The indomitable Betsy McCaughey has called out the latest ugly manifestation of "diversity, inclusion, and equity" the drive to destroy the suburbs. The Biden administration and Democrat-controlled legislatures in several states have taken the lead in this effort. In New York State, Governor Kathy Hochul, as part of the state budget, has advanced a so-called Housing Compact that would eliminate local control and single family zoning.
Hochul's plan would require that high-rise "affordable" (read: low-income, taxpayer-subsidized) housing be constructed close to each sleepy village train station — mostly a few miles apart — on Metro North and the Long Island Railroad. If the affected communities fail to
Well, this brilliant plan should ensure that NY has ONLY low income people who require state subsidies.....the only real problem is that they will have no one who actually PAYS taxes, since those people will have left the state for places where the legislators do not prioritize those who contribute nothing.

Public housing should be constructed next to the homes of these two women as a test case. If all goes well, which it won't, they will shut up and leave the world alone.

I will venture a guess that a huge majority of suburban women who will eventually be objects of the zoning changes voted democrat last election. The reason was to protect the sacrament of abortion for their precious daughters. Vote one issue, but get the full plate of leftist rules.

My only problem with this article is that the author assumes that members of the legislature still have reason to fear being voted out. I am not sure how much longer that will be possible.

Hochul's plan would require that high-rise "affordable" (read: low-income, taxpayer-subsidized) housing. Forgot the words democratic voter. Lots of single moms with more than one baby daddy who looks to the government to be their Big Guy. Pres. Trump warned this was coming. Take the progressive voter out of the city and spread him around. Besides we are easier to control if we are congregated into one large cheap a$$ government housing complex.

There is low income housing near me. One of the buildings has 3 floors and an elevator.
I don't have an elevator and have to walk up steps.
That's ok. I don't want to get government permission to live someplace.

Also, as in every other democratic state, low income govt subsidized housing brings crime. And, on top of that they will overwhelm the school systems which will cause higher taxes to provide for building more schools. As usual the democratic elites in these states will have their kids in private schools while they transform your schools into was zones. See Chicago, NYC, Baltimore, Memphis, St. Louis, New Orleans and every other democratic run city. Kids in those cities can barely read, write or do math. Wake up already. Got it.

There's a reason the Hochul looks better in this photo than in most others: in it she was appearing before the New York State Funeral Directors Association...and they did their best.

Let’s let the facts speak for themselves. We all know what they are. Public housing is a blight on any neighborhood and democrats hate that there are suburbs where Americans can live in peace with people of all color who desire the same thing, clean communities, low crime. and good schools. This is not about racism. It is all about shared values. These people have worked hard to create their lives and Democrats don’t like that. They want us to suffer in any way they can manage to make it happen. This is not normal thinking. It is evil to want to destroy good things. The vast majority of Americans understand that you must work for what you have and when you do you want to protect it. We know what happens to a neighborhood when someone comes in and just lets their place go. It is a blight on the neighborhood and it effects everyone.
In my small town there are rumblings about bringing in more apartment complexes. The town is already becoming very congested. The schools are popping at the seams and this little sleepy town is being transformed not by long time residents but by wealthy people who recently moved in and have built several high priced picturesque neighborhoods. They are all for these new changes. I don’t get it. They create something of beauty and then destroy it. They destroy the very thing that drew them here. It is the democrat way. Be diligent because they will come for Communities like mine because they promote strong families, excellent education without their leftist nonsense, and actually live out the American dream. Don’t allow them to infiltrate your community. You have to fight to preserve your way of life.

All the bums in San Francisco and NYC should be given a room in those big mansions. Problem solved. It worked in the Dr Zhivago movie in another time when the children demanded a share of other people's work.

Does anyone think this will be for low income Americans?
I hear the NYC luxury hotels are overflowing with illegals.

The overall plan is to empty the cities and make it available to builders who want the cities for their own business adventures....it happened to Chicago with section 8 housing built in the suburbs...it has been a disaster as most families have deserted the public schools nearby...because of the crime and sold their homes that they build 40 years ago thinking it would be forever....section 8 has killed many communities...but...and here's the shining light....their tax base is gone and the rat's housing has become a ghetto!

New Yorkers elected a proven autocrat. All leftwing Dem politicians are at the core of their being, dictators. All dictators soon show themselves to be totalitarians.
This plan came out of the Obambam's leftist fetid brain, as #17 notes. The suburbs are where historically the "middle class" took root, so to speak and prospered, building vibrant communities.
And as Marx noted, and all the future commies agreed, the middle class stands in the way of the communist revolution. The reasons are obvious. And the consequences of this attitude are around us, too. In commie-lands you have an elite class of very wealthy, shall we say, obscenely rich, elites, who buy properties not easily accessible to the crowds, and at the other end of the spectrum, the motley rabble, the grimy proles (which is really how the ruling elites see those beneath them).
They only dole out goodies to keep the proles under foot and ready to vote if need be.
#11 is right, also. We are seeing it begin up here in NH, where developers are granted millions to build this housing.
As with every other command-and-control operation, there is no foresight. Again, they do not care what the costs and impacts are to standard of living for the locals. For example, how are services impacted? Been to an emergency room lately? Have you tried to find a PCP lately? How about your Medicaid budget? So, expect taxes to increase here, too How about schools? can they accommodate newcomers (which include illegals who need interpreters)? How much will the influx impact local taxes, because you'll have to enlarge your schools, hire more teachers. How about safety concerns? fire, police? Are there jobs these people are READY to fill?
But this happens when the voters who actually care don't actually vote or campaign or support in the way the activist Lefties always, always do.
I knew someone who lived in an upper-income suburb outside of Boston. The town got wind that "affordable housing" was being planned. The neighborhood hastily threw together an environment impact committee and were able to "prove" that a marshland would be irrevocably harmed by any such housing. All these rich lefties or check-pant Republicans don't want their neat little towns spoiled by the rabble.
Commies are activists, even if they don't really know what the he&& they are actually accomplishing. They never stop scheming and planning and plotting... and voting and/or stealing elections.
And when the ignorant, unawares, naive, fools vote for the Hochuls and Bidens of the world, they are in effect doing what Lenin (attributed to him) famously said, "we'll sell them the rope with which we will hang them."
