As poster #9 remarked Cesar Chavez was no friend of illegal aliens, or at the time, the temporary foreign agricultural workers, called “Braceros” who were allowed to enter the USA for annual growing seasons after which they returned to Mexico. That “Bracero” program, was actually a treaty between Mexico and the USA and was in force from the First World War days up until the mid 1960’s and was heavily depended on by Western Growers in the USA. So each year after receiving a “Bracero” visa and ID card Mexican agricultural workers (Braceros) came into the USA at the start of the growing season, were usually employed by farm labor contractors, did agricultural work through the seasonal harvest, and then returned to Mexico to work their own small farms and be home for the Christmas holidays. During the Mid 1960’s Cesar Chavez organized a farm workers union known as the United Farm Workers that consisted of US citizen and legal immigrant farm workers who had the right to live permanently in the USA. Cesar Chavez did not want to compete with the “Braceros” and any illegal alien agricultural workers who he knew had been and would continue to depress the wages paid to farm workers across the board, including the members of his United Farm Workers Union that controlled a lot of votes in California and surrounding States. Cesar Chavez then colluded with President Lyndon Johnson, a liberal Democrat, to terminate the “Bracero” program and to prohibit “Bracero” farm workers from legally entering the USA at the start of the next growing season. President Johnson did that. What happened next was essentially the start of mass uncontrolled illegal immigration across the border from Mexico. Since the Western Growers wanted their “Bracero” workers back, the farm labor contractors in big numbers essentially got in cahoots with the Mexican smugglers and became smugglers themselves by bringing their old had been “Bracero” workers into the USA unlawfully, by smuggling the now illegal alien farm workers into the USA in big numbers, continuing to employ them, as they did agricultural work around the Western part of the USA. That smuggling process continued to grow, with the illegal aliens not returning to Mexico as they did in past years, and taking up employment in all sorts of US industries. That’s why the USA has such a massive illegal immigration situation that has continued to grow up to today. These days illegal immigration is very political with the leftist and progressive Democrats, believing that most illegal aliens who are poor and uneducated, are future natural Democrat voters by the tens of millions, and must be legalized to gain all those votes, and transform the USA into future country run by one political party, of course the leftist and progressive Democrats. As for the wimpy Republicans, their interest in illegal immigration in the past had been based upon the fact that illegal aliens represent cheap foreign labor for their business supporters, and as such in the past have gone along with the Democrats to sabotage effective immigration law enforcement measures and protocols while talking their conservative game up in their home States.
