s lesson in political double standards: bankruptcies. When Donald Trump is involved in any brushes with bankruptcy, it just proves what a con man he is, a deadbeat and a scam artist, using his white privilege and toxic masculinity to rip off victims of the evil capitalist system. But now that it turns out the fake Indian, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, may have made millions as a lawyer in assorted corporate, Trump-like bankruptcies, somehow it’s become a wonderful, positive experience. “Bankruptcy law is about coming up with the fairest outcome possible in a difficult system,” the fake Indian’s campaign gushed Wednesday, “and trying to help individuals and businesses get a fresh start.”

The grim tally was only expected to increase as a shooting Sunday about 6 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Throop Street in Englewood is said to have left two dead and two injured. The shooting was possibly in retaliation for an earlier one in the same neighborhood on West Hastings Street, which also left a man dead, investigators said.
