In the latest setback for those seeking an increase in the federal minimum wage, Amazon announced that it will be opening its first full-size and fully operational grocery store, complete with “cashierless checkout technology” in Washington state. This “Amazon Fresh” store will utilize what the Big Tech giant has dubbed, “Just Walk Out” technology, which means that you do not have to stop at a checkout register to pay for your items. Upon entry to the store, customers scan a QR code with their Amazon account details, while the store infrastructure tracks what is selected from the shelves. The customer can then leave, and Amazon will bill their account automatically.

And those rioters are already experienced
in that "just walking out", they can just skip the part where are they leave their payment details.
A store designed just for them.

There is a new market-style Meijer near me that offers only groceries, featuring organic foods and boutique/artisanal products along with a pared down selection of the usual grocery fare (Meijer is a Michigan retail chain similar to Walmart). It is entirely self-checkout.

Somewhere around $15 to $19 an hour, robots will replace us. Always on time, never calls out sick, no vacation, unemployment and very accurate. Next they'll be cooking our burgers and upsizing us in Drive Thru.

Had a great conversation with one of my adult sons about this. We both agreed that when any store goes cashierless, we stop shopping there altogether. We both will only use lines with cashiers for two reasons. (1) If everyone is willing to self-checkout, there's no reason for the store to hire someone to work a cash register; increases unemployment numbers. (2) No one is offering a 5% discount to customers who check themselves out. Might as well have customers stock the shelves as well.
We've been in Walmart twice in the past several days where only one line was manned across the 15 or so lines. When that one goes.....so do we.

Noble sentiment #4. I use self-checkout whenever I can. Why? I value time, and standing in one to be treated to some glum checkout clerk who can't count change is a waste of mine. Walmart intentionally has only one or two of their 30 manned checkout stations operating at any time, and I'm not in any mood to stand in their lines...which is their intention. Fine with me.
And isn't self-serv checkout kinda like being a hero in these pandemic times? I'm saving someone's grandmother form COVIDS by using a machine rather than exposing a human with a mask behind plexiglas to possible contagion.

Oh, yeah, people WILL 'just walk out'. And not pay.

And of course we can trust Amazon to bill you not only accurately but also without regard to your race, political party, sex, or other characteristics? I'm afraid this is going to end up being about more than just operational efficiency and minimum wage clerks.

I just talked to a checker in my W TX big local grocery. She said in their situation, everyone was told checkouts with no checkers are coming. However, nobody will lose jobs and in fact, are getting raises. The store realizes these people need to be on the floor helping customers. Also the growing online order and pickup needs employees.

I bet the The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) knew their jobs could NEVER be shipped overseas. But eliminated? Say what? And how long before someone sells a Faraday cage shopping bag?

Well #4, the big Walmart in Branson is doing check-free about 80% now. My girlfriend went and talked to employees on purpose. She was told its not true people lost their jobs & they get tired of hearing it. They are desperate to hire people. Remember, nobody exactly knocking down doors wanting to work. She said NOBODY that had been checkers lost jobs. Many are needed to assist in the new system. She said many got raises.

In another year or so, Bezos and the government will just decide what everyone needs, and have it automatically sent to them, and their government run 'money' account automatically charged.

I understand Walmart is supposed to go checkerless this month. I always wait in line for a checker and will go to another store when that happens. Also sick of not being able to get to products on the shelves for the people filling orders. How would you like a job filling grocery orders all day every day? So thankful I am retired and had nice jobs before I retired.

On the bright side, robot installers and robot mechanics will be making big bucks....
At least until robotic robot installers and robotic robot mechanics replace them.

The self-check-out at the local big chain in central PA is cashless. (gotta use a credit/debit card)
I prefer to pay cash so I have to deal with (mostly nice) cashiers.
I have disabled hands so I force them to put the coins in my hands before they place the bills above. Otherwise, the coins slide off the bills and I can't hold everything. Then I block the customer line while I slowly put everything away.

I do not like WalMart but my insurance company gives us a food card to be used there. The later in the evening, the less cashiers. One night it took 45 minutes, an assistant and two managers to self check out because I had a coupon. Customer no service was closed, so I had to return the next day because they made a price mistake and wouldn't/couldn't correct it.
If you want a cashier to check you out, contact them on the web site.
