A Reconstruction-Era Republican once described the dull-minded and buffoonish Democratic President Andrew Johnson as “always worse than you expect.” Nowadays, we may apply that same simple assessment to public education, particularly in Democrat-run cities. In a post Sunday on the social media platform X, school-choice advocate and research fellow Corey A. DeAngelis of the Heritage Foundation shared a chart with data on Chicago Public Schools that seemed so ludicrous as to defy belief. The chart, courtesy of the Illinois-focused nonprofit research company Wirepoints, listed “Chicago Public Schools’ 20 most-empty schools.” Incredibly, Douglass High School, with a student capacity of 912, had only 28 students enrolled.

As a former parochial school teacher and principal, this really disgusts me. Our teachers dedicated their lives to teaching children; not to getting rich. Our teachers' salaries were about half of what their public school counterparts were earning, and our students' test scores always excelled those of the public school by far. Our teachers did not belong to a union. Our teachers did not picket or lobby for more benefits and pay. Our teachers felt that it was a privilege and a calling from God to teach His little ones.

I remember one meeting we were all required to attend before the beginning of school. Most of these meeting are just throw away get togethers that look good on paper. Some uppity over qualified and over paid professional would give us a BS lecture on something stupid. Well this one was really stupid. It was about not hurting the students' feelings by using a red pen or pencil to make corrections. It was just too shocking. They did not want us to circle an incorrectly spelled word and write SP by it. Or Break up a run on sentence with a period in red. I mean it was the dumbest thing I had ever heard. Have to protect those delicate feelings. Two trends that have ruined our students is the "self esteem" craze. And the disregard for phonics. And let's throw in cursive writing. Luckily many school systems are making adjustments. There is so much more I could point out. I remember our assistant principal said teaching multiplication tables wasn't necessary as everyone will have a phone that can do it for them. Lots of stupid everywhere and a lot of it is in our school systems.

This is going on all over the country. Huge sums supposedly spent for each student, when most of that money goes to administrators. While most students graduate HS with about as much knowledge as a fifth grader from sixty years ago. The educational system in the country is another version of the swamp in like in D.C.

You could say the same is happening through most of the U.S. Here in Pennsylvania where I live, parents are taking their children out of the public school system. They are homeschooling or sending them to private schools. The current public schools in my county are losing so many children each year. One of our school districts in my county has an 8th grade math proficiency score of 17%. Yes, only 17% can do basic math. Very sad but true.

It looks like the Chicago school system is trying to rival the “LEARING centers” in Minneapolis. I wonder how much of the money they burn through comes from the federal government.

The past is coming back to haunt Democrats as a video of then-House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) resurfaces while the left continues to hammer President Donald Trump for carrying out a joint strike with Israel on Iran, claiming he doesn't have the authority to do so without getting permission from Congress. This is what happens when you don’t practice the principle of consistency. Then again, does the left practice any principles at all? After then-President Barack Obama launched a strike on Libya in 2011 and took serious heat for it, Pelosi defended his actions and said he did not, in fact, need authorization from Congress before launching the attack.

The threat of Iran or its terrorist proxies retaliating inside the United States is driving new pressure on Democrats to reopen the Department of Homeland Security after President Donald Trump’s overnight strikes. House Homeland Security Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) joined other Republicans on Saturday in urging Democrats to end a two-week shutdown at DHS, an agency tasked with safeguarding America against terrorist attacks. He cited the “heightened threat landscape” after the U.S. launched strikes on Iran and past attempts by Iran to target dissidents and President Donald Trump on American soil.

President Trump's decision to launch a war against Iran without congressional signoff has splintered lawmakers, largely along party lines, and supercharged the debate over war powers authority. While most Republicans largely rallied around Trump’s decision to carry out the massive joint attack with Israel, Democrats quickly denounced the attack as an illegal “war of choice” and demanded Congress come back to Washington to take a vote on whether to authorize another Middle East invasion. Democratic leaders have vowed to forge ahead with their plans to force a vote on a war powers resolution next week in the House that would block Trump from carrying out additional strikes.

In fact, this confrontation is the direct result of the Obama administration’s disastrous decision a decade ago to appease, enrich, and embolden Tehran. The federal income tax is abusive. It is inconsistent with liberty. It has, as Chief Justice John Marshall noted, the power to destroy. There is nothing positive to be said about it. It cannot even raise government revenues efficiently. As we said a year ago, of all the good Donald Trump could do in his second term, eliminating the federal income tax would be one of his greatest achievements. It’s clearly one of his goals. “As time goes by, I believe the tariffs paid for by foreign countries will, like in the past, substantially replace the modern-day system of income tax,” Trump said during his State of the Union address.

When you’ve constructed a cartoon version of the world in your mind, what do you do when reality proves it wrong? If you’re the leftist establishment, you certainly don’t rethink your assumptions. Late Friday, New York Times columnist David French snarkily referred to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth as a “walking MAGA caricature” on X. Four hours later, Hegseth’s troops were pounding Iran in an intricate series of strikes that left its evil regime reeling. The response to French — who has not withdrawn his sneer — was unsympathetic. My favorite: “Let’s have a contest … you and Pete show up at Fort Bragg, see who the troops respect more.”
