The Canadian province of British Columbia (BC) has ended its experiment with legalizing hard drugs, and the consensus among both public officials and citizens is that the program was a complete failure.
“This pilot was designed as a time-limited trial with ongoing monitoring built in so we could understand what was working, what wasn’t and where changes were needed. Democrat Christian Menefee, a former attorney for Houston’s Harris County, has won a special congressional election in a left-leaning congressional district in Texas, which has been vacant for nearly a year.
The Associated Press reports that Menefee defeated former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, a fellow Democrat, in Saturday’s runoff election to fill the seat left vacant when Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died last March.
Menefee’s victory means the Republicans’ razor-thin House majority — they currently control the chamber 218-213 — will shrink by one seat when Menefee is sworn in to Congress.
The federal government is set to end Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for Haitians on Feb. 3.
This means some Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio, will no longer be able to work or live legally in the United States. City officials estimate that about 12,000-15,000 Haitian people live in Springfield.
A U.S. District Court judge is currently reviewing whether to suspend the expiration of TPS for Haitians.
