Police in South Africa shot and airlifted a crocodile suspected of consuming a 59-year-old businessman who was swept into floodwaters, authorities said. When the reptile was sliced open on the ground, human remains believed to be those of Gabriel Batista were recovered, along with his ring and six other pairs of shoes that may belong to additional victims. Batista reportedly attempted to drive across a flooded bridge on Monday to reach his hotel and bar when his vehicle was swept away. He was carried down the river where crocodiles were present. It remains unclear whether he drowned before being eaten, as reported by Collin Rugg on X.

Ya'll be careful out there, especially in Africa. When we did our hunting safari in South Africa, we stayed away from the bigger rivers. When we drove through Kruger National Park, we were warned to stay away from the rivers both for crocs and for the deadly hippos. The Disney ridiculous dancing hippos are in no way even remotely related to hippo actual behavior. We handled a hippo skull and the large teeth have a very hard thin outer shell, and a softer interior, and the uppers and lowers rub against each other making a very, very sharp edge on that hard thin layer. and they are about 1.5 to 2" in diameter. Hippos kill more people than any other animal in Africa, but crocs are right in there, too. Everything in Africa is bigger, meaner, nastier and harder to kill than in North America....thank goodness. When we went on a nature hike in Kruger, two park rangers with loaded elephant rifles escorted us. We saw hippos and elephants feeding 100-200 yards away, and lion tracks on the trail we were on. Like I said....ya'll be careful out there.

There are several great books about Africa written by Peter Hathaway Capstick. Capstick was a former white hunter in game control there. Really good reads. In one, he describes a big croc that waited for the village women to come to the river to wash clothes and would regularly pick one off for a meal. Capstick staked out a goat and waited in a tree until the croc came for the goat and killed it. 10 feet long or so and when cut open revealed numerous bracelets that the poor women had been wearing. I highly recommend the books. A good look at African dangers.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has moaned he was punched in the face by a fellow Rikers Island inmate and is “constantly threatened and derided” by other prisoners. Weinstein, who uses a wheelchair to compensate for his lack of mobility, insisted safety concerns at the notorious New York City lockup have kept him confined to his cell for 23 hours a day because when he is out of confinement bad things happen.

CENTCOM said three U.S. F-15E Strike Eagles were engaging Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones at around 7 p.m. local time when they were hit by friendly fire. All six aircrew ejected safely, the command said in a statement Monday. “Kuwait has acknowledged this incident, and we are grateful for the efforts of the Kuwaiti defense forces and their support in this ongoing operation,” the statement read.

She completed the third and final jump in her skate, landing cleanly without a fall. But for those with an understanding of the sport’s requirements, Glenn’s mistake was devastating. South Carolina GOP Rep. Nancy Mace claimed Monday that Congress’ sexual harassment slush fund allegedly paid for settlements for a handful of former lawmakers that equaled more than $300,000. Mace promised accountability for the victims, and the House paid out approximately $338,000 to settle the cases. One former lawmaker was targeted in sexual assault lawsuits three times and the House cumulatively paid out $115,000 to dismiss those cases. The House Oversight panel subpoenaed information detailing the government payouts after a March committee vote, seeking a full accounting of payouts made before the settlements ended in 2018, according to Politico.

In its recent Callais decision, the Supreme Court held that districts gerrymandered solely so that blacks can have a separate and special say in politics are unconstitutional. While past elections cannot be changed, future elections must be corrected. Callais asked that the Court immediately certify the decision, which is normally a 32-day process. Louisiana agreed. Because November’s elections are quickly approaching, the Supreme Court held that, yes, it could immediately certify the opinion. Callais is final. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued a strong dissent to this procedural holding. She opened by pointing out that Louisiana

The Supreme Court ruled Monday its prior ruling on race-based congressional districts takes immediate effect. The order {SEE HERE} speeds up the normal 32-day timeline and puts the State of Louisiana on notice their current districts are not constitutional. Effectively the Louisiana Governor and legislature have delayed the election to address the districts. However, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was not happy with the immediacy ruling and wrote a dissent that was so ridiculous none of the other minority justices would sign on to it. Jackson said the majority “unshackles itself” from “constraints.” The court should follow the default rule, she insisted.

The suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has killed three people and sickened at least seven others, has two likely causes — and both are bad news for the 150 passengers on board, experts said. The more likely scenario would be passengers contracting the virus from the feces, urine or saliva of infected rats or mice. That’s the usual transmission vector, according to physician Zaid Fadul, a former Air Force flight surgeon — although the World Health Organization insisted Tuesday that no rodents have been found on the stranded liner. But there’s one strain of the hantavirus that has an alarming exception —
