A U.S. military strike in northwest Syria resulted in the death of a leader affiliated with Al-Qaeda who was linked to an ISIS attack last month that resulted in the death of two U.S. Army soldiers and a U.S. civilian interpreter, the U.S. Central Command announced Saturday.
U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, conducted the strike on Jan. 16, killing Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, authorities said. Al-Jasim was allegedly directly connected with the ISIS gunman who killed Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard and the interpreter and injured three other U.S. service members in Palmyra, Syria, on Dec. 13.

Yesterday I wrote about Gov. Tim Walz sudden change of tone. After weeks of verbally escalating the conflict with ICE and the Trump administration, even saying on several occasions that the state was at war with the federal government, Walz suddenly pleaded for calm. At the time, it wasn't clear to me what had motivated his sudden change of heart.
This afternoon, we're learning that both Walz and Frey are under investigation and subpoenas have been or are about to be issued to both men by the Department of Justice.

U.S. District Judge Kate Menendez’s ruling addresses a case filed in December on behalf of six Minnesota activists. The six are among the thousands who have been observing the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol officers enforcing the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area since last month.
Federal agents and demonstrators have repeatedly clashed since the crackdown began.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday it is issuing a series of warnings to airlines to exercise caution when flying over Central America and parts of South America, citing the risks of potential military activities and GPS interference.
The FAA said it had issued Notices to Airmen covering Mexico and other Central American countries, as well as Ecuador, Colombia and portions of airspace within the eastern Pacific Ocean. The warnings began Friday and will last 60 days, the agency added. As you've probably noticed, Gov. Gavin Newsom hired a new social media team a few months ago and their general approach is to attack people on the right by saying whatever pops into their heads. Frequently that meant profanity or mocking public officials like a teenager might. There's a new development in the yearslong international mystery over Havana Syndrome: The U.S. has obtained and has been testing a device that officials believe could be linked to the debilitating condition.
Sources said the device was quietly obtained by the Department of Homeland Security in late 2024, almost a decade after symptoms of what became known as Havana Syndrome were first reported by U.S. embassy personnel in Cuba. The Pentagon has since been testing the portable, backpack-sized device, which emits pulsed, radio-frequency energy and contains components of Russian origin.
The sources said Homeland Security investigators believe it may be capable of reproducing the effects described by victims of Havana Syndrome.

The repeal ends formal cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) vowed that if elected to be the next governor of California, he would take away driver’s licenses from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
While speaking at an event by the Empowerment Congress, Swalwell was asked about his plan to “protect” people in the state from ICE agents, according to Mediaite.
Swalwell explained that he would “direct law enforcement” officials to use “every power to prosecute” ICE officials for “battery, false imprisonment, and murder,” according to the outlet.
“They’re gonna lose their immunity,” Swalwell said. “They’re not going to be able to drive, I will take your driver’s license. Good luck walking to work, a**holes.”

Bacon announced his retirement from Congress last July, and he’s eying impeachment as his final act.

Thirty-five percent believe the shooting was justified, while 12% have no opinion. But the poll results vary widely when the respondents’ political affiliations are examined. The Trump administration decided to terminate TPS for several countries, with Somalia as the most recent. That choice is the right step in a long-overdue course correction for an immigration program that previous administrations exploited far past its statutory purpose.
