Old hybrid vehicles can come with massive bills when their batteries die, as an Arizona man recently found out.
Lucas Turner was driving his 2014 Infiniti hybrid when its check engine light made its annoying appearance on the scene, according to KPHO-TV.
Not good, but with fewer than 70,000 miles on the vehicle, he was not expecting the bill would be a whopper.

The $20k repair bill represents about 200,000 miles of driving plus all the additional CO2 for producing a new battery. He should have gotten a Yugo so he could drive with pride and not have his pony tail all in a twist.

“I can’t make this make sense in my mind.”
Instead of being woke, perhaps you should have listened to us Neanderthals who pointed out that hybrids and EVs are disasters in the making.

As one of the greatest philosophers in our lifetime often said, Stupid is as Stupid does. And imagine all the money this guy saved on gas. Not to mention for an additional $20.7 K he helped save the planet.

His second mistake was taking it to a dealer for service.
He could find a less expensive battery from another source.

Fortunately, the hybrid should be able to be operated with just the gas engine. Not as good mileage, but probably at least 70%.

The replacement cost of a battery in a hybrid car is what stopped me from buying one 8 years ago. I wonder what it will cost to replace all those batteries in electric cars. Will it be the same or more than a hybrid replacement?

Yeah, but look at all the moral superiority he certainly felt for all those years. That has to be worth something. I'll wave as I drive my gas burner on by.

Sleepy Joe's trying to cut out 60% of coal-fired power plants. Soon, Mr. EV and all of his dumb friends won't have the juice to recharge their EVs. What then, smarty?

For a really good time, check out the "Smug Alert!" episode of South Park (Season 10, episode 2). Kyle's dad feels so morally superior with his new Prius that he moves the family to San Francisco. Smog is soon replaced by a superstorm of "smug" that destroys both cities. Funny, funny stuff.

Anyone who, in normal conversation, says "I'm like" instead of "I said" or "I thought" isn't very smart to begin with. Like this guy, who bought a used hybrid.

It sucks to be stupid but unfortunately some people don't learn that until later in life. He should scrap the green car and buy a Honda Civic, which will guarantee him 200K files with maintenance money made up exclusively of tires, oil and filters.

Stay FAR away from any vehicle with a battery other than the starting battery. And even they are getting ridiculously expensive since the EPA shut down the LAST lead mine in the USA.

Re #5, typically there are no other, competing sources for these batteries, each being a totally unique creation for the vehicle model.
And they are VERY dangerous to work on. In most dealerships one or two technicians are trained in the safe ways of dealing with these deadly batteries, and no other techs are permitted to literally touch the car until it is 'made safe' by the special technician. Why? Touching the wrong wire or terminal can electrocute you. Bam, dead, not fixable. These batteries are typically around 400 volts, far higher than household electrical power, and being able to put out HUGE amounts of power for a short period are just deadly.

He paid $16K for a used car and probably thought it was a great price compared to buying a new one for $50K. At same the seller probably was glad to get rid of it before the battery went out, the deal was a win win.
Now that the full price of $34K hits the buyer doesn't think it was such a great deal but the seller is still happy.

#17 - And that's 400 volts of DC, correct?

Re #19, yes, Direct Current. Your car starting battery has 12 volts DC, and is harmless to touch.
