A wild new “animal cruelty” ballot proposal would put hunters and fishermen on the hook.
Controversial legislation that would outlaw killing or “injuring” any animal — even while shooting or catching your dinner — is one step closer to landing on the ballot in Oregon, officials said Wednesday.
The measure, Initiative Petition 28, has garnered 120,000 signatures, more than the roughly 117,000 it needs to go to vote in November, The Oregonian reported.
Along with banning hunting and fishing, the legislation would also prohibit slaughtering livestock and using animals in rodeos and for scientific research.
It would also prohibit operating a commercial poultry business and castrating or neutering livestock, among other practices.
House Republicans are aiming to move forward a bipartisan housing bill by cutting a requirement that build-to-rent institutional investors sell off their properties within seven years. A new version of the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, completed Wednesday night, strips that requirement, which the Senate passed in its own version of the bill. A generator fuel line set up for temporary lights for a May 17 event was was cut, causing it to seep into underground cisterns that collect rainwater under the Washington, DC, landmark, Freedom 250 spokeswoman Rachel Reisner told NBC News.
“Following the Freedom 250 team’s installation of temporary lighting on the National Mall, our equipment has been repeatedly targeted by vandals. The recent fuel leak was the direct result of that tampering,” she said.
