President Donald Trump announced a new fleet of ships Monday, known as the "Golden Fleet," as he revealed he approved plans for two new "very large battleships." "As you know, we're desperately in need of ships. Our ships are some of them have gotten old and tired and obsolete," Trump said, flanked by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan.
Trump said the new ships would be "100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built," in an address from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Renderings behind the president showed the new "Trump class," including one named the USS Defiant.

I can appreciate how some people really don't like this guy while even some who do are growing tired of him. The intent is good, but if one of the goals is to ramp up the pace of shipbuilding then this won't do it. Acquiring and building a class of new ships with all that technology means a decade or more before the first one will put to sea - if the program isn't first canceled due to cost overruns. We couldn't even get the little Littoral Combat Ship right, and the FFG-62 program is a disaster. Instead, we should be building even more DDG-51's like the Raphael Peralta (DDG 115), pictured.

"Trump Class"? US Navy ship classes are traditionally named after the first ship in the class to have a keel laid. This should be the Defiant Class. Trump can put his name on buildings but leave USN tradition alone.

I was really concerned about his announcement. They touted this great earth shaking live TV speech, and it turned out to be like a Glenn Beck thing. All hype and no story. That announcement could have been made in normal course since it is not time critical.
It also seemed he had no idea what he was going to say. Most of the time it seemed he was reading off a paper he had never seen before. I hate to say it, but it sounded more like a Biden speech. He's done better.

I like to hear a few admirals weigh in on whether or not battleships are obsolete in today's world.

Why is everyone p!ssed and critical of Trump?
What, he hasn't done enough turning the ship of state around despite gale force headwinds from the democrats and self-righteous RINOs?
Be a mensch, say thank you.

WARSHIP blast it all.
A Battleship (BB) is a Class of Warship as is a Destroyer (DD) or a Carrier (CV).

Battleships became obsolete in WWII. Even more so now in the age of drones.

You can call any class of future warships as being “Battleships”, but they does not mean that they have any legitimate connection to the now obsolete Second World War Battleships.

Nothing says FAFO like a battleship. I'll bet Trump was looking for a way to bring back the Iowas class battleships, but was told they'd be too expensive to maintain, not to mention, finding people to run the guns.

Building more USN surface combatant ships is a good thing, but this is likely inaccurate terminology for what these ships will actually be. Yes, build a bunch of competent, modern surface fighting ships.
We just cancelled a whole class of ships after years of work because of incoherent design and extreme cost increase. Look at the cancellation of the "Constellation class"......intended to be a high production run of a new frigate. Let's hope that this job gets done right this time.
Pet peeve time:
A "battleship" is the name of a particular class of ship, no longer in existence anywhere. We had the last of the breed, and they fought their last battle, against their own kind in 1944 in the Battle of Surigao Strait, part of the much larger, multi-day, multi-engagement Battle of Leyte Gulf. They lobbed 16 inch shells in the Gulf War, and launched some cruise missiles, too, but didn't actually have any other battleships afloat to go up against. They were scrapped decades ago, or made into museum ships. Worth a visit!
The misuse of this technical naval ship term to name any surface ship which might "go into battle" is a bit tiresome. These ships would probably be properly called missile cruisers or destroyers, even frigates, depending on their length and displacement.

Military ships already in existence have tracking technology and weapons that can shoot multiple aircraft out of the sky, including drones. Very few people know what DARPA has developed for the new ones. Use your imaginations not your history books.

#3, I remember President Trump saying we were going to win so much that people would get tired of winning.
I appreciate how much he has done for America..... and after four years of the HairSniffer's minions tearing out the roots and fibers of America, there is a LOT to do!
I'm with #9. These are Warships. A Battleship is a big, big-GUN ship, we have a few kept as museum ships, the Texas and Alabama not too far from me, then the Iowa, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Missouri.
