Shoppers must show their receipts before leaving one branch of a national grocery chain - as staff clamp down on soaring theft rates.
Harris Teeter, with 258 stores across eight states, has also banned the use of several different bag types including big backpacks, suitcases and large duffels.
The changes, for now, only apply to its D.C. location after the state became a retail crime hotspot in recent years.
The news was welcomed by local residents who complained crime in the are has been worsening.

How is this different from Costco or Sam's?

I have to do that at Sam's Club and resent the hell out of it. I've spent my whole life trying to maintain the honor of my name, and I've been largely successful. To be treated like a criminal suspect does not sit well with me.

Walmart has been doing this for some time. At least they kinda do it. In our small-town WM, if the old guy at the door (probably younger than me) recognizes you as a regular, he just nods you through.

Showed mine at Sam's this last week. I don't resent it in the slightest. Preventing shoplifting keeps MY prices lower.

Any resentment or feelings of being offended about this is more telling of the customers than the store, & reinforces the need for in the first place. As others have said, other stores have been doing it for years.

I was in southern Colorado, and went to the local Walmart to buy a few things. Not only did the clerk check my receipt, but checked it against the contents of my cart. I'm guessing the store had a shoplifting problem.

#4, I didn’t see your comment until after I posted. But, this practice is not against the honorable. It’s to protect against the dishonorable. It benefits those of us who have spent our lives trying to live worthy of an honorable reputation.

Good for Harris Teeter!
In places where the shoplifting is even more in-your-face, I would think that the only way a store could stay in business would be for customers to pre-order and pre-pay using their 'phone, then pick up their items at a service window or curbside delivery.

And Costco has one of the lowest "shrink" (shoplifting losses) in the industry. Maybe it works?

I was struck by this phrase, "has also banned the use of several different bag types including big backpacks, suitcases and large duffels." I can understand the backpacks, but have never seen anyone enter a supermarket with a suitcase or a large duffel bag. I'm here in California. Is this an eastern thing?

Gee, what is it about DC that is different from most of the rest of the country? What could possibly be the reason?

I remember a story from years ago about an overweight woman who came into a store wearing a long overcoat.
When they checked her on the way out, they discovered that she had big pockets sewn along the length of the lining.
She had filled the pockets with all sorts of meats, etc., steak, roast, ham, whatever.
I was amazed at the time. Very little surprises me anymore.

Harassing the innocent only serves to punish those who committed no crime. If you think I stole from you then call the police. If you dont think I stole, leave me alone. This is the same sheep mentality that lets cops search because you have nothing to hide.

Check out the population of DC... there is no wonder it is the crime ridden capital of the world! These parasitic scum elected a convicted crack addicted criminal to be Mayor and not just once by accident.

I read that some Walmarts are getting rid of their self service checkout, as they are losing tons of money to shoplifting. Scan one item, bag two items.
