The Trump administration is preparing to crack down on student loan defaulters starting next year. This will be interesting because you can bet Democrats are going to flip out about this. The Education Department confirmed it will begin withholding wages from borrowers who fail to pay their debts. The first wave hits in early January. About 1,000 individuals who defaulted on their student loans will see wage garnishments begin the week of Jan. 7, 2026.
“We expect the first notices to be sent to approximately 1,000 defaulted borrowers the week of January 7,” an Education Department spokesperson told The New York Post.

In my lifetime I have had to take out loans multiple times. I paid them back each time. Its a simple equation, you agree to the proposition, you carry out your promise.

You want money for something and dont have it on hand. Someone gives you the money, and in return you pay it back on an agreed upon schedule plus extra. Thats only fair, since you used their money for your venture. Why is this so hard for so many to fathom? You make a deal, and you stick to the deal. This shouldn't even be a story.

"Biden also attempted to unilaterally forgive billions in student debt in a blatant attempt to bribe voters to vote Democrat."
This is the primary reason that so many students stopped paying. Why make loan payments when generous Old Joe was going to forgive you for borrowing a few hundred thousand to learn about basket weaving techniques in Kenya and the sex habits of ten-year-olds in Angola. The career potential was zero but the parties were great. The universities did not give your money's worth in education but that's a separate problem.

The Democrats are outraged that the Trump administration is simply enforcing immigration law and student loans.

I paid back all my student loan, no problem. I venture that most of these defaulters graduated with liberal arts degrees.

While I do believe that one's debt should be repaid, Federal student loan guarantees were met by immoral increases in the costs of college education forcing ever higher debt. Even worse, college education other than in STEM subjects became more and more worthless in terms of training for careers that could actually earn enough to pay back those loans. Rather than wage garnishment perhaps there should be penalties imposed upon colleges themselves for having done this to mostly hapless students.

While I believe tuition, across the board, is way too high, people have signed on the dotted line and need to take responsibility. An overhaul is certainly needed and maybe a better way to pay the dues, but until then pay your debts.

I can see a new strategy, don’t work so you don’t have to pay. We need to withhold 15% of any government benefit.

I was listening to an older sister telling her much younger sister to not spend a cent of loan money on anything but tuition and books because the money needs to be paid back. The older sister graduated with almost no debt. The younger sister bought a $1400 iPhone then quit college.

From what I have read in the past, there are many Fed govt employees who are in arrears on their loans. Their pay checks should be easy enough to garnishee for, say, $300-$500 per month.

Oh, I can already hear the wails of despair - the weeping, and gnashing of teeth! “How can these monsters demand that I repay my debts?”

Good news. I have been suggesting this for years.
Pay back what you owe. It's just that simple. And if people aren't paying, it is proper to garnish their wages. People are living high on the hog, and not paying on their student loans. Not right.

Wage garnishment was always part of the initial application. 3 questions asked before you lend money to someone. 1 Can they pay? 2 Will they pay? 3 Can you make them pay? Wage garnishment is the affirmative to #3. These people aren't going to get any sympathy from most of us. We pay our debts.

Sorry about your "women's studies, or ethnic studies" degrees not being worth the paper they're printed on or the fact you took your student loan money and partued in Cancun, but you signed a contract that is now due.

It is deplorable how many elitist college students think that the rest of us should have to pay off their student loans. #Deadbeats

If this gets to court, the Judge needs to ask this: Did you borrow money from this organization, Yes or NO?
Uh, Yes. Judge, THEN PAY UP, NO OPTIONS, if you do not, your funds will be seized!
