Congress created Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to briefly assist those in need. Shakespeare warned, “Ingratitude is monstrous; and for the multitude to be ingrateful, were to make a monster of the multitude.” In the case of TPS, “multitude” is correct. As of January 2025, approximately 1.4 million foreign nationals in the United States were shielded from removal under the program. The Trump administration decided to terminate TPS for several countries, with Somalia as the most recent. That choice is the right step in a long-overdue course correction for an immigration program that previous administrations exploited far past its statutory purpose. “The far-right has coined a new derogatory term for white women, which has gained traction following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, in Minneapolis earlier this month,” reports The Independent. The objectionable term is the acronym AWFUL, which stands for Affluent White Female Urban Liberal. Another variant is AWFL. The New York Times was the first paper to report on this new “offensive” term.

Anti-ICE protest disrupted a Sunday church service in Minneapolis after a group of activists entered a congregation and forced worship to stop, according to footage shared online.
The incident occurred at Cities Church, a Southern Baptist Convention congregation, where protesters stormed into the sanctuary chanting anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement slogans. The group alleged that one of the church’s lead pastors was affiliated with ICE, a claim the protesters repeated while interrupting the service.
Video from inside the church shows congregants visibly shaken with the service ultimately being shut down. It is unclear how the protesters obtained the information that led them to target the church.
Trump administration officials this week touted efforts to lower car prices through regulatory rollbacks and the deemphasizing of electric vehicles during a Midwest auto industry tour. A 28-year-old Florida woman has been arrested on charges of impersonating the father of a teenage camp counselor killed in last year’s deadly Texas flood to fraudulently collect online donations.
Maitlin White of Crestview was taken into custody on January 9 by a U.S. Marshals task force in Okaloosa County on two felony counts of online impersonation, according to Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen. She faces extradition to Texas, where she was charged on January 2.
White was previously convicted in Walton County, Florida, on charges of battery, theft, and drug possession, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
