The pajama party is over.
Tampa International Airport set the internet ablaze on Thursday after its official X account declared war on what it called a full-blown fashion emergency unfolding at the gate.
“We’ve seen enough. We’ve had enough. It’s time to ban pajamas at Tampa International Airport,” its post read.
After bragging about previously “banning Crocs,” the airport said they were moving on to address an “even larger crisis: Pajamas. At. The. Airport. In the middle of the day.”
“The madness stops today,” the X post read.” The movement starts now. Help Tampa International Airport become the world’s first Crocs-free AND pajama-free airport. Do your part. Say no to pajamas at TPA.”

PJs are probably their uniform of the week and they are too lazy to change. Show some class or drive.

There was a time when there was at least an implicit dress code to fly on a commercial flight. Men wore coats and ties and women wore modest outfits. Passengers and crew behaved accordingly. If you dress the part, you behave the part.

When I was a child, we often flew to visit relatives in Sunday School clothes. How far we have fallen. Still…at least pajamas only look slovenly. Better than skanky.

There is an overarching issue that few cite and that is what happens should you need to get out of the airplane in a hurry....especially into an environment that may have the sharp remnants of impact damage, pertroleum/oil/lubricants, and potential proximity to fire. The fleecy polymer PJs and plastic Crocks will provide little protection and, worst case, melt into your skin. If you're a frequent air traveler and remain unconvinced, ask a nurse who's worked a burn ward what the short and long-term prospects of that exposure are like. To be honest, the short-shorts, flip-flops, and tank-tops are equally as inapproprate from an aviation safety point of view. They're best saved for when you're on the back of some young tuff's motorcycle./s
Shared by a long time avaition safety expert and accident investigator who failed miserably to convince his own daughters of the above. But for me, it's clothing of natural fibers as much as possible and leather shoes when I travel and, yes, I do always count the number of rows between me and the nearest exit so that I can crawl over all the victims and their carry-on as I count the rows in a smoke-filled cabin to the exit.

Laziness prevails, I guess. Why does it have to be PJs though? A pair of sweats topped with a nice sweater provides the same type of comfort that PJs do and they don't require additional effort to put on.
Hopefully this trend will end. I remember back in the 60s before malls women would go downtown shopping with their hair in rollers. I never understood that one either. Earlier in the 50s women would dress for shopping. My mother always made sure she had a pair of clean white gloves on hand for her trip to town.

As a former educator, I found that children, dressed up for class trips, were better behaved. I am sure that could also apply to adults.

I always used to dress well when traveling. I was amused at how many times I received upgrades to first class. If you don’t think your manners and appearance matter when traveling, you’re wrong.

It appears that significant number of young people literally live full time in PJs. Infantile behavior will continue until they are required to dress like adults.

This year I have had multiple surgeries and a huge weight loss. When I have had to go to the doctor's office, the only clothes I had that wouldn't fall off my body were pajama pants. I was so embarassed to be seen wearing them but it was what I had. I didn't want to replace clothes until I was sure the weight loss had stopped.
I agree with OP, pajamas should be at home or Walmart.

Good advice, but it's hard to take from a self designated 'fashionista' that obviously doesn't know what a hair brush or comb is! Nice clothes with hair resembling a rats nest is not a look to favor.

Pajamas? I don't wear a dress shirt and tie but a nice shirt and slacks look OK. I remember my uncle giving my brother and I a treat. Our first airplane ride to a college football game. A DC-3 just to show how long ago that was. We wore our little suits and ties. Some people are just slobs today.

Poster #9, buy a couple of pairs of sweat pants. They have elastic waists and are not expensive.
I rarely travel but in 2009 I was in Long Beach visiting my daughter and then flying to Utah to visit my son and couldn't believe at the airport the adults who were wearing pajamas. People should have a bit of self respect.

No wonder nobody wants to get married anymore, if this is considered ok. Put a little effort into your appearance. Good grief.

There does not seem to be a dress code for anything any longer. The only time people might dress up a little is at a wedding. Many people don't own what we used to call "dress clothes." I hope other airports see not to pjs at airports.

What about Kevlar? How about pointy white hoods? Furry outfits? Loincloth? Is there a very detailed list of what is and isn't allowed by the masterminds?

I don't know how I feel about this. Its crass and demonstrates the complete lack of self respect or respect for others. On the other hand, it makes identifying the morons much simpler.
My default position is that if no one is harmed, who am I to stand in they way of someone making a fool out of themselves. It could be worse. They could be wearing skin tight spandex to advertise every lump, bump, curve and roll.

To me, wearing pajamas in public- whether to the airport, to class, or shopping, crosses the line from Casual to Slovenliness.

They can wear what they like, but having to wear PJs for hours on end if your flight is delayed could be a bummer. Want to leave the airport to kill a few delay hours? Good luck with that.

These are not toddlers in PJs but adults giving the F-U to other travelers. PJs don't belong anywhere other than your own home and Walmart.
