Dashboard camera video captured a United Airlines flight striking a Baltimore bakery truck on the New Jersey Turnpike on Sunday afternoon as the airplane was preparing to land at Newark Liberty International Airport.
Chuck Paterakis, senior vice president of transportation and logistics and co-principal at Baltimore-based H&S Bakery, told CBS News Baltimore that the driver was traveling to a Schmidt bakery depot in Newark and was about to exit the highway when the truck was hit.

Pretty useless video. The camera just falls on the floor, shows really nothing of the hit.

The pilot is on the hook for this. Probably should have been 100 feet in the air at that point. And they have a radar altimeter which is giving them their height to the foot once they are below about 1000 ft, so unless that was out, should have known.
And, there is typically (but not always) a precision approach system called an Instrument Landing System which gives vertical path guidance. He should have been using that....but, it was a sunny day and he/she decided to hand fly it. Wouldn't want to get too rusty letting the automation do all the landings, right? Oops, too late....too rusty.
Probably not a career ender, but he/she will be getting some remedial training in the simulator, no doubt.
Could have been a lot worse, nobody really hurt, no significant damage to the plane. United will be buying a new bakery truck.

Lucky guy. Doubly so: Pop was a boxing Hall of Famer. What a great dad to have growing up. For those times when the argument turned to, "Yeah? Well, my dad can beat your dad."

This particular approach requires a very low approach o'er the road. What happened was a sudden downdraft/change in wind which should have triggered a preventive maneuver. In 1985 this happened in Dallas resulting in decapitation of a driver and a plane crash killing some 140 people. The safety changes put in place afterwards should have prevented this current event. At least no one died this time.

What is it with United Air Lines. Seems like almost every commercial airplane incident involves them. Anybody else notice this?

The dashcam video is "not much" because the airliner's tire comig tghrough the windshield knocked the camera rto the floor of rhe truck.
A bit close for comfort, I'd say.

"Sudden downdraft" That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Heck, there might even be a bit of truth in it, but the weather out the front view of the dash cam doesn't look like "sudden downdraft" weather to this pilot. Could it have happened that way? Maybe, maybe not.

I'm a student pilot, and have flown one instrument approach, in my life, so far. It was a clear and nearly calm day, and I nailed the Glide Slope as well as the Localizer and had a great landing.
The rest of my landings, if I'm lucky, I have either a VASI (two lights) or PAPI (four lights) to keep me on the glide path. Also, if you have the descent rate and ground speed correct, you are on the glide path if the aiming point is stationary in your windscreen.
I flew in a lot of clear air turbulence (CAT) yesterday and today. I would have the airspeed and descent nailed and the next thing I would see is the airspeed drop 8-10 knots. That doesn't help keep you on the glide path. I was flying a light piston powered airplane. When I added throttle, I had power Right Now.
Turbines take time to spool up, so airliners have to push the throttle forward on final so they'll have enough power to fly soon enough if they have to go around. If they run into windshear on final (headwind turns into a tailwind), there might not be enough time for the engines to spool up before the plane is significantly below the glide path. That might be what happened here.
Note: Carrier pilots also shove the throttle forward just before touchdown in case they don't catch an arresting wire, so they'll have enough power to go-around. The hook on the plane is attached to the throttle so it is retarded when they hook the wire.
